God's country ...... Rovrum!
It appears we're having the works! :)

Nigel Clough has explained why Sheffield United will invest a slice of the revenue generated by last season’s FA Cup exploits to lay a new state-of-the-art pitch at Bramall Lane, writes James Shield.

Work to install the DESSO surface is scheduled to begin this summer and, speaking ahead of tonight’s visit to Notts County, the United manager insisted it will prove money well spent irrespective of the division last term’s semi-finalists are in.

“Players will always be the most important thing but there’s no point in having good players if they’ve not got something good to play on is there? You will never be able to get the best out of them if they don’t,” Clough told The Star.

“We’re going to do the whole thing. The pitch, the undersoil heating and a few other things too. It’s all going to get a revamp and we think, because we’re a footballing team, we’ll see the benefits of that.

“It’s the same surface Bristol City had and you saw what good nick their pitch was at the weekend. They’ve e played 40 or so games of football and rugby on it already and yet it was still green, there was still grass on it and that enabled us to show some of our best stuff.”

interesting - did notice how good the brizzle pitch was and you could see the rugby lines so it shows how well the surface plays once done. No doubt our porcine friends over at S6 will be watching with envious eyes. Would also wonder if Bradford would do something with the FA Cup money too - their pitch is a disgrace, same as the pigs.

Should there not be some sort of minimal standard clubs should adhere to? I seem to recall Bruce asking for our pitch to be hard and we had special material injected into the pitch - it shouldn't be down to the manager to dictate how a pitch should play - it should be an FA requirement.

Quite right, FB, and just another example of which team in Sheffield is moving forward.

£1m pitch v Blackpool beach?
Significant investment in JTW v couple of Man. U cast offs?
Serious Cup runs in last 2 seasons v knocked out at first attempt?
Serious investment v dodgy Thai-boys (subject to verification )
Bright, modern stadium v 1960s rust-bucket?

The first manager for decades who could say such a thing without provoking a chorus of mocking laughter across the land.

Halleluya. Thank Pele for Nigel and thank the Prince for the dosh to do it.

The Hoofers will be distraught as they comfort themselves with those old Wimbledon videos.

Having watched the football league show at the weekend the Sty pitch must be the worst in the Championship apart from Blackpool which it runs a close 2nd to. Looked more like a cabbage field than a football field, jeez even the old Millmoor had a better playing surface.

It is funny how they took the pee over us spending so much money on the pitch, according to them it could be done for 50 grand, and now over on Porktalk they're praying for investment in their own pitch.

Let's see if they can get it done for 50 grand.

The £50k quote from King Monkey (supposed itk'er all things Blades) regards how much our pitch is costing was indeed laughable, with pig fans quoting the Star's report of £850k basically as a lie

Now I see Stuart Gray is quoting over £500k to have a new pitch at the sty.

We're installing the full monty, including undersoil heating and I presume drainage. I bet you couldn't do the 6 yard boxes for £50k.

Brilliant news... an investment in the future of the Greatest Football Club Ever. A board taking a long term view to football. If they believed that the football should spend most of it's time in the air then it wouldn't happen. And we should follow their example. And I couldn't care less about the investment or lack of it by the Ladypigs.

Think they did that when they had the South stand built and look where that got us.

:(

I meant football and how it is played, rather than how it is watched. But I suppose you could say that the South Stand was also a long term investment... a very long term investment.

The South stand being built meant saying ta ta to cricket and 3 sided ground, would look very odd without it these days

Was bad enough being without john street stand for 3 years due to board not having the money, mind you pitch looked nice in July

This is old news, we booked the company that does these pitches last summer to carry out the work

What rubbish.
Wilson had a "footballing team" three years ago who got 90 points, scored 92 goals and were consequently exciting to watch.
Kendall had a "footballing team", so did Spackman, so we were told at the time did Robson and Heath.

Bassett didn't have a "footballing team" but they romped majestically out of this division with 93 goals and 84 points.
Warnock had a team in 02/03 that were great to watch and successful to boot.
He had an even more successful team in 06/07 although they probably weren't your idea of a "footballing team".

I'm a big admirer of Clough but his style of play this season (or last) has hardly been scintillating to watch.
He's certainly moved us on from the dark days of Weir's "good football" and could be building towards something special.

But we're currently on target for 74 points and 64 goals.
Let's see how this season pans out before starting to rank Clough alongside or above our managers who really did create succesfull, entertaining teams.

I used to find it so depressing as the singing disappeared out where the John Street Stand was... My first experience of The Blades was stood on John Street. How happy I was.

Wednesday have had ZERO Cup Semi-Final matches since 1993 v SEVEN Semi-Final matches
Wednesday have had ONE Play-Off Final v FOUR Play-Off Finals
Wednesday have had TWO Play-Off Semi-Final matches v TWELVE Play-Off Semi-Final matches

That's why they turn up in numbers when they DO get the rare big event, like needing to beat Palace to stay up for example.

I think the less said about our play-off and semi-final records the better :(

Better to have played and lost, than to never have played at all. Or something like that. I will fetch my coat, as I am off to Nottingham. Come on you Red and White Wizzzzards.

its better to have finished 3rd and tried than wednesdays pathetic 15 years out of the prem and yet to get 75 points once in the championship , wouldnt you say
8th is their best effort , and thats bottling getting in the championship
play offs isnt it

But he didn't say anything about the last time either of us were in the prem or points totals or league finishes in the championship.
