On balance, I'd take the two QF penalty wins over all the others, leading to SF disappointment :)

With the exception of Huddersfield last season, you'd have to say we've tended to win the more important shoot-outs.

I remember the days when it felt like we had a good penalty shoot out record, Blackburn, Coventry, Rushden & Diamonds....

Did we win or lose the shoot out at Grimsby on 9/11? I was there but can't remember.
We lost and I couldn't have cared less. It seemed wrong somehow going to that match with what was going on in NY.

I was there, that was a great night! I used to love Alan Kelly!
And I heard a lot of good things about this Diego kid last night, lets hope he will feature more in Danny's plans in weeks to come?
Fantastic night. On our way back to Harrogate via the A1, we stopped at the services for petrol and bumped into two Coventry City fans, who were very gracious and wished us luck in the semis.
As part of the goodies for signing up to Blades 2000, which got you 5 years ST for £800 I believe, we also got a signed framed picture of Alan Kelly making one of the saves. It's on the computer room wall behind me as I write!

Cracking evening. I went to Highfield Road for the first match, where we should have won won Kat somehow fluffed a golden opportunity in the dying seconds. Thought Coverntry did well at our place, that was until Holdsworth's scissor kick in the last minute or so!? Then Kelly outfoxed Deon Dublin. Dublin had already scored a pen in the fixture and he went the same way in the shootout. Kelly saved it of course. Coventry were a strong team back then and it was a big win for us. I can still remember Strachan being completely ungracious in defeat and moaning about this and that. Ginger tosser.

It was injury time if I remember correctly?

I was 10 years old and when it went in, my dad literally threw me about 8 feet in the air and I absolutely shit myself. It was amazing though, definitely one of my favourite moments watching United.

With that cup run in 1998 and such as the 02-03 season, I can't help but wish I was a few years older so I could really appreciate just how good it was!

Talk of Coventry being wound up due to owing 1.1 mil in rent. Hope they don't reinstate us LOL

The shoot out record (not including county cup)

19/10/91 ZDS Cup R2 H Notts Co D3-3 L1-2 on pens
16/3/93 FAC QF replay H Blackburn D2-2 W5-4 on pens
17/3/98 FAC QF replay H Coventry D1-1 W3-1 on pens
21/12/99 FAC R3 replay A Rushden D1-1 W6-5 on pens
11/9/01 LC R2 A Grimsby D3-3 L2-4 on pens
27/10/04 LC R3 H Watford D0-0 L2-4 on pens
19/2/05 FAC R4 replay H West Ham D1-1 W3-1 on pens
1/3/05 FAC R5 replay H Arsenal D0-0 L2-4 on pens
20/9/05 LC R2 A Shrewsbury D0-0 W4-3 on pens
9/8/11 LC R1 A Hartlepool D1-1 W5-4 on pens
8/11/11 JPT R3 H Bradford D1-1 L5-6 on pens
24/5/12 PO final Huddersfield L7-8 on pens
11/8/12 LC R1 H Burton D2-2 L4-5 on pens
4/12/12 JPT R3 A Coventry D1-1 L1-4 on pens

So I make that 6 wins and 8 defeats on pens.

What about the penalties defeat to Bristol Rovers in the 1970s? I think it was the Watneys Cup Final.

I could say, I don't include the Watney Cup, but the truth is I missed that one :-). So here it is:

5/8/72 WC final A Bristol R D0-0 L6-7 on pens.

So that takes our record to 6 wins and 9 defeats if the CC is no included and 8 wins and 10 defeats if it is (there are also a couple of tournmanents where we won games on pens - Algeria in 74 and Gibraltar in 76 if memory serves and we also won the one-off "Pennine Radio Cup" in a shoot out with Bradford in 1982 - if we include them we have 11 wins and 10 defeats).

I also have that large framed photograph which bears AK's signature but the its not very clear is it you have to know what it is to make an sense of it. Typical Blades using a crap photographer when they should have brought in David Bailey or Lichfield.
