Disappointing!

Early last season the lack of pace going forward looked like a problem. Then we found alternatives, like passing teams to death. Will that work in the championship, let's hope so. That or Brooks and Chef exceed expectations.

Honestly. You'd think that with AI and everything that the internet wouldnt mid correct Ched

AI probably knew exactly what it was doing and just miss-spelt his name purposefully. I work in Manchester, and whenever I talk about us/Ched, my co-workers dare not say his name out loud. It's like he's the second/third/fourth coming of Lord Voldermoort. He who shall not be named.

Which requires pace!

England won the world cup with a side that wasn't exactly renowned for it's pace.

Banks, Wilson, Moore, Charlton J, Cohen, Peters, Stiles, Charlton R, Ball, Hunt, Hurst.

Not a lot of pace there, but we still won.

Thanks Dad!

Stanley was one of the fastest players over the first ten yards after he had wrong fitted a defender. Aftet that, his footballing brain was quick as lightning and he knew exactly where the other Stanley Mortenson was and when the pass was on

An old Bolton mate was really
Pissedoff when his team lost to Blackpool, in the cup final. He maintains still that. That game should be remembered as 'The Stan. Mortenson' final on account of the goals scored.

Of course it is. The obligatory "Hate to say it.." before praising the Pigs; on the forum for almost a year before making a (negative) contribution.

It's a filthy, oinking, grunting Pig!
Haha

C'mon lads FFS it's a bit early for post-mortem before we've kicked fkg a ball in this division ,until we've played a few it's more than a bit early to call that one , out of curiosity what blistering pace did Newcastle have in winning the league ?

Newcastle.. poacher in Gayle ..partnered by Perez or Mitrovic , Ritchie wide midfield and set piece specialist not front 2 again not fast

Brighton . Murray , Baldock or Hemed up top all more physical than fast .. only player with pace they had was Knockaerthart who was exceptional but again from wide midfield and set piece specialist

Add Adie Littlejohn , Andy Campbell & Michael O'Halloran to the pacy devastating strikers list

Exactly why it's ignorant and foolish to proclaim we are doomed without more pace as was the opening post.

Granted, it would be great if we had 15 footballers who can all run really fast, as well as kick it well, head it well, read the game well, understand the game well, have good vision, good work ethic, right attitude...actual physical attributes are getting more important yes, but they are nothing without everything else. The most important being attitude.
Wrong attitude and the whole lot goes down the pan.

We have a team of footballers who are good. They might not be in the bracket of lightening fast when it comes to running, but fuck me they are hardly slow either. All of them are certainly quick enough for the new la Liga....it will be their quality in other areas that is the difference between success and failure.

I absolutely agree with your opening sentence. For me, we are far from doomed and have a very good chance of being competitive at this level. We have a good blend of attributes throughout the squad but probably, the attribute where we are lightest is pace. It’s not the be all and end all but it’s a useful weapon to have and can hurt teams. Of course, any player with pace has to have some ability and a decent attitude to go with it (much in the same way that we want our flair players to press, our ball-winners to be able to play etc.). Nobody wants O’Halloran or Cofie. But I’m sure we’d all love a Steve Kabba, Peter Ndlovu, or maybe even Adrian Littlejohnn type of option to mix things up a bit. Deane and Agana were no slouches in the pace department either which was part of what made them such an effective partnership.

We may yet bring someone in. It's probably the hardest to find, a forward with pace and technique who doesn't cost £10m, so in the short term we may have to go for a loan. We just don't have the money to go out and buy everyone we need to challenge for promotion in one close season, we have to build the team and unfortunately, that can take time.

Agreed. As fans, we all look at our team and think about what could be done to improve it but the reality is that it’s an ongoing process and takes time. We can’t have every weakness in a squad fixed in one window. Though Wilder came pretty close last summer!

I think it was more of an issue during that spell where Sharp was partnering Hanson. We controlled games and were very hard to beat but sometimes lacked that bit of mobility up top to open teams up as much. Duffy’s game certainly seemed to suffer during that period as we didn’t stretch the play and open up that space for him. When Done/ Lavery played we looked a bit more dynamic but they also had significant weaknesses in their game. It’s difficult but if we could find that forward who had the pace to stretch teams whilst still having a good enough all round game and goal threat to justify a regular starting berth, we could be a really good side. I hope Ched can hit the heights again but it’s not looking too promising on the fitness front.

And Villa with all their pace are going to score loads of goals......?

I suspect they will. Kodjia is likely to be the best striker in the division this season IMO. Then they have the likes of Hogan and Adomah who are also quick and carry a goal threat. Although probably the fastest player in the division (and one I think could do very well this year) is Traore at Boro. Watched him against Arsenal and Chelsea for them last season and he looked a real menace and caused them all sorts of problems.

Dwight Gayle is faster than any of our forwards. Matt Ritchie is no slouch either. Atsu and Yeddlin also have a lot of pace.

Brighton also had Jamie Murphy who is no slouch.

I havent said once we are doomed. Far from it!!

Yes....it would add a different option.
But I don't believe the boss will just sign someone because they are quick. They have to have the ability to back it up. And sadly, you either have to spend serious money (which for this season we don't have), or you do the leg work and trawl the leagues to find one that has been hiding and undiscovered.
The latter of course takes a lot of time and relies on luck too.
Until one or the other happens....we will play a way that works. A good season this season, then kick on with some proportionate investment and we evolve in the pace department.

It's a methodical and calculating process that takes time. I'm fine with that.

I agree we lack pace and hope this will be rectified before the end of August.

We're going to have to catch teams on the counter-attack this season, and I think currently we don't really have the players to do so effectively.

We'll have to give them the ball first so they can attack us, they won't be able to get it otherwise.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I feel compelled to write into Daily Football Pessimist's problem page with regard to my local football club .
The main deficiencies that clearly exasperate me relate to the following :

During our last campaign , we clearly struggled with any type of retention & ability to find space often resulting to a long hopeful punt down the middle , never once did I see the ball played from the back with defenders wanting the ball in order to create a man over in midfield . Ha that gets me onto the midfield , a total lack of creativity & width just 4 kickers with no football brain to quote Mr B.Clough they couldn't trap a bag of sand .The full backs were so narrow they should have had a No5 on their shirt and would get a nose bleed if they crossed the half way line . Then there was the front 2 ...never moved off the penalty spot I've seen more movement in Nelsons Column , no idea how to find space or more importantly find the back of the net only capable of tap ins and the lack of pace all too evident , and the bloody football .. just terrible to watch .. we stumbled over the line promotion a clear mis-carriage of justice . If there's any justice in this world this team of cloggers will get there come-up-ance .

Yours Faithfully

Mrs N.Eva Satisfied

Everyone stating I'm wrong about pace, now everyone is saying we need more after yesterday.

Have a read through the forum you sausage

I have seen who have made the claims for more pace,it is the usual suspects.

We won yesterday,i am more than happy enough to trust CW to know what the team needs, rather than you or other negative nellies
