I thought he was treated harshly by United, so good luck to him at Chesterfield. Has anyone else managed four of the six local sides (Barnsley, Wednesday, the Blades and Chesterfield)?

My only objection to his initial appointment at United was his mixed managerial record beforehand.
I thought that the hatred he got from a lot of United fans just because he happened to be an employee of the Pigs years ago was a bit pathetic.

I met him once and shook his hand, he was a thoroughly decent and courteous bloke. I hope he succeeds at some point in his career (maybe not with Chesterfield though because I don't like them).

Out of all my time supporting United I've never looked forward to visiting the Lane as much as I did in that 2011-12 season with Wilson in charge. Although I put this down to United having a insanely good team for that season's League 1, not Wilson's Managerial skills. He's a League 1 steady eddy and I suspect that he'll do alright this season, then okay next until he loses 6 from 8 and gets the sack.

He probably won't get them relegated. He probably won't get them promoted. Safe pair of hands for the situation I think. He was unlucky that first season with us. 2nd season we started to lose our way, but on reflection we should have stuck with him till the summer.

I wanted Chris Hughton after Speed left and he was my preferred choice after Adams with sacked. I recall McCabe said that RDM had "texted to say he was interested" and that Hughton "was affordable". Both were out of work at the time.

McCabe always seemed to go for the cheap option.
It's only since the Prince and Phipps came on board that managers with a good track record have been appointed.

After the Brentford away game in the spring of Ched's last season, we were sat outside the pub on the corner that featured in Green st. He walked past on his own to the primary school where the team buses wait. So went across shook his hand and said briefly ' Danny you're gonna take us up aren't you'. He replied ' I really hope so'. His eyes showed he was genuine and he had no pretensions walking by. Really we should have given him a little longer and if Ched's trial had been three weeks later we would have gone up.

"I feel sorry for Wilson. He seems a nice guy, was a penalty away last season from success (not to mention close to automatic before Evans disappeared), and has had key parts of the squad dismantled. I wanted to see him given the chance to turn it around till the summer. To remove him, when mathematically it's in our hands still, smacks of everything that's been wrong in this ridiculous season of managerial changes.

However, some of his decisions have been poor. One of the first decisions he made was to have Doyle as his captain, which I thought at the time was a surprise (either an established player at the club like Monty, or someone new that was his man, would have made more sense), and then some of his signings this year, have been poor. His decisions recently not to do the blatantly obvious have been frustrating. And that first half at Walsall on Saturday was inexplicably awful.

Will Morgs, in his back room team, do differently? Maybe. I can't imagine that given a possible list of people for a new coaching staff that Wilson would have picked Morgan - he inherited him, representing some consistency with the club, while also being the 'nice thing to do' for a guy that had been with us years and was nearing retirement. He is a complete stab in the dark - but it might just be that a kick up the arse (which he will no doubt have at the forefront of his managerial style) is what's needed in these remaining games.

In general though, I've very little faith in McCabe's ability to choose the right person for the job. He's only really only done that once in the years he's been chairman."

Originally dead set against him managing us cause of his pigs connection,
But when he started supported him , and thought he was harshly treated in his second year , when all his best
players where sold from under his feet , and we got left with all the make do stuff , that we still have left on the books, the make do stuff , not his signings.
Also people do , and rightly so criticise our board for its present perceived lack of support for our manager,
But in our first season down , they did put their hand in their pocket and kept all our "talent " and it was pure bad luck , or a certain players sexual choice that eventually fucked our season up.
Bear the guy no malice and hope he does ok , but really do hate those Chessie fuckers. After being done their twice in the one night and a mate having his car nicked after a night game there , it was found back in Sheff.
As an aside was walking home from getting my ears lowered this morning , when a car stopped at the junction and a guy waved me over the road had my Blades hat on it was then I noticed the pigs sticker on the back window, Wicklow is infected with the pigs virus. 04 piece of shit .

I thought he was extremely unlucky with us.
I liked the football he played and his attitude, I for one wish him success even at Chesterfield.

Seems like a decent manager who's been too happy to settle down and get on with his job while he takes the flak for boards screwing his teams over.

He took over a side that couldn't pass a ball and, even if at a lower level, got them playing the most attractive football I've seen from us. Not only unlucky with the Ched saga but unlucky that it was a very strong division that year with Charlton, Pigs, us, Huddersfield, MK all being very competitive. Missing out with 90pts having lost a striker, and then losing McDonald for the play-off final (someone who to me was just as influential as Evans), was the kind of catastrophe that can only happen to the Blades. It would've seen us safely promoted in plenty of other years. We scored 92 goals, best in the division, and enjoyed a spell of 19 games undefeated.

The next season, we started without most of the attacking players from the previous year. Still, he picked up Blackman for pennies and had him running for top scorer, only to lose him at Christmas to the same old excuses. Gone was much of the exciting possession football, in was a much more familiar set of grafters; still we had the second best defensive record with only Swindon conceding fewer goals. We sacked him late on and finished 8pts shy of 2nd. Who knows what could've been if he'd had some backing in the JTW when we all saw the league was wide open?

I don't want to make him out to be one of the greats, but I read a lot of negative comments when his name comes up. To me, he got a lot right, and should at least be remembered as a very unlucky nearly man rather than a serial failure.

Unfortunately, anyone taking the Chesterfield job right now is on a hiding to nothing. Their budget restrictions show a complete ambition after last season's over-achievement. Maybe this is the level of job that Wilson can get right now, but he's setting himself up for his usual pattern and that'll be why he goes down in relative footballing anonymity.

Totally agree with PokerBlades comment above.

I have a lot time for Wilson and wish him well.
We played some fantastic football under Wilson.
Its the only time I've been so calm watching United.
We could concede 2 early goals but I knew we would create at least a dozen chances
And I always felt confident we'd come back to win.

Also I've never seen us totally outclass teams on a regular as we did under Wilson in that first season. It was amazing bad luck that we didn't gain auto promotion.
Remember our unlucky defeats to Charlton when they robbed us and we conceded several last minute goals.

It's going to be extremely difficult for him at Chesterfield, thinks it's a club on a downward spiral.

well he did fade away badly at the Lane Wilson , first season with a good squad got 90 points and dreadfully unlucky circumstances did for our season
but never kept the momentum
and then at Barnsley, really struggled , and looked incapable of motivating

Danny is a a great bloke and a competent league 1 manager. Wish him and Frank Barlow all the best, the circumstances around his sacking and how it was handled by the club were very poor (text message to DW asking him to let FB know as well).

Glad he's got a 2/3 mile commute to work and hope it works out for him, don't like Chesterfield as a club and can't stand Turner but DW and FB I have a lot of time and respect for, for a number of reasons.
