Colours & colour blindness

As I am colour blind I get sent these links by people who know me pretty regularly.

Firstly, they cannot “correct” colour blindness - that just isn’t possible. They claim to increase contrast, which is nice, but not remotely the same thing.

The test on their website to see if they will work for you is appalling and invariably “inconclusive”. Actual real reviews I have read/heard rather than internet miracle videos with people crying state that they are crap. There is also a no returns policy - so you can’t try them out.

If it looks like bullshit and smells like bullshit, then it’s probably bullshit.

And in day to day life it doesn’t have to be and shouldn’t be a problem.

In Iraq we had a swipe card system, which we used during evacuation drills. There is a single led light and it flashes orange whilst it’s waiting for a swipe card to be presented. Then Changes to Red or Green depending on whether the swipe is accepted. Several colour blind people in camp had the same issue as me. It looked the same whether it was orange, red or green. A simple solution would be red/ blue or a sequence of leds

traffic lights are a perfect example of how the system can work, because it’s sequenced. I know at every traffic light in the world red is at the top, green bottom.

I’ve known all my life I could never be a pilot or an electrician although modern wiring has removed the red green brown issues.

I'm red green colour blind too did not have an issue shades were completely different and we changed our shorts that helps

Oh reyt, i knew nowt about them tbh. Its a shame that team colours arent given any consideration for broadcast, i guess its a kind of disability. surely there should be some rules on this moving forward as alot of people must have this issue. All teams have 3 kits now so there is a choice and could be done, i never thought about this subject but i can imagine its quite frustrating and would spoil the enjoyment of a game.

Kit colour clash nightmare AGAIN today.

Against Derby - who play in white - we played in pale pink and caused a kit clash.

Against Southampton - who play in red - we are playing in green and have caused a kit clash.

We could have just swapped kits both times and there wouldn’t have been a problem. When 8% of people have some sort of colour issues I do not know why we wouldn’t do this.

I paid for a Now TV day pass and it’s a total waste of money. I am going to watch the F1 instead.

It’s shocking isn’t it! It’s that wide shot where it all just looks a mess to me. Don’t think the Saints black shorts are helping either

For the vast majority of people (and all of the players on the pitch) red vs pink looks far worse than red vs green. If you’re in the very tiny minority, sit down, shut up and deal with it.

Didn’t everyone complain after the Derby game though? The pink kit is very pale pink and can’t clash against white AND red surely?

It's not that hard, mate.

United are the ones without the ball.

It's not a kit clash though.

The vast majority of people aren't colourblind.
The pink kit wouldn’t clash for anyone though - so surely that is a better solution?

Clearly 8% of people is a minority - but it is still a LOT of people.

Half the point here though is better planning of new kits for future seasons.

Red v Pink isn't a kit clash but Red v Green is?

Okay.

Red/Pink is worse for 92% of people. Red/Green is worse for 8%. That’s all there is to it.

Genuine question - is that remotely difficult for non colour blind people to tell apart?

And again... the issue is as much to do with choosing the kits before the season as a set rather than just today.

Not quite. Surely if there is a 100% solution that is better than a 92% solution?
Given some of the comments on here, it’s clearly a disability that doesn’t matter.

Reality is that clubs, the Premier League and the TV stations could all do something about it, but they don’t.

Here is the club’s response to my question on the bad combination of colours across our three kits...

“With regards to the choice of the kits for the 20/21 season, upon the designs being produced by Adidas, these are then sent to the Premier League who will provide approval on the design. Upon receiving approval from the Premier League, the kit is then produced and worn as required throughout the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, at the time of design and approval, concerns regarding the colour of the kits were not raised by the Premier League. As noted, where Clubs come to have kits which are similar (such as both teams sporting red and white stripes), then an alternate kit must be selected.

We are now aware of the difficulties that may be experienced from certain colour combinations, and having received such feedback will ensure that this is reflected upon ahead of the kit selection for 21/22 season.”

That’s good to read. I could barely watch the Southampton match and not just for performance reasons!

Some fantastic ignorance displayed in this thread though.

Two mind numbingly shite strips. If the kits were better and hadn't been designed by David Blunket's guide dog, we wouldn't need to be having this discussion.

I know it’s a different topic, but one thing that’s baffled me:

In 2018/19, we went to the trouble of “putting paper on the walls” of the pink dressing room at Carrow Road, because scientific evidence suggests that the colour pink reduces testosterone and worsens sporting performance. Two years later, we’re choosing a pink kit to wear. I have no idea if it’s true, but CW and AK seemed to think so two years ago, so why go for pink now?

That’s very easy to say when you’re in the majority though isn’t it?

You presumably have no issue watching the game, so telling people who do have a colourblindness problem to shut up and deal with it is rather ignorant wouldn’t you say?

How about I stand in front of your tv for the Brighton game and see if you complain about not being able to see?

I think it’s incredibly poor that the club, Adidas and the premier league have ratified kits that prevent 8% of our fans from being able to properly watch us play.

This is coming from somebody who has no sight problems whatsoever, but a bit of empathy for those that do.

I was surprised to see us line up in the pink kit at Old Trafford and expected to see us in green......could the choice have been made by the players, they actually prefer the pink kit or could it have been a bit of tactical genius in that it made the Manure players have to think for a split second longer and not be able to pick an instant pass? there could be something in that second point as there were a few wayward Manure balls and they certainly didn't have their usual zip....

Either way we have to wear the pink v City.......never change a winning kit!!

Dark green vs dark red would probably cause more issues than light pink vs dark red.

Really....? We wore the green at Liverpool, Arsenal & Southampton.....my eyes must be different to yours, pink is a lot closer to red than green....
