Master stroke, catastrophe, economically necessary or just inevitable?

So young Jordan has gone. How exactly do I feel about this? My feelings were mixed as the rumours started to fly yesterday afternoon. I am against losing young, Sheffield lads that have come through the system and have potential. But then again that million might mean we can keep the likes of Quinn and possibly bring in other loan players.

‘Raw’ talent

Slew is quick and there is pace is very difficult to deal with. He is also very young and has a promising start to his football career. He has come through the academy and is a Sheffielder. On paper we should absolutely not be letting him go. In fact when I read Sothall_blade’s first post my opinion swung over to against the deal temporarily. Have United not learnt from their mistakes with Naughton and Walker?? Or is this situation different?

Well Slew is certainly not in the same league as the two Kyle’s. He looked decent at the end of last season, but since then his form has been erratic. Other than looking fast, the rest of his game has huge question marks. His touch, finishing, anticipation and what he has done with the ball at his feet have not been impressive. Now, his form at the end of last season should not be ignored. He scored a few and looked shit hot. He has failed to impress so far, but with some decent coaching and a bit of time then perhaps he could be a world beater.

The deal

Will we look back and state that this was another disaster? If Slew starts ripping defences apart then will we be moaning that we sold another local world beater when we did not have to? Or will we be laughing that we got £1 million for Adrian Littlejohn mark II or Jonathon Forte the second? Difficult to tell really. And indeed time will tell.
But has Kevin Mac played a master stroke here? Has he essentially got another half a million by getting Slew to sign a new deal.

Those pesky agents

Most know that Slew’s agent is Mark Rankine and he was (apparently) problematic during the summer. How much of this could be down to him? It would certainly be more financially beneficial for Slew to move to a Premiership team. If Fulham wanted Slew, then Rankine might have been asking Slew ‘why are you playing in the 3rd division, when Premiership teams want to sign you’. As Wilson stated in his interview today ‘I wanted Jordan to stay …… but it is down to player and agent’. So if Slew had his heart set on leaving then perhaps McCabe was smart to get him to sign a contract and ensure an extra £500k for SUFC.

The likelihood is that his agent had been talking to the Premier League club for weeks. Had that been affecting his performance. And if we’d turned down the bid, would Slew have been happy? Would he have knuckled down and worked on his game.

How much value would we have got out of him?

I have heard some say that we should have given the young 18 year old a chance to blossom. However he was only on a 2 year deal, so how much value would we have got out of him. If he had a disappointing season, with a year left on his contract, how much would he be worth. On the other hand he might have ripped third division defences apart and tripled his value. It comes back to the Littlejohn/Forte vs Lennon/Walcott aspect again.

Like I said, I have mixed views on this. I see Sothall’s view, but I also understand why the club sold him. My main concern is that the team has lost its only pacey player. It is never good to lose a youngster, but Slew was on a short term contract and would we have got value out of him (i.e. were we better to cash in). I would like to have given him a season to see what he can do. Therefore I am slightly disappointed. However I will not lose any sleep. If this means we get to keep Quinn and strengthen in other areas, then so be it.
 
Top post Olle, sensible and well balanced and the best of several bad options for us but we have to accept that we are skint and that we need cash to fund the wages we are committed to.

Far better to keep Quinn than Slew
 
Now, I like to give Superblade a shoeing as much as the next man, probably more, but on this occasion my opinion is that keeping him in Summer was the right thing to do as it's given DW time to assess the squad. And if after half a dozen games he's decided he can afford to lose Slew then that's also good enough for me.
 
Mixed feelings but it is money in the bank. Was looking forward to watching him grow as a player for us, will now have to hope we see him again next season when he lines up against us.

the deal for mellis was UP TO £1.3m and as far as im aware united have recieved no where near the £1m upfront they will recieve for slew

I think we received at least £1M up front and will have received more by now but we'll have to agree to disagree.
Mellis was only 16, had never played in the first team and as a midfielder you would expect him to command a smaller fee than a striker.
To suggest that we've negotiated an exceptionally high fee for Slew isn't true IMHO.
 
I said before, 1million in the bank is next to useless in terms of the squad. We can only spend it on wages of loanees until jan and even in jan it's unlikely that we'll buy. So were a striker down now.

Slew was the only player with pace and whilst he only had potential, it's potential which could be realised and he could come good for us.

Like I said, we need to keep the young talent as long as we can, but on the other hand, the manager picks the team and selects his squad. If slew can be replaced with an expensive, ageing loanee for 3 months then hey let's get the loanee on the treatment table :)

Good luck to slew, but let's also hope the club know what they are doing for the sake of the team first and secondly for cutting the wage bill. Odd really as we gave him a pay rise in the summer, now we can't afford to turn bids down for him. Why not just sell him then if were so desperate? Clearly we haven't received bids anywhere else
 
Blackburn Manager Steve Kean has stated, "He will go into the elite development group that we have."
So no immediate first team action there for the lad. It's clear that Slew and Rankine have gone for the deal for "financial reasons" just as much as SUFC did - it's certainly not for footballing reasons since Blackburn are one of the favourites to go down so Slew could be a Champ player again (if he ever breaks into the first team).

It must be that Slew sees division 3 beneath him and feels that he should be on a large wad if he is a first team squad player as opposed to accepting that he is an up and coming youngster with a point to prove and doing his talking on the pitch.

Like others, I have seen promise in Slew but I have to concur that his attitude this season has been questionable. In the games I have seen I haven't seen this blistering pace that he is supposed to have, his control is suspect (the best strikers have a really good first touch - and this is not a factor of experience or coaching), his positional play is not great (something he can develop but only by playing first team games and learning from experienced pros) so he tends to react instead of reading the game and getting ahead of defenders in his mind first before his body reacts. He looks as though he has not been enjoying his football since he never smiles (maybe that's always been his way) and what's with the feckin' blue boots?

The lad could go on and have a good career but it looks very much a Littlejohn / Forte situation to me.

Good business at this stage, considering where we are and if it means we retain the best midfielder in the division (Quinn).
The new style of football we are playing means that midfielders will get more goals (since we are not just lumping it to an isolated forward who has no support)
Slew has not looked like bagging a hatful in any game I have seen so where is the real consequential loss?

Now the tranny window is shut until January, there will be plenty of Premiership forward players on the edge of squads that will not get a game unless they go out on loan.
This is the right way to use the loan system. Not for 66% of your back five for a full season.
I have faith that DW will get it sorted.

You could have refused it by saying "no", but I realise that those words aren't in the United board's vocabulary when pesky agents are in the room.

Im disapointed to see him leave, but from what i can see from DWs comments Slew/Rankine practically made the transfer go through by how they acted.
Plus he was only on a two year deal. SO there was no way he was commited to us in the summer.
On this occaision i cannot blame the club & its been a pretty shameful way for slew/rankine to have treated us after WE brought him through the ranks.

Good riddance slew & i hope your career goes no-were.

At least his fee will pay for our star player Ched Evans eh? :mad:

I dont think anyone is saying that Slew is rubbish. Perhaps you have convinced yourself that he's a world beater?

Transfers like this will always divide opinion but I genuinely believe we got a good deal here.

Having watched the lad, I think he has SOME potential. I dont see a superstar there, just my view.

By next summer we would have been in a similar situation with his contract and wouldnt be able to demand £1M.

The fact that he and his agent were determined to get a move away makes the argument a non-starter anyway.

As Danny said, when it gets to that situation you just have to get the best deal.
 
As the founder (and possibly only member) of the Adrian Littlejohn Appreciation Soceity, can I point out that he wasn't as bad as everyone seems to believe. He was a typical Bassett "picked off the scrapheap and turned into a reasonable top tier player" type. We picked him up from Walsall on a free in the summer of 1991 where he had only managed 1 goal in 40+ games in the 3rd division. So far so bad.

Yet in the first PL season in 92-93 he scored 8 goals and some of them were brilliant ones (see the away goals at Arsenal and Coventry). His partnership with Deane was what kept us up that season and with a total of 11 goals he remains our second top PL scorer after Deane.
 
Not seen anything in Slew in the 3 games I've seen this season that could justify us turning down £1M for him.

He is not a Rooney, nor a Ramsay, nor a Wilshire, nor a Cork, nor a Lennon, nor a Walcott, nor a Rodwell, etc. - not even as good as Connor Wickham

He has some pace but not enough to burn
He can finish but he is not ahead of his time (Ramsay and Rooney were playing first team football at a younger age).
He has much to learn and seems to believe he can do this in a development squad at Blackburn - a team on the decline.
He is not a team player - rarely, if ever, does he take players on and cross the ball for a fellow striker
The only determination he showed was to get himself a move to a prem club on a prem contract.

He showed some promise - but he wasn't the promised one.

I think most people accept that we can't afford the current wage bill so we had to lose someone. That given we can only sell someone we have a bid for and the only ones we had bids for were Boggy, Quinn and Slew. Boggy went, the Quinn offer was laughable (reported to be as low as £250,000 from Blackpool) leaving the Slew deal.

In the absence of losing a high wage earner then a large transfer fee was the best we could hope for and that's what we got. Yes we could have held out for more but with the clock ticking you're forced into a corner, but ultimately Slew wanted to go, Blackburn wanted to buy, we needed the money. Result being he went.

We could have said no but then where would the money come from for the player's wages? We're in this mess because we gambled on promotion and failed and since then there's been a recession so things are even worse.

I was just thinking the same and to be honest have been thinking it ever since the end of last season. Yes, I celebrated his goals like any other fan - but his name on a team sheet did not make me think we'd grab a goal or 2. £1m in the current climate can't be turned down. The comment from McCabe Jr was pretty blunt but I think reflects on the circumstances and disappointment in the player.

I'm hoping his open place within the squad means that Tonne and Philiskirk get their chance to get amongst the goals.
 
McCabe has overseen the club getting into the worst financial mess in its history. This is a fact though you can argue how much was down to bad luck and bad judgement.

It's also fair to say if he was head of a plc and didn't own all the shares he would have been scaked a long time ago on his results on and off the field.

The link to Slew - whether he is right or wrong McCabe is intent on getting the club to pay majority of the debts back to him.

Whether you think Slew was a potential world beater or just another Ched the idea that selling him for a million somehow gives United a million is fallacy.

The financial blackhole McCabe wants us to fill won't even notice a million being sucked in.

I've only seen Slew a handful of times but I actually think £1m a good price.

But my point is don't get carried away thinking that's the end of our problems. Quinn and the rest will go on loan/be sold if and when we get decent offers.

For example all we've done by selling Slew is cover Ched's wages from the end of last season to next summer's transfer window which may be our next chance to get rid of him.

Truth is, had we stayed in the Premier League or got promoted back to it then the silly wages wouldn't have been a problem. Like many clubs we gambled and failed and McCabe isn't prepared to do that again. We need a foolish billionaire to that's always been a lifelong Blades fan to come in and turn us into a massive clubs like our friends across the city. Okay maybe not that last bit.

The thing is, to all intents and purposes, McCabe is United and United is McCabe so any money that comes in goes to McCabe in one way or another. The only issue is how far McCabe is willing to expend his wealth on expensive footballers rather than expensive yachts, racehorses, diamonds etc.

I liked him as well. Remember well his goal at Chelsea where he raced onto Glyn Hodges through ball, outpaced Frank Sinclair and finished well.
 



It's true that United could easily have told Slew's agent and Blackburn to do one, but it's also true that Slew could have told them the same. He could have chosen to ignore his agent and tell United that he'd rather stay. It would appear that he didn't. Good look to him in Blackburn's "elite development group". Presumably this is a different kind of development that saw the fantastic Jacob Mellis on loan at Southampton and Barnsley? Will Jordan be working in Venky's Elite Plucking Department? Perhaps he might be Chief Chicken Shit Shoveller in a few years.
