What goes around.....might be a yoot ting, but Is it any different than the rest of society embracing and copying American culture with an insatiable appetite? Check the film and TV threads and see how much is British!

No different elsewhere either, visited the Caribbean lately? Cricket pitches concreted over and made into basketball courts by the dozen. Not long ago most kids there wanted to be the next Michael Holding, now they all want to be the next Michael Jordan

Let's hope that none of the kids want to be the next Michael Doyle. God help em. x

But you missed the point. I was originally replying to a derogatory comment about a white mate of Johns' sounding black. No different to plenty culturally eschewing British for American in my eyes so leave the youth alone was my point. I was using TV as an example could easily have used food instead!

What was post 17 all about then, was that your equally 'derogartary' contribution SEB. Strikes me you've got more faces than Mount Rushmore !

For the record, I think someone from Shrewsbury who talks like they are from Jamaica is a sad act, in much the same way as someone who goes to Birmingham Uni for a term and comes home talking like fucking Jasper Carrot is.

If that's ok with you of course?

American programmes are all over British television like you get flies on dog shit, because we now as a generation have 900+ plus channels of brain rotting television, and because we can't possibly fill all 900+ channels with any form of quality television most of it is imported crap.

I enjoy well made British television and films over what is imported. This is England 86 and 88 were two seriously good quality, thought provoking programmes, and going back further I really enjoy stuff like Boys from the Blackstuff, Auf Weidersehen Pet, Our Friends In The North, Shameless when it was good and plenty of stuff like that. Comedy we have the world The Inbetweeners. Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, League Of Gentleman, The Fast Show and The Office.

Right. And how much of that list is actually being made NOW?

It's ok with me for people to do what they want, which was my original point. However criticising Jamaica-speak (which would be more likely if you went to Brum than Carrot) which is an ingrained part of youth culture now, is a bit hypocritical if you're in an Indian restaurant having just left a cinema in which you watched the latest blockbuster in which America saved the world!

But I'm not in an Indian restaurant having just left the Cinema, I'm at home............???

It is not ingrained part of youth culture, at least not beyond the would be gangsters stood skinning up on street corners. There are plenty of 'youths' on this forum but I'm yet to see a post written in 'Jafakeian'. I think youll find, most young people are proud of their own culture and identity and consequently not inclined to speak in a dialect from another continent and to suggest otherwise does them a great disservice

You neglected to explain post 17, by the way?

Must be a London thing then, because nearly all the kids speak with a half jamaican, half sarf london accent whatever their background.

Post 17 was a humourous way of pointing out that Mason was speaking on twitter using street-speak rather than trying speak Jamaican, which if he was he failed miserably!

And my OP was intended in a humourous way, to show that in doing so, Mason induced the perception that he was a bell end.

Don't know,? was watching an episode of friends for the 300,000 time and thought I would catch up on the events at the lane.

I could never understand the popularity of 'Friends'.

The pattern was always the same:

Character A enters the room, strikes a pose and delivers a line. Canned applause.
Character B strikes a pose and delivers a line. More canned applause.
Continue ad infinitum...

I much preferred Cheers or Frasier.

Fair enough, my OP was sticking up for the lad a bit saying that he's no different to the rest of us who all absorb other cultures in some way or another whether TV, film, food, clothing or speech.

FWIW, I personally think it's pretty sad that people are so insecure that they can't be comfortable with their own identity whilst respecting the differences in others, rather than imitate them in an attempt to fit in. I'm surrounded by people from the Caribbean, professionally and personally, I've never lost my Sheffield accent nor tried to adopt theirs. The food however..............;)

Like I say we havent produced anything of note for decades

I was going to move the TV and culture debate into an off-topic thread, but quite frankly, I've no idea where to bloody start and it looks like a world of post edits/splitting!

So instead, I'll respectfully ask that we get back on topic and take any non-Jasper Johns football related discussion to general chat :)

Is Jasper Johns (who is totally awesome) into US TV shows, and are any of them about Soccer?

:)

UTB

If DW has gone back to his old club and nicked a youngster, its because he has a lot of confidence that he can bring the lad on.

May not be a world beater, but good for us.

Don't give a stuff about US drama/films/chatshows/sitcom/realityshows/etc.etc.etc.etc.

A.C.Milan had Leonardo, we just got Jasper Johns but he'll do (geddit?)
