Postpone, play behind closed doors or carry on?

We've been told on Twitter that if the Newcastle game is off, then we shouldn't travel with some implied accusation that we're selfishly endangering ourselves/others.

We are showing no symptoms, are not high risk and have to get public transport to work every day. Shopping centres are open, Cheltenham is still running, libraries are open, I haven't seen any gigs cancelled, cinemas are open, as are pubs and restaurants.

I fully understand if football is postponed for NHS and Police resources reasons as stated in Scotland, but to put your life completely on hold at this juncture is going against what the Government's Chief Scientific Advisor has said. If you want to put yourself on lockdown, knock yourself out.

If you've conducted a thorough risk assessment and in light of all the evidence come up with "fuck it", that's fine too.

just delay season for 4 weeks or so and rearrange Euro's for next year and we can enjoy the last day of the season in late June basking in the summer UK sunshine!

in the mean time i'm off to make my essential lunch of toilet roll topped with anti bac and dried pasta

Brilliant no one is allowed an opinion anymore.....
They are, just as I am allowed to call their opinion dumb and selfish. Don't see what the problem is with that?

When there's scientific evidence about how bad this GLOBAL pandamic is, it's just not debatable about how dumb it would be to let things go on as normal.

Italy is literally the blueprint for a lot of European countries, and numbers show that if we don't take VERY DRASTIC measures, we will be just like Italy in 2 weeks. Which means, 1000's of deads, not enough health care for all the sick peole and a mortality rate that only will go up.

I hate that there's no football, but come on this is about life and death. Literally.

But the Government is listening to scientific evidence that banning public events is of limited effectiveness.

As I've said above, other leisure pursuits are being allowed to continue in this country. So it isn't "dumb" to ask why football should be an exception.

Having an opinion isn’t a fact hence me saying I’d like to go to the football tomorrow

you calling me dumb and selfish is implying that as a fact - not an opinion.

It’s quite simply for me. Any tournament that is already running(PL/FA cup) etc.Finish off playing behind closed doors. Anything that hasn’t started yet (Euros) cancel it. But ensure every player and coach is tested before they play.

They are listening to the wrong "experts" in that case. Just listen to guys from actual institutes like Harvard, they are ALL saying how serious it is.

Just look at Italy. If we carry on, we're gonna be like that in 2 weeks. Why would you even take the risk? Better safe than sorry in this case. Although actual experts are already telling us that we SHOULD take measures.

Obviously, as long as your government is not prohibiting it, you're free to do what you want as you said. But I'm just as free to call it dumb and give my reasoning for that.

Edit: To be clear: I don't wanna insult anyone here, and it's more a "government fault" imo than people that just wanna go to the football. I'm just baffled to see how some people are not taking this situation as serious as it should be. (government).

Everyone would like to go to the football tomorrow. This poll is actually saying that IT should carry on. That's something different than "I would like to go."

And I'm just saying that carrying on would be super dumb and selfish. Not saying wanting to go the football is selfish.

But obviously people's opinions in this country have to be seen in the context of our Government's response of "business as usual". If people are still expected to go to work, travel on public transport and the advice is that public events should only be limited as a matter of resource management than limiting exposure then this will inform their opinion.

BBC reporting the Premier League will be suspended until April 4th

I don't reckon it implies a fact. It's only their opinion.

I was torn between the two extremes given that we can't outrun the pandemic.

A part of me was for hitting the 'carry on' button as I wanted to watch the football tomorrow, but then another part recognises that a lockdown is the only way to control the pace of the spread. Sure, it makes no sense to allow Cheltenham and shut down football, but it was always simply a case of this week or next and one life saved has to be the moral call (even if a part of me thinks the planet would be better off with 30% fewer inhabitants).

Me, I just got a new oven and am looking at 5 weeks off work. Time to come up with some home bakes.

Ah, West Ham and Villa are so predictable...

The Clubs need to take the advice of their medical staff as they seem not to have listened to what was being said yesterday by the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Scientist. Suspension will achieve nothing as the epidemic is not at its peak and will be worse in two weeks time. Yesterdays new advice that any sign of normal influenza requires a 7 day isolation period significantly increases the impact of Club staff being affected.

Its either plod on for a few weeks or cancel for the next 5 months.

Why are sky sports so far behind and not reporting this...

If I can’t go to the football tomorrow I’ll be damned if I’m off to work

Because it isn't confirmed yet.

The PL meeting is only just starting.

Can't believe 32,5% voted on carry on. That's just super dumb and selfish.

It's the current advice from the government's medical experts. They say that they'd rather hit a peak in the summer than the winter, and shutting everything down will just delay it.

In their opinion, shutting everything down will cause more deaths, not fewer. I wouldn't call that "super dumb and selfish."

You're right about that. Like I said, maybe I have to blame the government more and not the individual here. Not my smartest post, just a bit too emotional.

Here in The Netherlands, our government was very reluctant as well with measures. They just announced yesterday night (after a lot of pressure) that they are "encouraging" working home. My university just got shut down for 3 weeks, and they are now debating whether they should close schools for kids between 4-18 as well.

I think the situation in England is similar as it was with us a couple days ago, with a government that's just saying: Don't panic to much and try to stay in your normal life."

I am no expert about this case ofcourse, so can't discredit the guy you're quoting. It's just that the majority of the experts are actually saying otherwise. That's what worrying me.

Basically whole Europe shutted everyting down, with the Netherlands being one of the latest one yesterday. I think England will follow.
Obviously, I shouldn't have be that judgemental here, as your government apparently is not prohibiting it. So that's on me.

Oh my god, can we all chill until the actual announcement - I can’t cope !!
If none of us or Newcastle have symptoms then let’s play ball.....

You do realise you can have it for weeks till the symptoms start showing, anyone could be spreading it without knowing, it's just a game of football, currently it's irrelevant
