We signed Hanson when we were top of the league. Contrary to popular belief, we were not struggling. We were taking a wee break from Tuftys tough regime !
We were the best team in the league at this point. By end April we were, by some distance, the best side.
Our promotion was highly probable in January and all but guaranteed 2 months later.
It's an utterly bizarre signing if it's believed Coop boy can influence positively our up coming campaign.
If he is moved on ahead of this window, unlikely now given injuries, than it changes from being bizarre to an error of judgement, quickly rectified.
UTB
We struggled to break down a 9 man Shrewsbury who parked the bus
We then struggled to break down a 9 man Bury who parked the bus
Fleetwood sat back and defended in numbers and we could have played them all night and not scored.
We tried playing through their defence but they wouldn't come out, so there was no space behind.
We had loads of corners and crosses against Fleetwood but they had 2 giant centre halfs that made mince meat of Sharp and Clarke.
We dominated against Fleetwood but they fully deserved their 2-0 win in the night.
At that point I realised if teams sit back restricting space then we would struggle.
For the last 5 minutes of games Wilder had this bizarre tactic of telling EEL to stand on the opposition centre spot and amazingly that added physicality up front was causing opposition teams to panic.
If we had Hanson playing up front against Fleetwood I've no doubts we'd have won.
As Brentford found out to their cost on Saturday, football isn't purely about ability.
If it was they'd have won, they gave us a culture shock because they had more technical ability than us
But we have other attributes that helped us win, like bottle, desire, character, more direct style.
Agree he's limited ability wise and not up to Championship standard but as I've already mentioned before it's like a good DIY man might keep a sledge hammer in his DIY toolbox. It's quite rare you'd ever want to use a sledge hammer for anything but when the opportunity arises it's such a fantastic tool to have. Hanson is that sledgehammer.
Ideally you'd want a sledgehammer (target man) type with more ability and I'm sure we'll get an upgrade at some point.
