Closing the Kop

Stupid decisions and it means we can't have the benefit of a penalty shoot out in front of our fans.
After that moan, a great game though!

If you want to pay multiple times the amount watching from a better view would cost in order to open the Kop, then sure, go ahead

Just more proof that cheap tickets don’t mean big crowds. £15 quid tonight against a Premier League team and people can’t be arsed.

Really was an embarrassing attendance tonight.

But if the kop.had been open I think at more would have gone.

If people really are using that as an excuse for not going to a game then they never really wanted to go in the first place. If people want to go to the game they will go. I normally sit in the South but I’ve never decided against going to the game purely based on it being shut.

The club would open the kop if the demand was there. The fact is, it never is for these type of games because people can’t be arsed to go. Yet we still end up with a debate about loyalty points when there’s a small allocation that go on the first couple of days.

I went tonight at the last minute, but I really couldn’t be arsed.

I’d definitely be more likely to go if he kop was opened.

By not opening stands the club sends out a message that it can't be arsed no wonder the fans can't be arsed. If I can't sit in my regular seat then I ain't going simple as that.
I did it once my allocated seat in the south stand turned out not to exist so had a right fuck about finding somewhere to sit, never again. It is decisions like this from not just United but clubs across the country that have de-valued this competition to little more than practice games for squad members until the quarter finals by which time you can virtually name 7 out of the 8 teams involved every year, boring as fuck really.

Even when the kop used to be open for early cup games the attendances were still piss poor.

For arguments sake, let’s say 2k kop regulars didn’t go tonight for that specific reason. Even if they’d have gone tonight, that’s still an attendance of just under 11,000 with about 1500 or so from Southampton.

The thing is you want to be sat with the mates who you sit with at every League game, now if you all have different amounts of loyalty point you could be waiting until the last day before general sale to get seats together. I'm sure regulars on the south stand would be well pissed if a load of oiks from the kop had their fat arses plonked in their usual seats.

Hi Stegosaurus here

Never understood footy fans obsession with "the kop". It's got the worst view of the game and is as far away from the opposing fans as you can get. You'd think the more "hardcore" fans would want A - a good view and B - be closer to the away fans so the obese Hull fan eating his 4th pie can hear you chant "you fat bastard" at him

It's just a self fulfilling prophecy that the only real atmosphere is on the kop, so anyone that wants to make an atmosphere wants to be on the kop.

There's only ever a decent atmosphere in the south stand for big games. At least the back of the kop tries to make noise each week. Without that, people lose interest and may as well watch from home.

I think with your comments about the Hull game you have just outed yourself as a genuine Blades fan, contrary to what loads of people on here think! This is the biggest plot twist since Bobby Ewing's dream storyline in Dallas (one for middle aged forum members!).

Look I’m a cup traditionalist of a certain age. But for years now the punters have voted with their feet, when it comes to the League Cup. If the likes of Debenhams can shut down...So can a football cup competition nobody likes or indeed goes to.

Would you rather:

Open the Kop and the perhaps BLUT corner bit and the away end.

Or

One of the side stands and the away end?

Or does this cause issues for disabled supporters? I.e. can we open that part without fully opening the rest of that stand?

In terms of view I'd rather sit on half way, but in terms of atmosphere and for goalmouth support behind the goal may be better.

Hey! My arse has often been described as pert and peachy like I'll have you know!

First line sums it up nicely.

It being a night match doesn’t help especially as 9-5’s are becoming less and less common many won’t be able to go due to work commitments. I know that’s the same for league games but if you’ve already got a ST then you’ve already paid for it so “may as well get your monies worth” and try your best to make it wherever possible.

If football wants fans to take the league cup seriously it needs to be played on a weekend and clubs should be limited in the number of changes they can make from the match before.

I agree it would hardly make any difference. Just that there are a few weirdos like me.:)

Oh aye totally get that people want their own seats. Ideally I like to get in mine as well but at least I have the option haha.

I suppose the club see it as not financially viable to open the kop on a night like last night. But then again you have to wonder whether they make anything at all off them games anyway so what difference would it make?

I wish they would open the Kop because when all these seat shuffles happen (I always get my own seat on south) there's always a set of nobs behind me. I'm not saying they're definitely off the kop, they could be off corner/upper, but I always get nobs nearby.

Although last night one of them did compliment the seating position...

"Reyt view this isn't it? You can see all the pitch without having to stand up"

It was embarrassing? It's a cup that no ones cares about ffs

I don't mind the League Cup games and have been to all three games this season but it strikes me that you can't moan about low attendances when it's in effect a reserves competition now. Also there is a self-fulfilling prophecy in that people expect a low crowd/poor atmosphere so they don't go.

17000 didn’t go because the kop wasn’t open wow
I can't remember saying that :) .But QPR got almost 13,000 fir their game. I guess Everton took a couple of thousand. I think we would have had a similar crowd if the Kop had been open.

This competition has never in its history attracted big crowds for the early rounds (occasionally a game against the elite will ! we played Liverpool along Time ago in the early rounds beat them 1-0 In front of a big crowd)club's now often use the early rounds to give shadow squads a game ( including the FA cup) fans are now aware of this and only the diehards attend.
The costs out weigh the benefits of ope all stands quite understandable really.
I always attend these games and don't mind the inconvenience of a different stand having banter with people I haven't met before.

You said it yourself: "The fact is, it never is for these type of games because people can’t be arsed to go." You seem shocked, this is nothing new. As far back as I can remember the early rounds of cup games get poor crowds unless you draw a big team.

Thing is, when it comes to loyalty points, you'll always get the "bigger blade" who say's "why didn't you get a ticket for the Crewe game yet want one to see the Man Utd game"? Again, don't be shocked that some people would prefer to see us play the big teams over the likes of Crewe or similar. If they can't get a ticket due to points, that's their problem, not yours.

I usually sit on the Kop and if anything it’s a nice break not having to sit on there with the terrible view, crap facilities and non existent leg room.

The atmosphere argument is neither here nor there. You can usually hear a pin drop during most evening games when people have come straight from work and haven’t had chance for a pot beforehand.

Aye well it makes a bit of a mockery of the old loyalty points debate then doesn’t it.

Not to open the loyalty points debate again (no, really!) but speaking as someone gave last night a miss and is towards the lower end of the loyalty points brackets: if every cup game gave 100 points as last night did then I'd need to go to 40 cup games before I move up another bracket. I've got my season ticket and hope to get to as many aways as possible (was grateful for Hull not selling out before I could buy) but the loyalty points you get for attending one-off matches are essentially meaningless to me.
