The second goal v Burton showed the value of the Desso pitch. Duffy was able to play a perfect pass on the floor, trusting both the pace and the line, Brooks was able to allow the ball to run on without needing to control it himself, and then able to roll it in the bottom corner, without fear that it would not run true. A beautiful goal, great skill, and credit to those who invested in the playing surface which encourages such skills. That type of goal would probably not have been possible at Ipswich last week.

I agree, it doesn't get much credit but it's a big part of our success at home. I just love how The PP fibres are injected by computer-controlled machines, 18 cm deep and 2 cm above the surface, in a grid of +/- 2 x 2 cm.

I also enjoy how the natural grass roots entwine with the fibres and grow deeper and wider, building a stronger and healthier rootzone.

I am naive, but I don't see it as controversial any more. The only disadvantage I see is that perhaps it makes it difficult for us to play on some of the poorer pitches in this league.

I thought we over reacted to the poor pitch at Ipswich. Blackman went long from the start and Ipswich repeatedly took possession. Once he reverted to rolling the ball out things looked much better. Similar thing happened at Oldham last season as I recall.

Perhaps opinions are beginning to change. Not because of my persuasive oratory, but simply from the evidence of our own eyes; we are getting used to seeing the likes of Duffy and Brooks playing in a way that depends on a true surface. It should mean that in the next few years we develop/attract players with skills to play the ball on the floor; Pinchy's case for no more hoofball is thus all the stronger ( though I could still be persuaded that Plan B could include at least one attacker good in the air).

Part of me still misses this time of year when the bare parts of the pitch start to show. In my head the left touchline on the south stand side (so attacking Bramall Lane end) was always bare from Whitehouse running up and down it all year
