Competition - Total league goals and who scores them?

Thought we could have a competition on here:

How many league goals will we score this season and who will score them?

Last season we managed 64 goals, scored by:

Competition rules:

Not sure, how about:

Prediction: X
Actual goals scored: Y

Difference between X and Y gives 0 or a negative score.

Then 1 point for every player predicted with the correct number of goals.

Highest sum wins. No prizes!​

(Any flaws with this? I'm open for better suggestions)


New signings (August or January) can be added to the list when they sign (but before they play), but won't affect the total number prediction.
Players sold is unfortunate. (What to do with Adams!)
Right number of own goals gives a point.
Predicting players scoring 0 goals doesn't give any points.


If this isn't just stupid (not quite sure myself!), make your predictions before we kick off at Bolton, please.

If it was (+) 40, player points would be subtracted from that and lowest sum would win. Yes, it would be the same I guess.

Wouldn't it be more difficult (and a test of skill and knowledge) if instead of just the overall goal difference we did it on a player by player basis. Eg if I predict Ché will score 15 and he gets 3 then leaves I would be -12 then cumulate the players score. Ditto if he stayed and scored 21 I would score -6 (any deviation from the prediction being a negative). winner would be the person with the lowest minus score.
Incoming players would be predicted before the next home game or attract -10 penalty for a late prediction

I'll go for a season total of 78.

Add a few own goals and new signings' contributions, and it should be knocking on towards 80.

It's hard not to see us scoring plenty of goals this season, especially if Wilder finds the correct balance.

We could make the total a bonus. If a predictors cumulative score is -12 and his totals are predicted 83 actual 69 = -14 that is added to the afore mentioned cumulative -12 giving a final score of -26

The objective remains to get as close to zero as possible.

How do we implement them into Blade56 's system though?

Maybe just separate total goals and goals scored by players. If it has to be a competition then combine points from total team goals and player goals to determine the winner. For example someone might be 8 goals out with the team goals, so -8 points, and 30 out with player goals, so -30. -38 altogether. Whoever's minus the least wins.

As for players leaving/arriving in January etc, that should just be part of the predictions, otherwise there'll be too many rules and conditions.

If there's loads of predictions on this, it could be a useful (but incredibly simplistic) 'wisdom of crowds' type guide to what price each player should be on the anytime goalscorer betting market.

e.g. if 100 predictions give Billy Sharp an average of 23 goals, you could say he should be Even money to score at anytime. Basham is usually around 11/1 to score so, if that was the correct price, you'd expect him to get an average of 4 a season - wonder how many people will predict that he gets that many?

Loads of things it won't take into account (opposition, venue etc) but I'll find it interesting at least.
