Sheffield United defender Derek Geary has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious ankle injury.

The 29-year-old Irishman only returned in November from a knee injury that ruled him out for 15 months and threatened to finish his career.

"That will be Del done for the rest of the season," Blades manager Kevin Blackwell told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"He had come back from such a bad knee injury, which would have finished most - to have this is a savage blow."

Seems like this might signal his retirement, surely he can't fight his way back from yet another injury and if so, is it worth it? Good luck to him whatever he does, he was awesome in the PL season.

Massive shame if it does, but if it's completely unrelated to the knee injury it might give him time to properly rehabilitate his knee.

All the best, Del. "UTB FTP".

If that's it for Del, at least at United, just like to say ta very much for undeniable effort, spirit and surprising ability - and that cracker at Millwall a few moons ago even if it meant talking very quietly on the way out.

Can I raise my joint testimonial idea again?? Foxy/Mrs Foxy, is it something you'd consider mentioing to someone itk?

Top player and a true Blade. Should go down as a United legend based solely on spirit and determination.

I hope this isnt it for Del but I fear the worst. He's still young though so don't write him off yet. I think he's just unlucky.

Geary! Geary! Geary!

Geary! Geary! Geary!

Indeed. As it's not a reoccurance of his knee injury, I imagine there's every hope he'll be able to return. And has already been pointed out, perhaps he'll be able to give the knee a bit of a rest/strengthening in the time out.

As a club we've had some rotten luck this season, and this just typifies it. Will we offer him a contract in the summer I wonder? A few years ago at the very least we'd probably have offered a deal linked to game-time - with the current finances as they are, I'm not sure we'd be prepared to even go with that...

Luck O D Oiirish

The key thing is that its a different injury, it'll probably do his knee some good to not be playing for a few months.

He's come back from a seemingly much worse injury than this, so keep going Del Boy!

If the rest of the team had anything like the spirit of Del then we'd be flying up the league

If they had his knees and ankles, we be fooked :D

We should have a testimonial and commision a statue of Del for the Car Park, with the inscription:

"Quondam a sus, Usquequaque a Vesica"

Or In Gaelic

"Nuair a Muc, i gcónaí ar Blade"

:D

Massive shame for the lad.

We are seriously fucked in defence at the moment. What if any loans get recalled? We'll be totally buggered....

With Morgan and Seip imminently returning, we'll probably be fine, assuming nobody's recalled. I imagine Wenger has only given us Bartley on the condition that he plays regularly, so I'd expect him to partner Morgs, with Nosworthy switching to right back, where he has played for other teams in the past.

This will about finish the guy!
Excellent servant for the Blades
Give him a testimonial
Put him on the payroll!
Top Man

I don't think it would be so bad, if his contract wasnt running out at the end of the season.

Really devastated that we probably won't be able to see him running up and down the wing like an irish whippet before wilting to the floor in exhaustion to the deafening chorus of "GEARY! GEARY! GEARY!"
