There are a few players who were playing 20% short of what they they are capable of, at least. Scougall, Coutts and Brayford spring out. If Wilder can enthuse these 3 then we are already better than last year. It's ok for everyone to say ditch the lot but the pigs are an example of players locking into the manager and achieving more than expected.

A few said the same last season and the same players that let Clough down, let Adkins down too. The pigs are a fine example of real game changing investment. They have signed players like McGeady, Hooper, Wallace, Matias, Bannan etc. They won't have come cheap. If Wilder is allowed that sort of relative investment, he won't be sticking with losers like Scougall.

As much as it hurts most of us to agree, that is a true statement and is the reason why they are now on the edge of going to the promised land (and will do it in my opinion). The thought of the filth going from floundering in 17th place under Stuart Gray, to getting in the new owner, new (unknown) manager, a bunch of players, many of whom were unknown to most of us, and suddenly rocketing up the league, walking through the play offs to Wembley is frankly unbearable.

Now that is "game changing investment".

What is TT score?

How come Hiddink and Wassall get so far up the league but with half as many points? Explanation?
Have a read of the points system at the bottom.

Know what, the more I hear what comes out of Wilder's mouth, the more certain I am this is a very very good appointment.

I wonder how the midweek outfit are getting around the FFP rules..I can see a jammy win and promotion and a Bournemouth style slap on the wrist fine...weren't they losing 6 million a season upto Chancer taking over...anyway,Come on Hull!

That video is absolutely fantastic - call it as you see it, CW. Don't hold back - he's stepped in and thought, I'm going to speak for the fans and I don't care if it's my job on the line.

Could do with the same transparency at the Lane, exciting.

The "game changing" investment won't happen here until we get out of this pub league.

Coutts has been dogshit ever since he came here, under either manager.

He was less dogshit under Adkins than Clough, yet dogshit none the less.

He's Baxter, with the same complete lack of body or fitness for the modern game, minus the goals and long range passing, plus some neat and tidy link up play.

Get rid Chris, please.

The thing is, maybe it's the culture of the club and not all the players. By the time we have finished this summer over 20 players could be gone. Some of them if not a lot were considered good players for this divison. Now both clough and Adkins have let players like coutts take their shirt when fit even when not performing. Chris won't tolerate that and won't have any favourites apart from the ones who put it in for him.

Don't get me wrong I don't like coutts as much as the next man but he has the talent. What if this new culture brings the best out of him. Preston certainly did when he was with them, also players like Gallagher who was also meh with us for a short period.

You may be right. But I don't think so.

The footballing world isn't full of mugs. If there was hidden talent that was being managed, someone out there would spot it.

Mark my words, if we release Paul Coutts, as with every other signing Clough made, it will be downhill from here.

So why would you want to retain players that only give 100% when they feel like it and are so precious they perform only if people are really really nice to them and stroke their vanity? If they weren't giving 100% these are players who got the last two managers the push and left us in this shit division. If that is the case I wouldn't want them near the club.

Coutts wasn't a crock when he was at Preston. He is now. He's fit as he is going to get and if he isn't its because he doesn't want to be. Show pony who has managed only 6 league goals since signing for Peterborough in 2008 in over 240 League appearances. His assists record isn't much better. Are we to believe he is going to magically change because Wilder glares at him?

Very board on a night shift so thought say hi! See how our old managers settling in! See after bad start your climbing table. Leagues anyones at the min, Scunny look the team to beat though.
So fill me in then, thoughts so far.
Ps (in all good humor) glad Revell came to us, mans a monster.

Must say if both clubs are still top 6 by the time we play on Dec 31st. It will one he'll of a crowd. . . .24k +

After a bad start where it didn't look as though the players knew how they were supposed to be playing, there's been a vast improvement. I was concerned about the type of football we seemed to be playing in the home games v Rochdale and Southend, the only tactic appeared to be hoof it up to Clarke and it wasn't working. However, slowly and surely, we're playing better football, still quite direct but more emphasis on passing rather than hit and hope. I think we're still very much a work in progress, he's corrected defensive problems and he's signed a good keeper in Moore but I still think we're light in midfield, despite the resurgence of Coutts. Up front, Done and Sharp work very hard and although Sharp has 5 goals to his name, he still looks a bit subdued. Whether this is because of the responsibility of captaincy or adapting to the style of play, I don't know, but I think most blades are not worried and think he will still be amongst the top scorers in this division. It will be interesting to see what part Clarke and Lavery play as the season progresses.

I'm sure most blades fans are very pleased in the change in overall attitude which has been demonstrated in a good habit of getting late goals, notably a last minute winner at Gillingham, a last minute equaliser at Fleetwood and even more impressive, a late equaliser at Scunthorpe despite being down to 10 men.

It all bodes well, but we're not getting carried away and I think most would be pleased with a top 6 finish. If Wilder managed to get us promoted via the play-offs, we'd have to put up a statue at Bramall Lane in his honour! (research our play-off record)

I stand by almost everything written there - at that time it was wholly true - other than the "get rid" bit, which now looks like would have been a mistake. "An expensive pile of dogshit" would be an extremely accurate description of the previous 20 months.

As pointed out several times already, I'm happy that he's proving me wrong in that he can be a good footballer going forward.

Well I cant see that happening. The blue print to beat us is simply go on front foot, play high tempo. Very undecided on Page, if hes going to work out. Made some great signings though, Taylor, Revell, Zukani.
This league is so open at the minute, anyone can beat anyone. Your result against Scunny is a typical example of what Wilder expects and will get from his teams. Still think youll be top 2

What would you consider 'working out'? Seeing Wilder close up it's clear he's got something about him and often when a team loses a manager as good as him they struggle. You seem to have done quite well so far under Page so what are your concerns?

Thanks for the info.

It's hard to predict how it will turn out, there are major problems here at board level the manager has no control over.

I expect to see us a more passionate and committed outfit next season, whether we will have enough quality to get up is another matter.

The major problem is that the board are setting a realistic budget and sticking to it.
Where as our fans would rather we be held to ransom, meet demands and pay all our players £10K plus.
We already have the biggest budget in league 1 but that's not enough because many think we need to gamble and spend Championship level salaries.

It seems many fans want their clubs to over spend and drive up transfer fees and wages.
I believe prices and salaries are already too high and clubs need to ignore fans requests and say NO.

It's all been typical bipolar Blades so far. Most of us despairing early on, especially with the complete and total mess on display at home to Southend. Now in the league we're looking like a side not quite complete but with plenty of reasons for optimism. The style of football is approaching the balance that will keep our fans happy; battling off the ball and, in possession, direct without hoofing it. I think the only hesitation is how many times we've been here before. So many false dawns it's hard to believe based on the small sample so far that real change is happening. If he shows us over the rest of the season that this is how we want to play, I think most will back him come what may.

Noticed my earlier post above was in reply to a very old post
Didn't notice the date so tried to delete it but it wouldn't allow it

Cobbler,

You prediction was accurate and everything is going well so far.

In the last few weeks every performance has been a 7 out of 10.
So there's definitely room for improvement and we haven't started firing yet

But the great news for me is that finally we look solid and consistently play as a team giving full effort. The new goalie and new defensive unit looks to be the best we've had since being down here.

I'm very confident we'lll improve and we'll be able to grind out plenty of wins and draws.
The forward line and goal scoring seems to be our problem area.
We're creating chances but Sharp and Done aren't in form.
However the good news is that we have plenty of cover and options with a fairly strong squad.

Dear Cobbler

Thanks for asking about us. I think it's great that your team are also doing well. It's a big step up from L2 to L1 and you're more than holding your own. How much of that is down to the foundation Wilder laid and how much down to another ex Blade, Robert Page, I don't know but you must owe us all a pint surely?

I once went to your ground. "Sexfields" they call it don't they? It only had 3 sides so I loved it instantly as ours used to be the same when I first started watching dem Blades. It's tough playing on a triangular pitch though so I hope you move to a rectangle soon, if you haven't already done so?

I think you should ignore our brief winless run at the start of this season. There was never a problem- although some on here would have you believe different. I think we were excellent in the opening game at Bolton, ridiculously unlucky in the two that followed and literally beat ourselves through stupid errors in the other. That's not a crisis - it's just football - but for some fans it was a disaster. We had some dickheads saying the job was "too big" for Wilder after just 2 games FFS! I'm sure you've got your fair share of morons too so you'll know what I mean.

Facts are Wilder is a very good manager. He's turned the squad over with a pitchfork and has got players here who feel they are lucky to be here and want to give everything for the shirt. Totally different approach to recruitment to his tosspot predecessor.

Not only that, but there's no favourites. Play bad and you're off the pitch, or dropped. And he's a totally straight talker which we love and expect. It's part of the culture here in Sheffield.

We lack a bit of bite in midfield and pace up top - but I've seen enough personally to convince me already that we have got the right man in the right job -AT LAST! And the Blades are going up!

Possibly. Maybe, not that we want to shout about it because its all gone tits up before, but some of us are quietly confident although waiting for a disaster to happen. Anyway, nice to hear from you, pop back in March and have a chat when we are fighting relegation/ cock a hoop with promotion/ sacking Wilder/ burning Pinchy as a Witch.

I know what you mean.

We seem to have a knack of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. But we've tried almost every managerial permutation possible - and I think this bloke gives us the best chance for years.

I also liked Danny Wilson btw. Even though he had a tattoo of a knob put on his Owl - cruel barsted!
