Wilder to get all 'um motivated and the three leaders down the spine of the team making sure it doesn't let up during the duration of the game.

Being as this is a Sheffield United forum and we have just sacked a manager ... one of plenty who we all got excited about when he was appointed right back to one Robson B and all of whom have been royally fucked by the board by the depletion of the strengths of the squad, forgive me if I don't join in the fucking street party welcoming yet another miserable stooge for McCabe's fucked up footballing principles.

Someone on here tonight acknowledged my cynicism last summer at Adkin's appointment and the fact that for all intents a purposes, his opening statement sounded like he had McCabe's hand up his arse, working the controls. If you really believe Wilder will be any different, spit on your palm and bet me a tenner we aren't still in division one next May and watching him clear his desk. Because his opening statement sounds very much like Adkins', and a game into the season one of those we had hoped was retained was actually sold, and the money went nowhere.

I'll watch out for your posts over the next twelve months. I hope they explain a shitload of shit if we start next season with practically the same team we ended this season with.

Let it be said, Wilson, Blackwell, Clough, Adkins ... were not bad football team managers, and neither is Wilder.

This is all too predictable. The new manager wants to see what the current defence is like. He needs a chance to see what they can do, so presumably that will take us into Nov-Dec before a decision is reached. Of course, if the managerial judgement isn't up to what is needed we'll have the same defence, maybe minus one or two existing players. Same goes for midfield, so I dread to think of the consequence all of this will have on what the team's ambitions are meant to be. Will a good season be seen as finishing two places above the position Adkins team finished? I hope my cynicism is proved to be wrong, but I'm underwhelmed about the long-term strategy (assuming there is one?) that emanates from our board, as long as the belief that a club like ours deserves much better. We get what we deserve, at least all the while the quality of decision making is so poor and lacking in ambition.

I'd agree. Wilder has to be made aware that THIS IS IT. No more bullshit, no more excuses. He should be moving heaven and earth to hit the ground running and the Adkins-esque excuse of 'clean slates' just won't wash. He can watch all the DVDs he wants. Watching a DVD of the Scunthorpe game last Sunday would just show the usual mistakes that led to their goals. It wouldn't convey the absolute despair among the fans and the feeling of inevitability that we were going to lose again. At home. To Scunthorpe. The feeling of relief that the game - and season - was finally over with no further damage. He can chat with any 'backroom staff' he wants and they'll just be concerned about protecting their own jobs. He needs to quickly seek the fans' opinions - not 'Brian the Blade' types but many on this forum. I've never known our fans HATE a bunch of United players as much as we do with this lot. In an ideal world, I'd keep Billy, Che and maybe George and the rest can just go and fuck off.

I don't see why the lack of a significant budget should affect much. Can anybody blame McCabe for crying 'enough' when he sees the vast sums that has been wasted on under-achieving, past-it players in terms of ridiculous wages? Sure, Wigan spent a bit last season but only finally got going after January. But what significant money have Burton, Walsall, Millwall, Bradford or Barnsley spent? Not much, but they're good enough to be in the play-offs, having left United far behind. Any manager who uses 'lack of funds' as an excuse in this piss-poor division isn't good enough.

It's one thing noting "one year option to extend" but the more relevant point is who has the right to exercise the option: the club or the player. In any sane world, the option would rest with the club, but this is Sheffield United we're talking about - I've got a horrible feeling we might have given the option to a player or two in the past.

Given that CW's team tend to be set up to counter attack and the fact that during the Blades recent 'successes' - cup runs and big scalps in those runs - they often set up for the counter, should we really be surprised if the likes of Scougal and Flynn are in CW plans? The Nigel #1 teams did ok but needed a few additions - some quality up front being to of many people's list. We now have that quality in Che and Billy. With some quality pace on the wings and a big strong pair at the back, we could have a winning formula - what's left of Nige#1 team + Billy + a few L2/L1 gems and we could have a solid go at it.

I think the one advantage being a Blade will give him is that he has mates who watch us. Assuming they're not total pillocks (and you'd guess the mates he's stayed in touch with all these years won't be) he'll already have a good idea about how we're feeling, who we rate, who we hate.

He'll know that setting up to counter won't win us promotion though. Too many teams are happy to come away from the Lane with a draw. We need a style of play that will open these teams up when they come and sit deep.
