Didnt like him the first couple of seasons but he really grew into the role. Sad news, but its been on the cards for a while.

All the best to him in the future.

anyone who slates cresswell, quinn and even monty as wage thieves should look at the money chucked down the pan on morgan, who i think last played against portsmouth for about 20 minutes under gary speed? retired or just run out a valid contract? kind of takes the gloss of the hero we knew and loved.

The only positive is that he never got the chance to turn into a shit, old liability who didnt know when to give it up. He was still top drawer right up to his last match.

It took a while for his no nonsense style to win me over, but it did. His passing and general footballing ability improved no end during his time with us and he'll be missed as a player and a captain.

I could see him as our manager one day.

Thanks for the memories Morgs. Rock 'ard!

Think I remember wanting him sold after a needless sending off against either Forest away or Gillingham away (or, more likely, both) - when NW gave him the captaincy he cleaned up his act considerably. He did much better than was expected in the Premiership, and had he been fit 2 years ago I doubt we'd have gone down.

What should he have done differently?

have the good grace to retire when he knew he had done?

A great captain, and the end of an era i think of good captains down the lane-he will take some beating in the captaincy role, his leadership qualities were 2nd to none.
Good luck in the coaching role pal.

Better to call it a day through injury than to carry on playing at an ever lower level due to age, he improved no end in his time at the lane and some of the more talented players who he played alongside must have learnt a lot from his attitude and commitment. It looks like he is making a decent go of the coaching job too good luck to the guy.

I have a little bit of sympathy with those views that he should have quit before now but this sums up Morgan the guy has a never say die attitude and is no quitter maybe the medical people should have it more clear to him.
Definitely one of Uniteds better signings.

Regardless of the 'fighting back from injury' stuff, is that really how you'd expect anyone with a professional contract to act?

Lets guess he was on £10k a week for a year and a half whilst he knew he was 'done'. That probably equates to £750k - footballers have short careers, can you blame him for taking the cash? This "for the love of the club" stuff is just not part of the game.

If he had a year left, United probably used that to reduce what he was on a year and made him a full time coach with an extension.

As a player I thought he was a rock for us, dependable and a decent defender. Rash at times, but certainly played very well in both the promotion season and the year in the Prem.

A valiant captain who gave his all for the club. Like has been said earlier maybe he should have retired earlier? For example - will his wages be taken into account for this years budget? And will he now be taking a coaches wage & a new contract? Will he be our next manager? Who knows. I know he manages the reserves, so has anyone seen the reserves style of play, and is it a passing style or a Warnockesque up & at em style?

If ever there was a player that SUFC owed something to it was Morgan. I have no gripes with him sitting on a contract. Infact, if I was McCabe, and he'd come in to my office and offered his notice, I'd have told him to not be silly - see out your contract, do your coaching badges and there's always a job for you at SUFC.

Infact, since Dooley (RIP) left, we've lacked a football man in the hierarchy at BDTBL - Somebody who the fans trust, understands the workings of SUFC and who commands respect whether in the boardroom, the dressing room or the canteen. Can you think of anyone else who ticks those boxes?

Great captain and my next Sheffield United manager. We wouldn't have got relegated to the division we are in now with Captain in the side.

Cheers Captain

Yes, a great servant. I'll never forget when he literally picked Tevez up and dumped him on his arse at home to West Ham. Also got some poor treatment from refs. - the retrospective ban following his foul on (I think) van Persie and of course the 'penalty' when he 'meant' to foul Stevie G., and set us up for a season of poor decisions from refs.

But in all this misty-eyed recollection, we shouldn't forget his assault on Ian Hume. A truly wicked 'challenge'.

Shame about all that elbow of death business.

I played that video back several times when it first appeared and could not see why Morgan was blamed. He stood his ground and protected himself from the onrushing striker. A 'spur of the moment' incident and not intentional in my opinion.

Only Morgs really knows. Maybe he'll write a book one day and we'll find out....

Bit harsh there puppet...

He tried to get back from serious injury but to no avail.
All clubs have insurance policies on players getting injured which I believe helps pay either all or part of the players wages.

Regardless of that, why wouldn't we pay to get a player of his determination and quality back.

This thread has nothing to do with any player or his wage but as a thanks to a person who has given blood and sweat for this club.

Thanks Chris for everything you did for us!!

fook off that dirty little bastard Hulme charged in with the intention of doing Morgs, hardly his fault that was like running into a brick wall head first, that and other people have had far worse knocks on the head without suffering such damage.
Far too much was made of it by Hulme and the dingles trying to lay blame on Morgan, they should be ashamed of themselves.

I never trusted Dooley the Pigs always remained his favourites despite all the dewy eyed bollocks people write about him. Just another drain on the club taking a wage for sweet FA for many a long year under the auspices of being a "football" man. BTW he didn't give a flying one about the fans he was in a cosy position and never rocked the boat.

I agree. I think the loss of Morgan and Henderson for most of that season is sufficient to explain the relegation.
Morgan was the ideal captain for United over the years he played with us. (I'm not sure he was captain from when he
joined in 2003. I can't recall who was.)

Page was still captain in Morgs' first season, with Morgs picking up the captaincy in his 2nd season I think after Pagey's significant decline.

Complete and utter nonsense. All of it.

Chris for many years you symbolised the blades for me and in a lot of ways you still do. However i am in nearly no doubt that you will be our next manager so no long goodbyes needed let

Good luck Morgs. You've been a great servant to the club and a great captain.

If you become half as good a coach as you were a defender then you'll get the manager's job eventually.

Thanks and good luck with whatever you decide to do Morgs, to me the epitome of what being a Blade is all about.

Also dont worry about the wages paid to him during his injury, the club is insured against financial loss, including payment of wages etc whilst injured.
