Dean Saunders post-match interview

When you go 1-0 up so early the other team generally will come at you more.

I agree Sheffielder. However, that doesn't excuse giving away possession poorly. We do need to "take control" of midfield a little more imo

On another day, against another team we could have easily conceded, but I don't want to take a way a good result for us on the back of an embarrassing one last weekend. Well done lads!

Absolutely, we need Wallace fit and another. We currently have two guys in there who are not playing their career positions.

I couldn't get to the match today but after just listening to Dean Saunders post-match interview he is of the opinion that they have dominated all over!
I'm well chuffed with the result and was just wondering how we played today.

We won . Thats all that matters.

Would we have been happy with Saunders as manager- No

You have no idea whether you are going to get promoted or relegated.

Make no mistake Chesterfield are a good side , therefore even more pleasing we played well and got 3 points.

Listened to P &G on the way home and Saunders didn't give an after game interview. Possibly sulking?

They were surprisingly good - they've got no right to be given the quality & number of players they sold. But to say they "dominated" is seriously over-egging the pudding. They were ineffective where it matters, apart from forcing lots of corners (which we defended well) & the late flurry of free-kicks (some of which were of excellent quality, it has to be said). They never looked like scoring from open-play though. They lack cutting edge, going by that showing.

Even though we're clearly a work in progress, the difference in quality in the key areas (up-front & centrally at the back) was stark. Yes, we ceded too much ground in midfield, but we're in the process of adapting to 442 &, admittedly, Morsy is a very decent player.

They had good spells of possession but didn't dominate in the most important part (goals scored). I was not confident when we were penned in, I'm still not 100% sold on our defence. But given time I think that'll change.

A few thoughts on this and the game overall.

1.) Possession doesn't denote dominating a game or being the better side. Chesterfield had the ball a lot but didn't nothing substantial with it. I think they had 2-3 really good chances and all came from a set piece launched into the box, not from dominating possession and then making a killer pass once we'd been moved out of position by there retention of the ball.
2.) We had all the best chances from open play.
3.) Ryan Flynn will make a huge difference to that side if played on the right, and could be a key player this season.
4.) Baxter struggles in a central two and probably isn't good/intelligent enough to do it, which is a shame. Wallace and Basham could be a perfect 2 if we go 4-4-2.
5.) Adams will need to be brought in and out of the side as he will need a break given his age and very likely inconsistencies. It's dangerous to build him into either a finished article or a "must starter", he isn't and should be allowed to develop and learn. A couple of times yesterday he needed something more than his directness and pace and looked reluctant to take opportunities on his left. All to be expected given his age but let's not get carried away with him, he's still very raw.
6.) Billy was very impressive yesterday and showed McNulty exactly what Clough was taking about last season. He was selfless in his work, creating space for others and running channels and if that is something this Billy Sharp can maintain then he's something special at this level and he's going to be some asset. He's clearly learnt that there is more to being considered a good player than just being the goalscorer and McNulty should watch and learn. Someone on FH yesterday suggested that yesterday puts pressure on Sharp with Adams who should be up top with Sammon. This is nonsense, Sharp was very very good yesterday and playing him will help Adams immeasurably.
7.) We still look very vulnerable at the back to direct play, a side with better forwards will punish us.

Probably should come in at 5 1/2 in Bobs list, but it's pleasing we have more than one threat going forward. Part of the problem last season was the "give it to Jamie and he'll do some magic" approach was boxed off fairly quickly by oppos. We've a nice balance between pace, power and poaching in the side as set up yesterday.

Decent start, plenty to be getting on with, but a big well done from me for everyone considering the upheaval of the last week and the potential for it all to have got very toxic indeed.

Good day out, enhanced by Raulito's round-buying debut and his decision to leave early to get the 5.20 home on his tod, only to change his mind halfway to station and go to the Rutty instead. 8/10.
