In today's game, an attacking full back is a big thing and I'm happy that we're bringing someone in of that ilk. AND he can take a set piece.

We have to remember that you don't need world beaters in this league. A balanced team who work hard for each other with a bit of quality added is what seems to get you promoted. It doesn't need to be names that set the world alight.

So we spent months chasing Dean Hammond and this mythical character called "Dan Burn", and now (under the new regime), we bring in two players in a matter of days!

As has been said, we don't need world beaters (although that would be great), we need decent, fit, tough lads.

Back in the Basset and Warnock era's, fitness was a massive (see what I did there) part of our game. Us on here old enough to remember, will recall plenty of last minute goals, because we had lads who still seemed as fresh as a daisy in the 90th minute, and beyond into extra time. Lads who could still run, with pace, over a decent distance. Then look at last season.......

We also had tough lads, who worked for each other as a team, "the Battling Blades", "the Gritty Yorkshiremen" (even though not all the team were from Yorkshire!), how many times did Warnock bring out his favourite phrase to the press, after another last gasp winning goal, "the thing with my lads is that they don't know when they are beaten".

I get the feeling (I think we all do, and I hope we are all right) that Chris Wilder wants that sort of Sheffield United, and that nothing less will do. His interview style and his no-nonsense, down to earth, common sense approach is striking a chord with all of us.

It is a bit ironic, that last years phrase "United Together" looks like it might be more appropriate this year.

Asset revaluations are strictly controlled and the auditors would have had to sign them off. If Bury hadn't revalued Gigg Lane (and whatever else they own) in a while then they'd be entitled to do so.

EDIT: an example would be my parents' house. Let's pretend they're a company when they bought it in 1983 for £25,000. That would now have a book value of next to nothing (depreciated over 40 years so to around £5,000) but it's actually worth £300,000. A revaluation there would increase the firm's assets by 60 times - ridiculous on the face of it but understandable if you know the facts.

Well, that's how I think it is but Sean Thornton is a better person to confirm as he's better at technical accounting.

Well, that's how I think it is but Sean Thornton is a better person to confirm as he's better at technical accounting.

I'd suggest that if there is a an increase of that magnitude they haven't done a valuation since we won the FA Cup.

They are usually capitalised (i.e. 'valued') at their purchase cost and this is written down over the period of the contract. Obviously an EPL club will have an anticipated end 'resale value' at the end of the contract period.

This does not apply to us as we make all players shit so that they have no value at the end of their contract. This is a clever scheme to prevent long arguments with our auditors, and so it keeps their fees down.

See what you're saying mate, & agree to an extent, certainly about the need for the board to be properly backing CW financially (& the signs are good tbh, going by yesterday's signings).

Not so sure about the need for 8 to 10 more players though? It's that balancing act - need enough good quality cover, but at the same time don't want to clutter up the squad (as Cloughy did) with expensive bench-warmers and block pathways to the first team for our own promising youths.

Very glad about the evidence of CW's "horses for courses" approach - good Third Division players to allow us to compete in the Third Division (rather than wishing ourselves to a higher level, thinking it'll happen by us paying Billy BigBollox wages).

So now, as Oliver Twist once said, what we want is: "more, please!"

Spot on...except for the resale bit as any player out of contract can move without a registration transfer fee. Premier League teams will amortise the value of their £20m signing from Dortmiund to zero, just as we will with our £20k signing from Bury.

To be fair, Sharp, Hammond, Woolford, Baptiste etc. have very much been there and done it at this level. Just that 2 of them have lost a yard in which time the overall fitness levels in the division have probably improved.

The best left-back I think we've had in League 1 these past years was LJF, and I always remember him for being better going forward while prone to a dodgy moment at the back. I'd take that again in a flash.

I’d say LJF was a bit of an all rounder. Bit too accident prone to make a good centre half. Not quite skilful enough to be an “attacking full back”. Big lad, quite quick. Could get forward and support his winger but had the pace and strength to get the team out of trouble at the back. A very astute signing from Wilson.


I’d love to see us add a few in this window with his sort of athleticism. I’m fed up of having to choose between mobility and strength. Let’s have some players with both. Akinde, Tafazolli, Nelson etc. would be a great start.

Depends on the club's accounting practice (and, probably, its financial state). At the very least I'd expect the amortisation clock to be reset.

Suppose the difference is that both Hussey and Duffy are coming straight off seasons in this division which they played virtually all games and played at a consistently high level. The others had done it before, but some time ago - they were more "risky" in that sense, each of them (in hindsight, of course).

In saying that, both continue the "experienced" profile we became used to under the previous manager. Be good to see some younger legs coming in too.
