Cuvelier Update

We can probably say we've been unlucky with Cuvelier – he didn't appear to join us with existing injuries, and the type of injury he picked up was unfortunate. For James Wallace, it was clearly a massive gamble given his injury history – and given we had to pay Tranmere a fee following tribunal, I think it's fair to say this signing was a mistake.

Oh I Agree about Wallace, but not a mistake of his doing.

Not sad , just reiterates the valid point that the recruitment policy on a number of players , has not been good enough , especially for a club operating under financial restraints and the ultimate aim of promotion, Tells us what we already know , but lets hope we now carry out more due deligence on potential players fitness and characters .

So are you questing Cuvllier's character, tell us more about what you know...

If you are on a fixed budget there is no real advantage in having a Porsche if its always going in for repairs and you end up having to hire a car to get to work. Reliability and consistency is important. Wallace is a bit like a Porsche bought at auction. He can only be relied on to get break down frequently and is consistently in the garage. Wallace has never been fit enough to even go out on loan. Cuvelier I have slightly more time for as I recall Clough being impressed with his character during his rehabilitation.

Sheffield United is a business, however, and we have to make some hard-headed judgements without undue recourse to sentiment and so far the wages spent on both of these players have come at the opportunity cost of someone else who would be available for selection on a regular basis.

How much was the fee?

There injuries Wallace and Cuvellier have had aren't niggly injuries where their pulling a fast one by not playing. Both could have been career ending. I wish people would stop having cheap pops at players.

To think someone sat up writing a description of Cuveliier's last 28 months to prove a point is quite sad.

You could argue that we're all sad for contributing on a football forum. The post was very factual and perhaps tempers the excitement of Cuvelier participating in his second U21 game before Christmas.

It's not a cheap pop. Those are the facts.

And think what you like.

I have had a closer look at Cuvelier's United career. It is remarkable how little value we've had out of him.

2013-4 Season:

He signed on 2 September 2013, the last day of the transfer window that year.

He made his debut v Scunthorpe in the JPT, when we drew 0-0 and won on pens. He started and went off after 67 mins.

He then played 4 full league games in a row, on the next 4 Saturdays. We lost all 4 - 1-3 at Rotherham, 0-1 at Carlisle (he was terrible that day I recall), 0-1 at home to Preston and 0-2 at Wolves.

He got crocked against Crawley on 4 October, going off after 38 minutes.

He surfaced again on 26 October, coming on in the 89th minute of a 3-1 win over Crewe early in the Clough era.

Another late sub appearance followed on 29 December when we beat Tranmere 3-1. He came on after 83 minutes.

Clough then sent him to Port Vale. He lasted 36 mins for them on his 18 January debut before getting injured. That was it for the season.

2014-15 Season

His first appearance was as an 85th minute sub v Plymouth in the FA Cup on 6 December. He did lay on a goal for McNulty in the last minute, when we were 2-0 up.

He came on the following week at Fleetwood in the 79th minute as we drew 1-1.

He started the League Cup quarter final game against Southampton, playing well. He was subbed in the 73rd minute. This is the only game we've won in which he's played for more than 10 minutes.

There was another late sub appearance as we drew 1-1 at Walsall the following Saturday. He came on in the 84th minute.

Clough gave him a start at Port Vale on Boxing Day but he was sacrificed at half time after Basham got sent off and McCarthy was brought on. We played poorly and lost 2-1.

On loan at Burton, he came on in the 84th minute of their game at Hartlepool on 7 March this year. He managed to score the winner and injure himself, being subbed after 5 mins. That was his last competitive appearance.

2015-6 season

Half a season has gone, and Cuvelier has not played a single minute of first team football.

Not much for 28 months' wages, is it?

We should be able to sack fuckers like this at a drop of an hat. Im pretty sure using the anology of workplaces as some do on here 'how would you perform if booed' brigade! If I turned up to work 4 times all next year I'd be fucking ousted! This is a disgrace that this man has stole wages for the time he has along with Wallace. Jesus are we a resting home for fucked up footballers or what?

GET SHUT

If I knocked more than four times in the year I'd be gone

I might be wrong but I suspect that you don't need to have a level of fitness and strength of a professional sportsman in order to your job. Injured footballers are an inevitable fact of life for a club, always have been always will be, no-one here is really suggesting that the injuries and resulting unavailability are somehow deliberate are they?

We'd have him back in a flash. Mainly because we'd be able to get the best out of him, as we did last time.

And Terry Kennedy?....or does Bladey hypocrisy prevail as usual?....

This was one of the reasons why K Mac felt unable to persevere with Nigel Clough...

However...

James Wallace works extremely hard to get fit and stay fit. No-one is more frustrated than him that he keeps breaking down. Inflammatory remarks such as "fuckers like him" and "stealing wages" are inappropriate and, frankly, juvenile.

In the NFL when a player signs a contract for lets say $50m they are guaranteed lets say $20m.

So if the player gets injured in their first game and can never play again the club can pay them the $20m guarenteed, rather than letting the player earn the full $50m over 3/4 years.

I think something similar could easily be implemented over here.

I find it funny that people don't think a lot of wages are heavily performance based.

Do you mean in terms of appearance bonuses, goal bonuses etc?
Yeah. A lot of wages are based on those types of things, and then there are loyalty payments, promotion bonuses etc.

I would say the standard wage probably accounts for 70-80% of earnings. The weekly/monthly wage will be the largest proportion of their pay.

Saw that he has just signed with Morcambe. Another player who seems to be plagued with injuries, never played more than 23 matches in a season. Despite being two years older, he has only played half the number of league matches that Jack O'Connell has (100 to 204).

Because he's bobbar me old.

Part of the dark days in United's history.

They used to call Darren Anderton 'sicknote'. This fucker was far worse.

Good luck to Morecambe. He'll see out his retirement there. Obviously Walsall became pissed off with his lack of return for wage.

He played 19 games for us in just short of three years. Nineteen fucking games. If he was on an average of £1.5k per week, that's £234k during his time at BDTBL. £136.00 per minute. Ker-fucking-ching. Plus all the medical care. Robbing Belgian sod.

He didn't rob anything. He was offered a contract which he signed.

I get your point but it's a bit of a harsh comparison with JOC being a cyborg and all.
He gets injured less than Billy.

*edit* note to self. Don't put daft things like that 2 weeks before the derby.

Has been delivering pizzas since being released by Walsall to bring money in.

Desperately trying to come up with a pizza pun but failing so far....

On another note I seem to recall he had an insanely tidy missus

Thank God for that and the penny finally drops.

Wages have to come from somewhere....

It's only taken about two years of ding ding rows between us, but we might make a decent poster of you yet!
