Don't get me wrong, I love Chris and think he's done absolute wonders for this football club in his short time here.

However, I've noticed a change in him over the last couple of months and a couple of recent interviews just don't sit right with me.

The first one was the reaction to the defeat at Hull, obviously a shocking result and performance. I felt that he put all the blame on the players by saying he's taken them as far as he can, dissolving himself of any blame despite a questionable starting line up (by dropping Duffy).

And again on Saturday when interview by radio Sheffield he was asked about our form at the end of last season and how the players kicked on with 10 games left, Wilder responded by saying "I kicked them on", again giving the players no credit for what was a fantastic run.

There's also constant digs in many interviews at the boardroom for lack of spending but I can see little digs towards the players as well which surely can't be good when we've got our most important 9 games we've had in years coming up.

I don't think Chris would have responded in this kind of way last season, he's changed his mentality from praising everyone around him which he did quite often last season to openly criticising the players and not taking any of the blame himself.

Just wondered what others think of his recent interviews or whether I'm being overly critical of him here.

Something goes wrong = players fault

Something goes right = Chris Wilder

Last season everything went amazingly - after the dodgy start so really we had no idea what Wilder will be like when results go wrong. This season was never going to be as smooth and was always going to have its up and downs. The boardroom stuff wasn't apparent last season whereas this season its right in the mix. Wilder is very passionate and doesn't suffer fools gladly. Football managers want recognition for their good work, just like we all do in our own job, and Wilder largely is humble but I see no problem with him saying he motivates the players. That's his job along with the players doing that themselves. If Wilder gets frustrated at the spending its because he wants so badly to succeed and I don't personally see a problem with any interviews.

The Hull reaction was one of anger at the players and we produced a great performance after so it got what he wanted. A masterstroke you might say mate?

That't my thoughts mate. The last thing I'm concerned with right now is Wilder to be honest. That's the best thing about this club in my view. Its the boardroom wrangling that worries me.

I agree with you re. the Hull interview as that was a risky move. The teams he plays are good enough to get results (even without Duffy although we're better when he plays) so I can understand his frustration when we fail to get a result. I know he was encouraged by the Ipswich performance and you could argue his team selections should have been different but it wasn't his fault that the players wasted countless chances to beat a poor Ipswich team.

There are aspects of his interviews which are motivated by the need for better players or the players he has to be better.

Its part of management.

Can't fault Wilder at all.
If somebody had held a microphone to my lips in the immediate aftermath of the Hull game I would have had a go at the performance of some of the players. He is a Blade and feels the pain like we all do. Once he had calmed down he toned the comments down.
He knows the players have to be 100 per cent on their game, every game, to compete with the teams around us. I don't detect anything other than admiration, trust and respect from any of the player interviews.
Keep the faith, these are good times.
UTB.

Whilst it's a very risky game (and ironically for us - one which will put off PL clubs!!) if Wilder wants to live by that sword, then who are we to question it. It hadn't done Mourinho too much harm.

Dare I say, read Fatty Samuels article in today's Mail where he questions whether a Mourinho is really bullying Shaw or is it the snowflake generation....

So long as Wilder is prepared to die by the sword of it goes tits up, GLTTL...

I'll take Wilder's angry, passionate and even heat-of-the-moment comments over the spin, shrug of shoulders and BS of most of our previous managers any day of the week.

Totally agree, I'd much rather have honesty from the boss, he also knows the majority of us see straight through the flannel we've been fed at times over the years. He was right about Hull, how we could do with those 3 points right now!

Just imagine, if we were currently toying with relegation, how the vexed, vindictive posts would flow. Posters who should know better would question everything about Wilder, he would have fallen off his plinth and lost whatever magic he previously possessed. Comparing Wilder to established Premiership managers, suggesting he bullies players, something we've never heard before, but I guess it sows seeds that will remain as long as there are posters who cannot exist without there being something to complain about........the season's not over yet, but for some we're in a state of panic. It says volumes about those posters who identify problems where there are none.

His recent interviews certainly give the impression that something is getting to him and I don’t think it was just that one performance at Hull either.

There’s more than what meets the eye in all what’s happening recently and imo Wilder doesn’t seem happy with something regards it. Shoot me down all you want but that’s just how it seems to me.

I think CW is pretty transparent. There are times eg Hull when players didn't put a shift in and there are other times when the higher quality of the players at his disposal would have got a more positive result eg Forest at home. CW is doing a brilliant job with the budget and the players at his disposal

What pisses me off is that we’ve got the best manager in a generation in charge and once again the board are doing their royal best to fuck it up. I know it’s easy for me to say as it’s not my money but are you telling me the board couldn’t give Chris £10 million for 3 quality signings through the spine of the team? I think it’s worth the risk. I honestly think Chris would get promotion with this. I couldn’t blame him if he walked. This board could fuck up a cup of coffee.

Provocative and bollocks

Thank you George, I've never been called provocative.

First the Hull interview. If you want to throw your players under the bus you do it in the changing room, not to radio bastard Sheffield.
Did it work? For a very short period.

Forest interview. Before the interviewer could finish his sentence about the players' strong finish to last season, Chris jumped straight in and made it all about him. He's had loads of praise for last season and rightly so but he seems very insecure because it's not all going his way at the moment.

Whats that old saying about a poor craftsman blames his tools. Not quite at that stage yet but the increasing criticism of the players is concerning.

If they are not doing it right teach them what they should be doing on the training pitch as players will only take so much criticism before they stop listening and become demoralised.

I think the problem is sometimes they won't do what CW wants, hence the statement after the Hull game. Sometimes he holds his hands up and says maybe we don't have the quality. Keep being honest Mr Wilder. Much rather this than other managers who blame the pitch, the referee, the weather etc

This board could fuck up a cup of coffee.

To extend that board/coffee analogy, what we'd do is;

  1. Make a clear statement that previous attempts to make a coffee were a failure, but we are fully committed to delivering the coffee. We have a rich history of making great coffee and we will once again give the coffee drinker what they deserve.
  2. We'd buy a cup from waitrose, sugar from poundstretcher and promise to buy the coffee granules and milk when we look like we are in a position to want a coffee.
  3. When the request for a coffee came in, a week before we'd have sold the cup because "it wanted to be a tea cup and not a coffee cup"
  4. Three years later we'd make a cup of coffee with the manky granules and sugar in a washed out Pot Noodle cup, which actually tasted quite good given the circumstance.
  5. Huge demand for coffee in a normal cup would ensue, but we'd deliberate to the point where the granules and sugar are now growing fur.
  6. Back to stage 1.

armchair psychology

The players set the standard at the start of the season. We were in the top 2 and trying to push on.

Now they lose to Hull, they have let themselves down so he's right to get at them, id rather him shout at the players than speak of their endeavour and how well they warmed up. Warnock is a shouty fella and gets results and respect, why cant our Chris try the same tactics? He keeps saying we are still learning? so let us learn.

Maybe they are just knackered after two seasons beyond our wildest dreams? Whatever happens, we are top half of the Championship.

Happy Fuckin Days

It’s not really the content of said interviews I’m concerned with it’s his tone in said interviews which worries me.

It’s obvious that he’s frustrated but, as a fan, I feel reassured when his post-match comments mirror my own thoughts on the game. What always infuriates me is when the manager makes it sound as though we played much better than we did and, thankfully, Wilder only seems to do that when the playing squad is weakened and there’s no point in being critical.

I think wilder always gives an honest assessment after in every post match interview. He was rightly pissed off after the hull debacle but the lads produced an excellent response at reading. I think the boardroom situation may be getting to him as it is with all of us. He's a professional so will make the best of whatever situation he faces?. I M H O. UTB

Let's not forget that CW is still learning at this level.

True, he’s a total novice at this level
And still some of our fans think a PL club might take a risk on him.

When a job offer comes up at a PL club he will have one of the poorest cv’s of any of the cadidates.
All Wilders success and experience is the lower leagues and non league.

Still rate him though and love how he’s transformed our club.
Let’s hope some fans don’t have short memories and start criticising him when we don’t play well.
