I remember many years ago (and a long way from sheffield) when i was about 18 some old guy spotting my Blades badge and asking me “so when were you in the effing gurkhas?!”. I don’t think i had a clue what he was on about but actually there is a passing resemblance ...

How about this ....

I got the other version....

Obviously ours is miles in front of any other club but I like a quite a few other English clubs badges

Villa
Blackburn
Everton
Liverpool
Spurs
Norwich
West Brom
Wolves
Forest
Middlesbrough
Bristol Rovers
Gillingham
Bradford
Rotherham
Plymouth
Oxford

It’s all personal preference I suppose.

Like our badge, theirs has had a few different variations on the same thing, but the cap badge has similarities certainly

The Leeds badge is to match their new name = Gaviscon FC

They certainly give me heartburn

This is bloody horrible. The cutlasses look like they've melted (and not much like cutlasses at all tbh), the fonts look like they're from Old Spice deodorant or a Primark graphic t-shirt, and you can't embroider a drop shadow so it'd be useless on a kit.

To be honest it's made me angry haha

I would never support a total rebrand but I do really like the swords from the 'forged in' branding. They do add something...

A black outer ring also makes sense as our reds and whites have always been pinstriped in black on our better kits.

Now this is nice. I would take this, just a bit of modernisation but you're adding layers to the existing badge, not taking anything away.

I love ours of course - a classic. Has had the odd colour and propotion change but mainly stayed the same. Prefer it in a round badge form than as part of a shield that we've had in the past.

Others I like:

Everton's Tower
Preston's Lamb
Lincolns Imp
Arsenal's Gun
Wolves' Wolf

Scunthorpe’s ....

It’s a fair attempt at an alternative but it’s a bit wishy washy and not the classic instantly recognisable current badge.

As we currrently have arguably the best badge in the league surely it would be nonsensical to try and change it.

I also wondered why the current design is surrounded in mystery. It was designed in 1977, which isn’t long ago, so how come there’s nothing official or certain about how the design came about. All I’ve read is that the rumours are that Jimmy Hagen design it. Surely someone at the club or in Sheffield can put the rumours to rest and confirm the truth behind the origins of the badge.

I think I'm correct in saying John Garrett, the club historian, has stated numerous times in the programme that Jimmy Hagan designed the original crossed swords and Yorkshire Rose motif and that Jimmy Squirrel brought it back into existence 20-25 years later. I'm pretty sure it's in the Jimmy Hagan biography too.

I see what you mean about the variations. Here’s another example with the crossed swords pointing the same way as ours this time, i.e. up not down. Much better i think. I could make some clever comment about this being a metaphor for our fortunes ... but i could not have said this when the Gurkha incident took place circa 1976. Pointing downwards would have been rather more appropriate in those days!

Yeah, there's a bit about it in the most recent book he wrote (which I think a collection of his programme articles) Folklore and Fables I think.

My dad designed the badge for a tour of Holland in 1953. Still got the photo.

I’m interested in the background though.

Why did Hagan design the badge? Was he an artist? Did he design other badges and where did he keep them? Did he pass on his designs to the club?

Also what made Jimmy Syrell revive that design? Where did he find it? And why did the club agree to a badge change?

There’s a whole untold story behind our badge.

Designed by jimmy hagan i believe for a european tour jacket, my brother has one of the jacket badges from that tour stitched onto his scarf

Good badge ours. Proper crest easy to draw too. Looks good in different colours etc.

Seen Man Utd get mentioned as a crest that some people like. The original sell outs allowed Adidas to add Adidas boots to the crest during their kit contract in the 80s very subtle but there.

The crest was actually 'updated' a couple of years ago. Minimal and I doubt many even noticed but it definitely happened. The one on the left is what it changed to. Here's what it was changed from.

As I said, minimal. I didn't like the update personally. Not as clean. Yorkshire rose looks squashed in to the space. Blades too big. And the handles not as good. Always loved the 'wasp' handles.

Hagan was a sports outfitter as well as a player and he supplied the club with ties/blazer badges etc. The Yorkshire Rose and Scimitars was his design for a blazer badge in the early 50’s. Our shirt badge was the Sheffield Coat of Arms until the Council patented it in about 1977 and then we had to get a new one. The Hagan blazer design was selected and used as the basis. As I understand it Sirrel was involved in the selection but not the actual design of the new badge.

Thanks for that.
I always wondered why Hagan would be involved.
Drawing club badges is not exactly the type of thing a footballer would do in their spare time
But if he was a sports outfitter then it makes sense to design a crest.
Also it makes sense why we needed a new badge from 1977.

Would love to know the story behind the design and how long it took Hagan to come up with it, did he consult anyone?
Did he do any other designs? It’s a fantastic classic design, clean and simple with an image that represents the city and the county.

When you see all the club badges in the background on the Football Show our badge always seems to stand more than the others.
Trying not to be bias but I do think we have easily one of the best badges in English football.

Alpine Blade might have info on whether Sir Jimmy designed other badges.

Don't have much more information. Don't believe he designed any other badges. He was very talented sketching things. I was 7 when he designed the badge and he asked me whether I liked it while finishing it off on the dining room table .I have no idea what I replied but I do know now that I think we have one of the most distinct club badges which states exactly who we are !!

Always thought the Jimmy Hagan badge design was just a rumour/ folklore.
It’s fantastic to hear a genuine real life testonimy and you can’t get a better testimony that Hagan’s son who was there to witness it. Much appreciated, thanks.

Agree the design is fantastic and ahead of its time.
When you check historically badges they tended to have complicated highly detailed designs in a coat of arms style. Designed to impress from a close distance whereas Jimmy designed a badge that would be recognised from a distance.

However most clubs have since tried to change their badges to a much simpler instantly recognisable version.
The only potential changes I would ever agree to, are very minor changes.
The version shown earlier with the black outline and shiny blades on the badge look good too.
