Impressed Adkins can’t wait to go with the Flo (ho ho ho)

Florent Cuvelier - so that's what he looks like
Nigel Adkins last night admitted he is excited by the prospect of working with Florent Cuvelier after revealing the former Belgium under-21 international has made significant progress in his battle against injury.

Cuvelier, whose career at Bramall Lane has been beset by fitness issues, has yet to make a competitive appearance this term and Saturday’s win over Scunthorpe came almost a year to the day since his previous outing in a Sheffield United jersey.

Nigel Adkins - you don't say
Although Adkins refused to confirm whether Cuvelier would be declared available for selection over the Christmas period, he told The Star: “Flo has been brilliant. He’s certainly a player we’ve been talking about as a coaching staff because we’ve been really impressed with him in training. He’s getting closer and closer now.”

Cuvelier was widely regarded as one of the Football League’s most promising talents when, having impressed on loan at Walsall, he joined United in September 2013. However, 27 months and only eight starts later, he had become the forgotten man of Bramall Lane when Adkins took charge during the close season. Nevertheless, Cuvelier’s passing repertoire and polished technique could make him a tempting proposition for the 50-year-old who, in Jose Baxter’s absence, has lacked a creative dynamic in United’s midfield.

Adkins, who recently acknowledged members of his squad must be “robust enough” to play around “40 games a season”, said: “Flo is stronger and, because of that, hopefully a lot more confident in his own body now. You need to have that belief moving forward. He’s had a sustained period of training and so that should have helped in that regard. He’s been working really hard and, like I say, we’ve been really impressed with what we’ve seen.”

Not sure how much of this is genuine excitement or just a way of building him up for potential buyers. I don't recall him being an ideal fit for a 4-4-2, which we know is Adkins's preferred formation.
I hope it's the latter. Pay as you play contract, or the door.

I'll be gutted if him or Wallace are kept on, whatever happens from now on.

I predict after a few weeks of building him up we'll have a few sub appearances to prove he's alive and able to move. This will be quickly followed by Adkins talking about how he's got a settled midfield and that it's such a shame we can't get him more game time, because he really is a promising player. He will then be loaned out till the summer, then ditched.

All this negativity surrounding Cuvelier astounds me.

The lad has to be one of the most unluckiest in the recent history of Sheffield United and due to this he has never had a fair crack of the whip.

I remember what he did for Walsall and if he could get up to fitness and replicate performances like those in a Sheffield United shirt, then he would be a first team regular for us.

Regardless I think he deserves a sniff now before the window opens to see if he can cut it. If he can't then fair play he will have to go but no doubt he will go on to be a cracking player elsewhere when completely fit again.

I agree with everything you say, the question is though will he ever be completely fit again for the rest of his career? I suppose there's only one way to find out but do we risk giving him a contract extension when there will almost certainly be other options out there who are already able to play on similar or reduced wages?

I'm a sucker for a highlight reel!
Can't wait to have him back now.

Perfect replacement for Baxter....who isn't injured but plays like he is.
Good ball player and much speedier. Hope he makes a good comeback.

Can't understand all this negativity about cavalier he's been very unlucky with injuries all stemming from his recovery from a cruciate repair,.
22 and thrown on the scrap heap .A fair number of players have lost 1 to 2 years with serious and niggling injuries but come back and had great careers (you can add James Wallace to that list as well another young player just 23 thrown to the wolves according to some negative
blades). There's no guarantee s but both players are potentially premiership quality and we have been unlucky investing time and money in
them will little to show so far..To throw away that investment when both are showing signs of getting back to full fitness would be crazy.
If we RELEASE them some lucky clubs will benefit from the investment we have put in them., stick with them I say we will get the benefits
in the long run,I trust Adkins to get them playing again.

It's been frustrating waiting for him and Wallace to get fit,but both would be like new signings if they can get over their injuries..wouldn't mind Cuvelier in for Woolford on the left against Wigan, sounds like Adkins rates him.

Cuvelier deserves a chance. And, given what's happened/happening with Coutts, I think he might get one and thrive physically.

I think Wallace has been given his chance and not taken it. Looking at his playing record he's managed at most 20 games in a season and (anecdotally) hardly ever completed a full week's training.

Totally agree with everything...Adkins seems to know how and when the time is right to bring them back . Always liked the look of Cavalier from day one ,seems a level headed bloke too. Could be just right time to return

He's undoubtedly talented and he's on contract until the end of the season.
24 games to prove he's worth it.
End of the season it's still the same it's goodby I'm afraid.

Yes I have checked his stats a few times Mr Foulkes but I still think it would be daft to give up on him now ,he's 23 could still put all that behind him and still under contract here.He is now under pressure to win another contract here or elseware in the summer I hope he comes through and makes it with us.

I guess it all depends on how many perennially injured players we should want to keep on the books.

Any advance on zero?

saw him when we played Southampton in cup allthough all the team had a great performance cuvelier stood out the most to me good passing had a good shot on goal could not understand why clough loaned him out to burton if adkins wants to play this lad when hes fit damn good choice from him not saying he'l be the best midfielder we have but he comes close to it

re Wallace - These is an out of date article regarding his career to 2012 here - http://everything.explained.today/James_Wallace_(footballer)/

This quote from his Shrewsbury loan stands out

"Despite only playing three times for the club in the space of two months due to the three-match suspension and "injury problems",[26] Turner stated a desire to renew the loan deal for a third time — "Wallace hasn't had the best time here – he's only played about 40 minutes in his two months with us due to not being able to play in the FA Cup, suspension and injuries. I want him to get back to Everton get his injury cleared up, and we'll take it on from there"

Any long term absentee needs to be playing 60% of our games between January and the end of the season to be even considered being kept on. For all there talent we are just not in a position to be carrying them like we are. Both Flo and Wallace have undoubted ability but they are useless to us when they spend 40 games a season on the treatment table

Same ive been to 95% of the home games & handful of away games last few years sjnce he signed but I still can only say he looks a great prospect & has impressed me but only on the short glimpses ive seen. Because of his bad luck with injury. I think only twice I can remember him Southampton & another L1 side last season came off bench late on & set up a goal almost a immediately with a peach of a cross

I doubt James or Flo will be kept on beyond this season because I think both of them will only play a handful of games. They are decent enough players who would easily improve our midfield but it is clear that their careers are on a downward spiral.

It's sad because no one wants to see promising footballers have to call it a day but if they can't play more than 5 matches a season then how do they expect to keep their career going. We as a club can't keep these players on in the hope that their injury problems will suddenly clear up overnight.

Maybe Flo or James will comeback and not suffer a setback but its wishful thinking.

I often say this to people but don't get too hung up on formation. It's more about how players in that formation are deployed and how they're asked to operate within it.

In Flo's case he could be asked to play to his strengths in any formation. I saw him play games for Walsall in wide and central roles and mostly in conventional formations like a 4-4-2. I would welcome him back, we lack quality across the middle.

I always liked the look of Cuvelier when he played, pacey and tricky, although not a physically strong player (from memory) for League One. Like Wallace, he has had terrible injury problems. I would like to think both could still play a role because both are infinitely better than what we have in the middle of the park. If it doesn't work out for us, then best of luck to both in whatever they do in the future.

The one where he came off bench n set up a goal was Plymouth in cup for McNulty I think

Hopefully he will be in contention over the festive period. I believe his best position would be similar to how Leeds played Kewell around 1999/2000. Kind of a free role. I think another Winger and a CB coupled with abit of luck and we'll go up.

Adkins needs to do what Clough did and strip the team to basics and then slowly introduce the more flair players. I remember when he first came in and Murphy was almost on his way back to Scotland, Brandy was rightly dropped, Baxter similar although he worked hard to retain his place. Cuvelier was never given a chance and I believe that was because he gave away a last minute free kick that lead to a goal.

Can imagine Baxter going Burton in January.
