Disappointing!

Is this actually true or is it just one of those things people say?
Yes, it's true. Last season I watched the FA Vase, the FA Trophy, about fifteen Conference games, L1, Championship and PL and the higher the level, the quicker the game. The players are quicker in both pace and thought and their technique allows them to do things much quicker than lower league players who often have to take more than one touch.

Danger...you are a brave man...dont you know we've had a great window...if you don't buy into that you get ripped to shreds on here

The pace of play is different to the pace of a player. I'm assuming the OP meant the pace of a player (i.e. how quickly a person runs) as they talked about signing players with pace.

I've seen players in Sunday league who were lightning quick.
Relatively quick. They look lightning because they're playing against players who'd look slow as fuck in professional football. If they're genuinely fast then they're probably bob at actually controlling a ball.

I'd say a few standout pacey players in the division are:-

Kodjia (Villa)
Adomah (Villa)
Traore (Boro)
Hernandez (Hull)
Sessegnon (Fulham)
Aluko (Fulham)
Ariyibi (Forest)
Sakho (Leeds)
Hogan (Villa)
Henry (Brentford)
Costa (Wolves)
Little (Bolton)
Harris (Cardiff)

I used to think you were really knowledgable but you've been rumbled. Ha

Aah Stan Matthews. He'd be getting ready to accelerate for five yards past the left back, drop his right shoulder and the right back would fall over, do a shimmy and the centre half and goalkeeper would collide.......

Thanks Dad!

So it's not about pace? It's about having proven Championship goalscorers?

not just me then!?

And thats just attacking players! Got some speedy defenders in the championship. Blackmans probably our fastest player and thats because his legs are twice the size of everyone else.

This pace thing is a load of bollocks. What is important is acceleration over 5 yards. Ask your dad about Stanley Mathews for an explanation of this.
But you aren't inferring that qualities needed to play at a high level in the 50's are still relevant now?
You need different options to break down teams, and pace is certainly something that you need in the game today to be a success.

not just me then!?
What isn't just you? I don't think we're doomed because we haven't got pace. Three quick and accurate passes can release a player into a dangerous area and can be harder to defend against than a ball over the top. They'll be times when we could do with someone fast but it won't be that often.

Not just the 50's, look through the ages at Muller, Maradonna, Messi. It was that turn of foot that put defenders on their arses, not their out and out pace.

Where's the logic in this?

Are you suggesting that the lower the league the slower the players are? If so, by the time you've got down to the Norther Premier League the players will be going backwards!
I've said the same, are they stronger, faster and bigger in the Championship? No.
The level goes up but they aren't all superhuman up here.

I didn't realise you were snootyfenooty's Dad.

You don't believe those players had pace? The speed which Maradonna and Messi in particular can move with the ball is/was electric.

I'm suggesting exactly that. The pace of a non league game is much slower than the championship.
There is a difference between the pace of the game and the pace of players.

Slow players can play the game at a fantastic pace by knowing what they want to do with the ball or reading the game before a pacey player has had a sniff.

Yes, the pace of the game in non league is slower but you can still have pacey players at that standard.

But they don't have the speed of thought to be dangerous at a higher level though. I've seen plenty who can run faster than their opponents but if they haven't got the brain they stay in non-league.

Messi perhaps but no way Maradonna. He was only 5'4" and you don't get sprinters this size. His asset was his first touch and bang, off he went. Defenders didn't even have time to react. He looked quicker than he was as the ball was stuck permanently to his toecap. Anyway, different topic, I could talk about him all day.

I'm afraid I haven't owned a FM game since about '09.

Yep. Cyrus Christie, Dominic Iorfa spring to mind.

I actually looked at the player list on telegraph fantasy football to refresh my memory though. Doesn't tell me which ones are quick, just reminds me which ones are still in the championship.

Wow....that's a scary list of not a lot!
So only 10 clubs that will finish above us then eh?

Good god, it's a worry.

No im not suggesting that but there is a difference, not just in the pace of a player but the pace of everything. You dont get as much time on the ball in the championship.

Another pearler.

So which of our players touch isn't good enough to cope with an increase in pace.?

Wow....that's a scary list of not a lot!

Good god, it's a worry.

Not saying they will all finish above us or that they are the only players with pace. I don't profess to know the strengths and weaknesses of every championship player. Just a list of those that stand out as being fast. I'm sure there are more and I'm sure there are teams that have fast players that will finish below us. Mark Little at Bolton for example is lightening quick but I still expect us to finish above them. We have a lot of good attributes in our team. Out and out pace is one are where we are arguably lacking though. Doesn't make us shit, just one element of our arsenal that might not be as strong as others.

Get John Cofie and Michael O'Halloran in, they are living proof that pace = exquisite footballing ability.

Don't forget Jonathan Forte and Poleon too.

Cofie had a good touch. He was just too nesh to be a footballer.

I'll give you 'nesh' and I'll raise you 'selfish' and 'no bloody clue where his teammates are'.

Apart from those very minor matters, he really was a wonderful footballer. Probably talking to PSG as we speak.....
