Brayford was a very good signing, although we did over pay for him by about 500k.

What went wrong with Brayford is pretty simple and that was Clough using him a centre half rather than actually bringing in a centre half. Sadly the injury he got while playing centre half has left him not quite the same player he was which is sods law with us.

When he was re signed and did play right back I don't recall him been quite the same player and is it another case of the Phil Starbucks! Great on loan and then average when permanently signed.

I think while he improved us it wasn't to the extent we expected – perhaps we expected too much at the time. My original thought was his return was a bit like when Harley joined us permanently.

I thought he was decent right up until he got injured against Swindon in the play-offs.

The only time we have really gone out of our way to sign someone better than what we have got while in this league but sadly overpaid for him.

Halifax fan in peace. Thought I would post a little more on Wilder as I have followed his career after he left the Shay. I can understand the sense of underwhelm you are feeling. Most fans of a club your size would probably be hoping for an ex Premier League or good Championship manager, so completely get the feeling of being a but short changed.

What I will say though is, Wilder is an excellent manager. Did very well at Alfreton, at the Shay he was severely hindered by our financial situation but still did a cracking job overall taking us to within 10 or so minutes of a return to the League against all the odds. At Oxford he turned around their fortunes in his first season going on a run that took them to an almost impossible run towards the play-offs which was only hindered by a 5 point deduction. The following season got them out of the division. Admittedly perhaps could have done a little better with Oxford in his couple of seasons in League 2, but he left them in a very stable position and in pole position to win promotion in that season. Does not need mentioning the job he has done at Northampton!!!

The big plus in my opinion is that Wilder seems to have finally found a really good assistant in Alan Knill. In some ways they remind me of Warnock and Jones. Knill is a very good football coach and an underrated Manager himself, who has had impossible jobs in management. Led what many believe to be the best League 2 footballing sides in recent times Bury to the brink of promotion before leaving. It seems that together they work very well, and complement each other perfectly. Wilder appears to have changed a little, with better football now Knill is part of the team. Some management duo's just work, and the evidence since they teamed up together suggests they are one of those. Wilder actually assisted Knill the season that Bury did win promotion from League 2 (although Barker finished the job off as Knill had left for Scun*horpe and Wilder left for Oxford). At Northampton they identified all that was wrong immediately and the turn around there was quite amazing.

Of course nothing is guaranteed in football, but together you have a cracking management team in place. I went on the Northampton board when Wilder was appointed to say what a good manager they had, I hope you guys are just as successful as both Wilder and Knill (both ex Halifax players too) deserve it!!

Thanks for going to the trouble of creating an account to post your positive comments.

I was a little underwhelmed in the appointment but thought that something had to change regarding Adkins.

I'm not sure that I would go to the trouble of posting comments on other teams forums to reassure fans but I appreciate you going to the trouble of doing it for us.

Let's hope when Wilder and Knill have completed their terms at Bramall Lane we will have such positive feelings towards them.

Wilder and knill have been a very big part of N.T.F.C. season. What we have achieved is phenomenal this season,i wish them all the best for next season and will stand up and applaud them home or away.N.T.F.C. was dead until this man walked through the door,he got Kelvin Thomas on board, and brought the fun back watching the cobblers 'playing' football. You not only have a brill manger but a very good assistant manager in Knill.N.T.F.C couldn't top what happened last season until we can sort our Stadium out and get more punters through the door.Just hope we can stay in league one until that day. New song coming on!:)

I miss Chris Wilder already. He's going to get a thunderous reception both at Sixfields, and from our travelling support at the Lane. I'm lumping on you lot for promotion.

Steady mi owd spadge! If you'd seen us play recently you'd put your wallet back and step away from the bookmaker.... :)

With your budget and platform there is no way I can’t seem him taking you up.

Someone has said this I think every summer since we’ve been down here. I hope CW will finally be the man to pull us out of the doldrums but I feel there is so much wrong with this club from the top down that it will take more than one man to fix it.

Thanks for posting your views though. Appreciated.

We've already heard about the budget.

He's had success with next to no budget at Northampton but SUFC is a totally different beast. You just know that if he attempts to try the same here, it probably won't come off purely because it's Sheffield United.

Let's not big everything up too much just yet, because you know how this club works. The more hope and optimism there is, the harder it all comes crashing back down. Like last season.

Your thoughts are welcomed and I'm happy as anyone with the appointment but let's keep a level head and not get carried away, because we all know what happens when we do.

Seems we’re in agreement for a change.

He sounds like the polar opposite of Adkins.

Some will see this as a good thing. But the change from chalk to cheese in the manager’s hot seat year on year has been amongst the most damaging trends of this club in recent years in my opinion. The positive in that respect is Adkins only made permanent signings so it’s not like a full dressing room of Adkins’ players to contend with.

What about Rod McDonald? How good is he? Any chance we could go in for him?

As for Holmes, he's always appeared to have bags of ability going back to his Barnet days, he's either a late developer or it's ridiculous no one higher up has taken a chance on him.

Think the right back, Moloney is also quite highly rated. What are your thoughts on him cobbler150 ?

Welcome cobbler150, many thanks for this very positive insight, along with many I really do hope you are right. We have shown great skill at SUFC, over the last 9 years, in dragging both managers and players down though, I just hope Wilder can break the cycle.

I've got to say that the video you posted is a pretty impressive demonstration of Wilder's character and I'm immediately more optimistic having seen this.

I hope Mcabe's seen it as it shows the pressure he's prepared to put on those who nominally are his boss. It demonstrates a confidence in himself. Very impressive.

I can already see the first post on Roy’s view from after Northampton beat us 2-0.

“Only Sheffield United could ruin Wilder”

Another one using back to front logic.

Just because we've continuously failed then there must be something wrong at board room level but no one seems to know the specific reason apart from saying the words " it's McCabe to blame".

We have been basically the biggest spenders, with the manager being financially backed every year. We've had unprecedented communication of club matters from Jim Phipps. We've recently signed big heroes on massive wages John Brayford and Bily Sharp. We've recently appointed the best available managers at big expense.
Basically we've been the most ambitious club in league 1 and always the bookies favourites to win the league each year hence why our gates remain around the 20,000 mark BUT it must the boards fault.

The negative is that we've failed to gamble everything on promotion and when players want to leave and we get a good offer we (like all clubs) sell our better players if it's for the best. A bit like Liverpool selling Saurez and then Sterlng.

Be careful what you wish.

1. Sell our best player EVERY season (sometimes more than 1 of our best players).

2. Have no scouting network except for the scout the manager brings with him,

3. Sack managers without giving them chance to build their own team or in Wilson’s case sack manager for not being in top 2 after having his squad stripped of quality.

4. Ensure the new manager is always very different from the last one ensuring there is no continuity in leadership style making it even harder for them to succeed in their first and only season.

5. Appoint Bryan Robson (a proven failure and awful manager and alleged alcoholic) and throw more money at his reign than you ever have or ever will again.

6. When you get a better manager (Blackwell better than Robson for example), ensure their reign is one of relative austerity.

7. Cite bad luck and blame anyone who is no longer at the club for failure without ever taking any responsibility despite appoint Robson and rejecting RDM.

Whilst we supporters don’t know everything that goes on at boardroom level, there is more than enough there to create an idea of why we are a graveyard for managers.

Now Wilder has gone I would be very happy to stay in league 1. If I am honest I think its where we belong, so I would like a manager whose proven in this league, Cotterill being my choice. The bookies favs in Page and Bowyer do not fill be with confidence at all. We have a terrible record of employing managers on a downward spiral. There are a couple of players Wilder brought in John Marquis and Danny Rose who have been great, doubt we will sign them now. I just hope its done quick. The chances are we will get a new manager who wants to bring in his own players blar blar rather than build on what we have, just hope we don't become the league whipping boys, if we do ill be hoping you lot smash Dons and Posh.

On the subject of Calvert-Lewin, there is something there no doubt, has a good knack of finding the back of the net, frustrating to watch sometimes. Sort of striker you spend 89 minutes moaning about, then all of a sudden pops up with something out of no where. Sure he will be given a chance under Wilder.

Given your stated aims, I think Page could be a good appointment for you. Has done a steady stabilising job at Vale making them hard to beat but unspectacular (big, strong, organised team). Think those traits would give you a great chance of staying in the division. Whether they’d take you any further, who knows?

To be fair though his signing was welcomed by almost all fans as the second coming. If, like me, you questioned the logic of spending so much on a fullback, you got roundly called a 'pig'.

It’s hard to judge a signing as a fans as we didn’t know it was going to render us virtually unable to make signings for the next couple of transfer windows. That whole window, whilst ambitious, saw us get a terrible return from a good chunk of investment. Despite bringing those players in, we still lack now what we lacked then.

Specialised CBs

Bite in midfield.

A decent target man.

Only now we lack pace as well after the sale of Murphy and the injury to Brayford

Can't believe a large majority thought it would be wise to spend up to £2m on him.

Fans lost their minds over Brayford. Unfortunately and to our cost, so did the 'professionals' at the club.

It’s because we don’t know how much of the budget it takes up at the time. We’re just glad to see good players arriving. Also, because we’ve been down in the dumps so long, we’re just desperate for anything or anyone that can be a talisman and galvanise this club.

And we didn't consider for one moment that he might come back and be utterly gash.

He’s been nowhere near utterly gash. He was performing very capably filling in at CB before his injury. Since the injury, he’s been less impressive.

cobbler150 Ntfcfan Shoe Army! thanks for the views and the spirit - good to see opposition fans on here not acting like complete twats (cf Barry Blunt ).

Delboyscap same; and sorry to see the Shaymen slip out of the Conference but guess that being that close to survival after the first four months of the season was a bit unexpected! Good luck on Saturday.

LMA chart just put up on SSN.

Numero Uno !

Where's Carlos ??????

TT score? Do thy have a managers' motor bike race?

I'm here all week.

By the way visiting Cobblers, I was exiled from Sheffield in my youth and spent several seasons watching Posh. Jim Hall was one of my heroes, not the most cultured centre forward I ever saw, but made the most of his ability and physical size. Happy days :)

Exactly how do you expect him to play like a world beater when he has muppets for team mates ? Look at some of the shit he has had to perform with ,as well as obviously carrying an injury. if we keep him ,fast football will suit him to the ground ,decent management ,team mates and atmosphere will be pivotal in showing John Brayford the quality footballer he is.

There are a few players who were playing 20% short of what they they are capable of, at least. Scougall, Coutts and Brayford spring out. If Wilder can enthuse these 3 then we are already better than last year. It's ok for everyone to say ditch the lot but the pigs are an example of players locking into the manager and achieving more than expected.
