It shows how bad Adkins has been when people look back fondly on Clough. Failed to get promoted from Div 3, brought in an incredible number of poor players, fell out with just about everyone and played the most negative football you could imagine.

Incredibly we are even worse now though. Oh for positive, fully commited, highly tempo football.

Just one problem the shit that Clough signed can't play high tempo football it will take Adkins time to move them on .................... unless Burton can afford their wages

He set this club back years, and that isn't something you can easily forget. He should have been sacked months prior to when he was, but it was essential to have done it before he could ruin the squad even more with control of the retained list. Don't want to seem disrespectful to some of our fans , but think we owe Mr Clough a vote of thanks , heading for relegation before he took over , a fantastic day out at Wembley, the one and only time , a good showing in the second semi in two years v Spurs , something our world beating neighbours haven't achieved.

Mr Clough did sign some bogey players , but then so have most of our recent managers.

Just cos we are still doing shit now it doesn't change the fact that the last 6 months under Clough were atrocious (Spurs semi apart) and he started this period of the slow tempo, mind numbingly boring football by having an open cheque book to sign a large number of players with no pace or athleticism (The two main attributes you need to get out of this league)
I would say that Wilson was far more undeserving of the sack than Cloughy was, weren't we sat in 4th position with two games in hand and 6 points behind 2nd place? That was after Wilson had more or less all his best players flogged off and was given next to nothing to replace them, unlike the free reign Clough had to sign who he wanted.
I wouldn't want Wilson back either btw it just makes me laugh how people still think Clough is the messiah

I'd totally agree with this. Forget the odd 'highs' in the Cup which will always end in disappointment anyway. Remember highlights such as Crewe 4 United 0, the disgraceful conceding of seven goals in a two-leg Play Off game or losing to Shrewsbury, Walsall, Notts County, Gillingham (sounds familiar?). Fans will not put up with sterile, boring football. We've had it under Clough and Blackwell (I'll not include Adkins as his overall performance so far is so disgraceful that comparisons are futile) and Man. U aren't putting up with it.

Give any half decent manager 11 years and you should get a good end result. Clubs are too quick to pull the trigger these days.

Yeah, we'll just keep wasting our Saturdays for eleven years being patient. Meanwhile, other teams overtake us, consolidate and become financially richer. I think you'll be alone.

that's what I thought, we were in a false position then, but fair play he did what was needed. The real test came after his first pre-season and full season after. I'll be genuinely interested to see how he does at Burton - unlike when he came to us, he now has a tough act to follow.

Bit unfair that, he just wanted his pal JB to be at his side and that cost money and most people were really up for this at the time. Everybody likes to have a good wingman, Adkins brought in Sharp. Sooty has Sweep etc.
Sadly blowing your budget on one player, who is in one of the least influential positions on the pitch is a recipe for disaster.

In fairness to Clough, he had a cracking first 6 months under little pressure...and he nailed it when he said we just needed 2 or 3 quality signings to add....

I’ll admit I’d totally forgotten the comments you mention in this thread – but I stand by every word. That squad was, at the time, an absolute disaster. Way too big, totally unmotivated, and we were struggling to find willing takers. In fact that was still the case in the summer that followed when Wilder said ahead of the season starting that there hadn’t been any bids for either Coutts or Freeman – they weren’t considered players worth signing. Which given how important both players became, was very lucky for us really!
