Your crackers you Pinchy haha.
Always make me laugh with your obsession over hoof.

Personally I couldnt give a fuck how we play as long as we get out of this damn league...

Fwiw the Cobblers fans say he doesnt play hoof at all.

But dont let that cloud things for you pal.

Once you understand what the rest of the footballing world already knows, that "how you play" is not some kind of optional extra but actually fundamental to whether you succeed or not, then you'll get it. Alternatively, get yourself off to Plough Lane to see how Wimbledon are doing...

Stop fannying about Messi you cunt and gerritintbox.

I'm not sure quite how often I'll have to explain this before it penetrates granite-thick S2 skulls.

I continue to despair....

The vocal ones that McCabe panders to and will get him the sack if he upsets them.

That's a philosophy of despair that ought to be avoided at all costs. The 'vocal ones' are ignorant Neanderthals with the cumulative brain power of a gnat.

Someone on here tonight acknowledged my cynicism last summer at Adkin's appointment and the fact that for all intents a purposes, his opening statement sounded like he had McCabe's hand up his arse, working the controls.

having just watched that speech he gave at Notts County that the Cobbler fan cobbler150 posted a link to, I can't see it being like that with Wilder.

I look it this differently. Too many managers give it the 'it'll be a tough game against Bury/Rochdale/insert alternative nonentity" thing. I don't want to hear how dangerous some fourth division striker is. Do your perpetration by all means, Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition by all means. Then send your team out to show how much better they are, not in fear and trembling of fucking Scunthorpe.

The fans are as bad. How often did I read how we were going to get 'battered' by Aston Villa/QPR/Soton/Spurs? Luckily the much maligned Mr. Clough didn't agree...
The "much maligned Mr Clough" played a style that was suited to countering the big boys. It was far more acceptable than when he applied the same style against "fucking Scunthorpe". :)

I'm with you in so much as we should be more arrogant in our approach to these teams, not less.

UTB

Anybody who thinks Bassett played a HOOF game is either too young to have been there or simply believes the hype. For the first 6 seasons of his tenure we played a superb 5-3-2 with overlapping wingbacks, pacy and direct but we rarely just tossed it over the top in the hope that someone would get on the end of it. more often than not the wingbacks played it inside and then ran onto the return ball to then play the ball into the onrushing strikers (my ageing memory is helped by the fact that I have every televised goal we have scored since the 1960s). You don't become the highest scoring team in the whole of Europe in a season by hopefully banging the ball forwards. 120 goals? FFS. Deane 30, Agana 30, sorry, but tossing it forwards and picking up the scraps just doesn't get that for you. There was genuine quality in Bassett's teams, as well as the "water-carriers". If Hodges could have given a toss he could have played in a top 6 side.

Yes, the last season and a half under Bassett was tragic, but what went before gave many Blades the best times of their footballing lives, and the so-called footballing intelligentsia that we've had since aren't fit to serve Harry a pint.

Yes Dave Bassett. 100 points and 100 goals in the third tier, two consecutive promotions, A Derby double over the pigs, discovered the best out and out centre forward we have had in about 50 years and four consecutive seasons in the the top flight.. All achieved with no money and having his best players sold from him year upon year.

Rubbish though in Pinchy land.

And what the fuck has Vnnie Jones a player who spent less than twelve months here in the seven years Bassett was manager got do with it?

If i was old enough to have seen Harris' team I may well put him at the top of the list.

I'm not so Bassett is head and shoulders above any other manager we have had since 1980. Warnock a distant second. Porterfield an even further back thrird.

Bassett picked us up by the short and curlies when we were drifting , languishing, small gates , zero excitement. I know , I was there...as were most on here.

In a short time he resurrected our club, injected passion and restored self belief and self esteem .

He will always be a legend in my eyes, won't have a word said against him , for the plastic pitch victory at Oldham and Filbert Street if nowt else ...

Not sure if you serious with this. We played 4-4-2 in nearly all the games under Bassett

On the team sheet yes, but there was always a deep lying CMF sitting in so the wing backs could get forward, creating a 3 CB arrangement when needed. A "classic" 4-4-2 it never was

I was surprised to see Terry Kennedy playing today, I thought he had been told he wasn't being retained? He threw his shirt into the crowd at the end of a game, so maybe it was his farewell?

Hope that, if Tel is retained after all, CW is one for having very streuous pre-season fitness regimes. Our Terence is looking a little on the portly side these days...

Don't agree. It was a classic 4-4-2. A solid back 4. Two wingers who got early crosses in.. A midfield two were big work horses who would battle for every 2nd ball coming back from the front two or the centre half's.One of them was usually more athletic than the other but we never sat one in front of the centre half's in a deep lying role as we didn't defend deep.

Poster on, ugh... "Bladesmad" says Wilder's decided to retain Howard.

I do hope that's wrong.

Signing a new goalkeeper is not difficult, or expensive.

Only acceptable explanation for that for me would be if Long is leaving and Howard's staying as cheap back up to a new keeper.

You know, I know, 20,000+ others know.
Sheffield United don't do acceptable explanations.

It's like being married, but with United it's far more important..

Bladey Bladey Bollocks. Both Dinosaur Dave and 'Ol Big Nose' took us back to exactly where they found us. Bassett, in particular has left lasting damage. His legacy is a tolerance, indeed a liking, for crude, rudimentary, ugly, unskilled, ale house football that has tainted this club for the best part of thirty years and counting ...astonishingly, some single-celled idiots would have him back....

Ian Porterfield was hounded out for the gross failure of taking us up two divisions and daring to lose a game or two.

Love United; Hate Football.

what i meant to say was YAWN !! TOTAL CRAP

NA released him but - maybe he's one of the "surprises"? He certainly seems to be a CW-type?

If Wilder has kept a good eye on us, he'll have looked at how reliable Kennedy is as a regular first-teamer and draw the most logical of conclusions on his future. He will surely also be aware of his failed fitness-building trip to Cambridge. With the exception of Long, if Wilder looks at who's up for renewal and decides to get rid of the lot in favour of hungrier more reliable players I'll be delighted.

There is no argument. Football won it hands down post-Wimbledon. The dark shadow of Hoof is now cast solely over S2...

I remember the John Harris years but you still talk SHITE. Not interested in your childish Hoof comments. Piss off & watch Barcelona then

OK - we clearly saw different games mate. In the ones I saw, the wingbacks often overlapped the wingers. You can't do that if a CMF isn't sitting in to cover. Have a chat with Harry and see what his view is ;)

I think the one advantage being a Blade will give him is that he has mates who watch us. Assuming they're not total pillocks (and you'd guess the mates he's stayed in touch with all these years won't be) he'll already have a good idea about how we're feeling, who we rate, who we hate.
He will hit the ground running. He will have had the "heads up" weeks ago.

Pedantic lawyer klaxon - though there's no shortage of us on here, and most of you seem to tolerate us most of the time...

It's one thing noting "one year option to extend" but the more relevant point is who has the right to exercise the option: the club or the player. In any sane world, the option would rest with the club, but this is Sheffield United we're talking about - I've got a horrible feeling we might have given the option to a player or two in the past.

LoughboroBlade Do you know whose options they are in your list?

I'd hope a finish outside of the top six takes away the option if it's with the player.

He will hit the ground running. He will have had the "heads up" weeks ago.

Agree

Couple of things.

One; he watches the Blades when he can but his mates who's opinions he will trust will watch us regularly so he will know the score with the squad already.

Two; he will have players on a wish list that he would wish Northampton might just spoz as a signing that SUFC will be able to sign.

Chill, it's all in hand.

Ah but they don't say that he's not a Bladey Blade

Let's be fair, if there's a few retained, we can hardly be surprised. I appreciated most were happy with Adkins being sacked but surely you all know that this would be an inevitable side-effect? Virtually The ONLY reason I wanted to keep Adkins was that I knew, at the very least he would allow all contracts to expire as they were the players that would have (nearly) cost him his job.

Wilder doesn't know these players. He doesn't know who is worth keeping and who to get rid of, why would he? So he keeps a few (based on nothing really because he won't even get a pre-season before making his mind up. We then can't afford new players and the cycle begins again. I wasn't pleased with Adkins either but the fact remains this was always going to happen with a new manager.
Yes he does. He knows EXACTLY.
