Ollessendro said:People seem to have quickly forgot that Beattie was an over weight, lazy and overpaid striker than contributed bugger all. An individual and not a team player. He made one consolation sprint back to his own line (cup game against Villa) to put in a token tackle,
Ollessendro said:...made a few visits to Sheffield hospital, signed a few autographs and scored a few pens and suddenly he is the best striker since Deane. Fat BT is not fit to lace Fjortoft's boots, made Nathan Blake look like DidierDrogba and Rob Hulse like a young Torres.
Can't see us wasting a wage on an unfit player so assuming he is fit your answer is yes??
Time for a Swiss Tony moment:
BT in this division is like buying a vintage champagne on the first date with a bird from Carlisle.
You know that you've a fair chance of getting in her knickers, but do you push the boat out and go for the good stuff, knowing full well that you'll get a 100% guaranteed shag just because its expense.
Or do you take her to Yates' get a cheap bottle of Spumante and hope that she'll put out just because she's pissed.
The stats say that he is the best striker we've had since Deane. He scored more goals than Fjortoft, Blake and Hulse. He scored more than Fjortoft an Hulse combined!
Who cares what the grunters think. Beattie will score plenty in league 1no wonder the wednesdayites are laughing their bollocks off at us.
So basically what you are saying Pat, is that Beattie has not scored in a competitive game for a couple of years and his current spell is 18 games without a goal. This is a striker well into his 30's who has barely played the last few years because of injuries and fitness.
Yep, snap him up. The saviour is here.
He was good with free kicks and penalties otherwise a lazy slob who contributed nothing as a team player, if he had any concience he would sign a 2 year deal on zero wages.......... one of a long list of overpaid under achievers that have helped to get us where we are now, and to think when he signed for us a future England player went the other way no wonder the wednesdayites are laughing their bollocks off at us.
So you would agree with me that if he regains full fitness he will score goals?
Your argument against signing him seems to be centered around his injury record.
This is understandable, its a valid concern. But 33 is not too old to rediscover fitness and form.
So he's not scored in 18 (injury ridden) games, so what? - strikers are creatures of confidence/form.
Torres has been fully fit and has scored 3 in 23 for Chelsea - does that make him a bad player?
Finally someone talking sense. All the mediocrity lovers are hoping for yet another failed come back. There's is even talk of fans wanting Nade and Stokes back. They would score bucket loads in this league. It's a real laugh or cry situation.
No my issue with BT is that he is a lazy, overrated, individual that offers little to the team other than a goal every now and then. He's good at free kicks and pens, but offered bugger all else. Look what happened when he left. We started playing better. He came in on huge money and achieved bugger all. Best striker since Deane?! Laughable. Bent mark 1, Hulse, Fjortoft, Shipperley and Deane mark II were better. Andy Gray, Jostein Flo and Gareth Taylor were at a similar level.
Beattie is a never been that pillaged 40k a week out of a United team that achieved bugger all. After he left we played better and almost got promoted. But we love average-ness and we love an ex 'hero', so let the obsession continue.

How could you even begin to justify Rob Hulse or Andy Gray being better than James Beattie? Mind boggling.

olle does make a valuable point though in that we seem to be obsessed with former players.. maybe because most of them seem to go onto better things.. last year it was micheal brown.. plus i've seen numerous posts about tonge and even jagielka 'coming back on loan'.. (which was frankly laughable)..we need to move forwards not backwards.. we currently have a squad of youngsters with potential (lowton, macguire, long) and journeymen pro's on their last paypacket (collins, doyle, cresswell, simmonsen) .. we need to break this mold
Totally bewildered by that view Olle. Beattie is a proven goal scorer.
!
So when did Beattie last score a goal?
According to Olle two years ago. I dont follow it that closely so I'll take his word.
That spell accounts for 18 games so we can assume he's struggled with injury.
Should we write him off for an 18 game spell?
So when did Beattie last score a goal?
Has had injury problems up in the SPL which is why we didn't sign him but have asked him to prove his fitness. He is only any good to us fit no matter what we are paying him. If he is, then he is better than what we have by a million miles. Isn't that the way we should be looking at this?
The worrying thing is how much better he is than the rest of what we have.
People forget he only scored 2 goals (1 a pen against us !) in the season before we signed him, albeit in the Prem. To me, it's all about fitness and cost, if he's fit enough and we're not paying him a fortune then it's a no brainer.
Quite. All the crap about how everyone else loves mediocrety, and he hates the one genuine class player we've signed since we were relegated.
Plus how anyone can say Hulse is better than Beattie after their respective 2007-8 seasons is beyond me. What was it, no goals in 20 or 21 games for Hulse?
Olle, you were much more interesting when you posted what you actually saw, rather than tried to play a part for the sake of it. Like I said in the other thread, I see arguments for not signing Beattie, but this stuff does you no credit at all.
How could you even begin to justify Rob Hulse or Andy Gray being better than James Beattie? Mind boggling.
Not a single fact but a host of shouted fiction that suits the claims of the poster. Opinions are like arsoles though, everyone has one. Best striker since Deane in that his all round quality and ability to drag a flapping and flailing team somewhere near the brink of promotion. That he was part of Blackwells team that got within 3 points of automatic promotion (with him and his goals we would have gone straight up in my opinion). A tallisman for the team and someone who the other players (ask them) of the time like Billy Sharp etc had massive respect for. For all that people say about his billy big bollocks attitude, it was (from the mouths of those who played with him) never apparent. His pay packet from what I understand is vastly overinflated by those who use it as a stick to beat him with. He was as I understand it on about half of what is stated as basic with the rest payable as a big fat bonus should we get promoted. We didn't so he didn't get his bonus. Smart business by all concerned as I see it.
He was one of the few shining lights in what has been otherwise a catalogue of shite. Scored goals frequently (for those who are hard of thinking, this is what wins games by the way, not huff and puff) and in his 18 months with us was pretty faultless in his efforts and his conversion rate of chances to shots on target.
I sometimes think we deliberately shun quality players from SUFC for our preference of triers like Bob Booker etc etc. We prefer effort over quality. We would be better driving around in a beat up old Austin Allegro than a fancy Ferarri. None of that luxury and quality for us, oh no. We want down and dirty.
For someone who shouts the virtues of football over Hoof, you are contrary Ollie. But perhaps this is old you surfacing for a look in the mirror again?

His career speaks for itself. 124 league goals, 90 of them in the top flight!
Also 5 caps for England. If he's overrated he's fooled a lot of people for a long time.
If as you say he offers nothing apart from the odd goal, then I'll take that (goals win games).
If Beattie is mediocrity then give me mediocrity all day long!
Quite. Lets face it his ability was more than sufficient in the Cghampionship, even accounting for age and match rustiness, if he is fit, he will cause huge problems for the Centre halves of most teams in this league (our own included!).
If them concentrating on him, frees space up for others, we may see goals start coming from other area as well...
