I get why people are down on the Ebrell signing, but.... I am guess the thinking behind it was that we had to buy a 'risky' player because we couldn't get a Premiership player any other way. Signing him injured and hence uninsured was pretty witless though in honesty.Which are the most ridiculous signings we have ever made, not due to their quality but the circumstances
Start the ball rolling with
John Ebbrell
Signed with a history of injuries which meant nominee would insure him and we all know what happened
Leon Britton
Signed by Blackwell to boss our midfield, but then proceeded to miss it out by kicking the ball back to front and missing out midfield
It's not a daft signing though, is it? We needed cover for Wes just in case, and that's exactly what we got.The Goalie we signed from Stoke in the JTW. Poor bloke signed on a 6 month deal and hasn't had a look in. His contract will have ended and he hasnt played any football. Not his fault at all, or anyone's really, just one of those things.
Bollocks!!!! Clough signed Chris Basham that summer.Andy Butler
EDIT - In fact all of Clough's signings that summer.
All we needed was to sign Coady on a permanent, get a striker in and a replacement for Maguire.
In the end we ended up with a bloated squad with no real quality
I think you win mateDean Hammond. Not just useless. Very fucking expensive.
I have been waiting years, to hear someone else say this !At the time I thought James Beattie was a pointless signing - in some respects I still do.
We had Stead, Hulse, Shelton, Webber and then Sharp added in. I thought with Hulse coming back we'd have a really strong strikeforce anyway, the big thing was lack of creativity in midfield, we really suffered in the prem without an influential playmaker. We then spent 4 Million on Beattie who was terrible the season before at Everton on 40K a week.
Unpopular opinion as well, when we sold Beattie, we actually played better with Ward and Henderson going into the playoffs, for whatever reason Blackwell signed Craig Beattie and played him as a loan striker with Halford and Cotterill on the wings, which worked, but we were rubbish in the Palace game and the Playoff final.
He signed on the day.Mervyn Day - Yes, we were desperate, but there must have been plenty of other options
Probably that they were getting the No1 GK with over 50 capps from a top 20 Ranked National team?Robin Olsen - What were the Club thinking!???
Febian Brandy
It was a bit scattergun but to be fair Kilgannon and Jon Stead were both decent in my opinion.Warnock in Jan 2007 cost us years and years in the wilderness.
Stead chipped in with vital goals and if were not for Hulse getting injured, we'd have been fine.It was a bit scattergun but to be fair Kilgannon and Jon Stead were both decent in my opinion.
Probably that they were getting the No1 GK with over 50 capps from a top 20 Ranked National team?
That will have been what they were thinking they were getting.
Bit like ordering summat from Wish.....
Fully agree, just seems to be a catalogue of hindsight on this thread though
