Compared with last season...

The league seems to have split into 4

3 chasing the autos

6 fighting it out to stay up

Season over for QPR and Stoke

12 teams still in with a chance of the final 3 play off berths with 9-11 games left.

3 points for a win, the play-offs and a strange mix of ability and inconsistency makes this the most fascinating league in Europe and a bookies wet dream.

Great stuff. I really hope this isn't one of those seasons where we need 90 points to be top 2, the football gods might have been brewing this one for a while.

Keep the faith, Derek! In the 1989-90 season, we'd just lost 0-4 at Leeds with only four games of the season left and we thought that was it. Next up, a home game with Port Vale, 0-1 down until we got a winner in the last minute. The fan in this vid. says 'I thought I'd faint' and that's exactly what I said to my dad when I got home.

The similarities are astonishing - fans moaning about the chairman, the kop singing 'We're on the march with Bassett's/Wilder's army', another blip with a 0-0 draw at Blackburn before we reached the sunny uplands at Leicester on 5th May (fancy being away on the last day of a promotion-winning season on 5th May...)

Words fail me with the character of that team last night:

We're gonna need a bigger graph! :D

Comparison with our most recent 3rd placed finishes. I've added 11/12 in there as well as we got 90 points that season - would that be enough this year??? We won the next 6 that season - do that again and we'll almost certainly go up...

I'll post the multi-coloured table tomorrow after tonight's fixtures.

They sure were - 9 points from the last eight games.

(Not sure about your red line. Last season, we won game 42 - Middlesbrough at home). The last eight games last season were: D, D, L, W, D, L, L, W.

bear in mind my red line is not the final 8 games but the results against the teams we have to play

Bristol City (H) - 10 man defeat
PNE (A) - defeat - curruthers, lundstram and lafferty in midfield
Brum (A) - defeat - Donaldson proving he wasn't good enough
Millwall (h) - draw - shocking late concede
Forest (H) - draw - can't remember this game
Hull (a) - defeat - shocker performance
Ipswich (H) - win - comfortable win in the autumn
stoke / Cardiff (A) - defeat - early defeat

The Forest game was in the snow. Probably one we should have lost if I remember correctly but got away with a draw. (As opposed to dominating but ending up with a draw).

At best, I suspect that a 2 points a game average over the last 8 games would be sufficient for us to go up in 2nd. At worst we’ve just got to match Leeds’ results from here on in. I don’t see WBA overcoming a 7 point and 7 goal defecit in the run in. It’s not impossible, but it’s improbable.

Leeds, at worst, would then need to get 17 points from the 24 available, as well as making up a goal on us in each game. Not impossible, but improbable.

Things worth noting:
  • Leeds still have an easier run in than us (at the moment) - but they won`t after the next round of matches
  • Whilst realistically we are already in the PO, we need a points swing of 10 to be sure
  • After the next round of matches, Boro actually have an OK run-in so may be able to stay in and around the PO
  • Ipswich are almost certainly down, as are Bolton
  • A 12 point deduction for Birmingham (as reported today) would place them in the shit - and bugger up my excel...
  • Wednesday have the hardest run-in from here of all sides (on a Ppg basis)

Things worth noting:
  • We have the easier run-in compared to Leeds and WBA
  • Wigan, with 4/7 away from home (inc the next 2) could easily be dragged back into the relegation scrap
  • The points deduction has buggered up my form measures - I'll fix that for next week
  • Wednesday have the hardest run-in from here of all sides (on a Ppg basis)

As an addendum to the above - which shows Ppg run-in based on Season form, the below shows it based on current, Last 8, form.

  • The above doesn`t account for H/A form - just the last 8 games
  • We still have a nominally easier run in than Leeds
  • Derby, despite having a harder run-in on Season form, actually have the easiest run in based on recent form

Points of interest:
  • Derby still have a relatively easy run in based on the current form of their opponants, I wouldn't rule them out of PO contention at all
  • Defeat for Wednesday shows the damage 1 bad result can have at this stage of the season (They'd be 8th! if they had won) - as much as we might like to think they will have something to play for on Saturday its unlikely they will
  • Wigan still look in a perilous position - especially hen you consider the current form of their remaining opponents
  • Season wise, Leeds run in doesn`t look that different from ours (1.15 vs 1.18 ppg) but when you look at the form in the last 8 there is a lot of difference (1.25 vs 1.48) - as evidenced by this graph:

And here's the comparative graph against prior promotion challenging seasons:

to be fair if owls were 11 points off the play offs with only 4 to play some of their fans would think it was highly possible the other 36 results would all go their way

Five cup finals to come. Bit disappointing last night, four points out of Preston and Birmingham away ain't bad but we need to hit our stride from now on.

Back down to third. It's a real shame that there's only one auto place up for grabs.

upload_2019-4-11_6-9-42.png

No point with 'Mind The Gap'. Even The Mighty Owls - up to the dizzying heights of tenth place and 19 points behind us - can't catch us, despite the best efforts of that RS plank on Football Heaven.

It's between us and Leeds for the last auto place. Norwich have been superb from 14 games from the 'finishing line'.
