CW's ability to 'reconnect the club' is gone. He was really quite clever in making it all about him in 2016, but it's never been just about him.
When he came in, in 2016, I wasn't disconnected, I was gutted, maybe a bit disillusioned still rocking up to watch us play, but absolutely NOT disconnected.
He and Knilly put that '16 team together. A team who ran themselves into the ground every game, attacked everybody and everything that dared to set foot in Bramall Lane, and got the results.
Then, he left and we still don't know the truth behind it. After all his positive talk and noise, particularly about 'not going out the back door', and then he did just that.
Last season, the atmosphere had gone, the football was functional, at best, and we saw the results of Wilder 2. I really can't understand why his teams aren't fit enough to cope with real challenges, with no real intent or bravery and zero ability to flex and change in game. We're entitled to ask what happened? Why the huge drop off in fitness and levels that were the hallmark of Wilder 1.0? The two aren't comparable, in any metric.
This season, more of the same, or worse. Selles is history. What we see now is who Wilder is now. This team reflect his ability and his personality, and neither are likeable or enjoyable. He's becoming a parody of the back street battler, the Sheffield bloke, proud of his roots and never backing down.
But, time waits for no man. It catches up with us all, and it's happened to him too.
He's trotting out the same, performative lines as he has before. 'It'll be better next season' and passive aggressive messaging about how tough pre season will be. No one, gets a contract extension anywhere else these days with 'I'm sorry, I know it's rubbish but I promise better in the next year boss'.
Personally, I don't believe it. Us older Blades don't have another year to simply cross our fingers, let him carry on with what he sees as 'his' job and just hope that he comes good. I know a few around football. Our ground was once seen as the mythical 'fortress' that everyone loves to bang on about, even Mourinho praised us.
Not any more.
Away fans are heading here to enjoy the day out, knowing that the Lane will be quiet and that they don't have to shut us up any more. They know that any pressure on us flattens us on the pitch and off it. We're seen as a team that falls over and that there's a good opportunity for easy goals and points.
It's not about being 'reconnected'. It is about simply wanting to look forward to kick off, to see a team that leaves everything on the pitch, that works for each other, that gets us into the ground and off our seats.
Our club once had a real personality. Now it's 'same old, same old'. Same lines in the pressers, same deflections, same behaviours.
Cheltenham got beat at Chesterfield yesterday. I was there. A decent game but two things stuck out. Chesterfield went in front and still went at it, hitting the woodwork three times but, at the end, Steve Cotterill and all his team went over to the 250 away fans and clapped them. Cotterill lead at the front , he didn't disappear. Selles also fronted up even though he knew he was getting battered. He took it with his team and had the bottle to do that. Cotterill and his fans are 'connected'.
Real leadership isn't proved in the good times, that's easy. True leadership traits and character comes out in the tough times. Can you lead from the front when it's messy and it's about to come 'on top'? I know what I'm seeing.
Enjoy your weekend folks. Whatever you're doing.
