So we spent months chasing Dean Hammond and this mythical character called "Dan Burn", and now (under the new regime), we bring in two players in a matter of days!

As has been said, we don't need world beaters (although that would be great), we need decent, fit, tough lads.

Back in the Basset and Warnock era's, fitness was a massive (see what I did there) part of our game. Us on here old enough to remember, will recall plenty of last minute goals, because we had lads who still seemed as fresh as a daisy in the 90th minute, and beyond into extra time. Lads who could still run, with pace, over a decent distance. Then look at last season.......

We also had tough lads, who worked for each other as a team, "the Battling Blades", "the Gritty Yorkshiremen" (even though not all the team were from Yorkshire!), how many times did Warnock bring out his favourite phrase to the press, after another last gasp winning goal, "the thing with my lads is that they don't know when they are beaten".

I get the feeling (I think we all do, and I hope we are all right) that Chris Wilder wants that sort of Sheffield United, and that nothing less will do. His interview style and his no-nonsense, down to earth, common sense approach is striking a chord with all of us.

It is a bit ironic, that last years phrase "United Together" looks like it might be more appropriate this year.
We've been chasing Dan Burn?

Asset revaluations are strictly controlled and the auditors would have had to sign them off. If Bury hadn't revalued Gigg Lane (and whatever else they own) in a while then they'd be entitled to do so.

EDIT: an example would be my parents' house. Let's pretend they're a company when they bought it in 1983 for £25,000. That would now have a book value of next to nothing (depreciated over 40 years so to around £5,000) but it's actually worth £300,000. A revaluation there would increase the firm's assets by 60 times - ridiculous on the face of it but understandable if you know the facts.

Well, that's how I think it is but Sean Thornton is a better person to confirm as he's better at technical accounting.

Exactly.

I'd suggest that if there is a an increase of that magnitude they haven't done a valuation since we won the FA Cup.

What is the current practice for valuing players? I recall for a while they weren't included as assets as their values are so volatile but I suspect that's no longer the case.

Without checking I'd expect it was tangible assets, ie property etc. players are classed as intangible assets and put simply are included at a figure commensurate with the costs and written off over the period of said contract.
The revaluation would go to a revaluation account on the balance sheet and would make no difference to SCMP. The balance sheet just looks stronger, there is no profit tobe had until any sale.

As Balham has said, the revaluation would have tobe based on reality and satisfy the auditors on a true and fair view basis.

reformed for Jarvis' Meltdown.
released an LP afterwards.
did a RS Session, when "Who's Afraid of David Lynch?" EP was released.
Muzz is in a local band, but not sure which.
Mark, well, I haven't heard from him in a while. Hope he's doing well.

Most of their pre-comeback tracks are available on a couple of CD's, well worth seeking out

To be fair, Sharp, Hammond, Woolford, Baptiste etc. have very much been there and done it at this level. Just that 2 of them have lost a yard in which time the overall fitness levels in the division have probably improved.

Hammond only lost one yard ? Thought it was more like ten myself

They are usually capitalised (i.e. 'valued') at their purchase cost and this is written down over the period of the contract. Obviously an EPL club will have an anticipated end 'resale value' at the end of the contract period.

This does not apply to us as we make all players shit so that they have no value at the end of their contract. This is a clever scheme to prevent long arguments with our auditors, and so it keeps their fees down.
No they are not allowed to class them as assets under FA regulations. All payments and receipts have to go through the P&L. The monies received from the transfers can count toward FFP.

Good comments from Hussey...

Performing in front of the biggest crowd at this level will help me up my game,” the left-back said. “I don’t understand why anyone might think it’s a hindrance because it’s anything but. If anything, it should get you going.

“To get promoted, you need to win the majority of your home games and we lost a few here last season. With the fans on our side, I know we can rectify that. This stadium, these fans, is going to be key for us. Huge in fact.”

I think he also said something like "when SUFC come knocking you don't say no". In another interview Wilder said " players see this place and think 'I'll have a bit of that' ".Pride is returning.

If United are successful in recruiting players on sensible wages and big bonuses for promotion then we might be back on track. I get the impression Wilder is enjoying having the budget to spend and to a degree is cherry picking from L1 and L2 and maybe this is something new to him to some extent.

I remember reading an interview one summer some time ago after a disappointing season at Oxford and Wilder quite openly admitted he had made mistakes balancing his squad and was left short in some positions due to injuries and loss of form. His message to the Oxford fans was that he knew he had got some things wrong and had learned that you can only spend the budget once and it's gone. What struck me at the time was how true his words were, how openly self-critical he was and the fact that such experiences often have to be earned the hard way. All that will stand him in good stead this summer. A number of our managers have been unable to assemble a balanced squad.

That's incorrect. Profits or losses on termination of contracts through sale or whatever are charged to P&L. The accounts state clearly what I should coco says in his post.

Transfer income does count towards SCMP but only when actually received.

Suppose the difference is that both Hussey and Duffy are coming straight off seasons in this division which they played virtually all games and played at a consistently high level. The others had done it before, but some time ago - they were more "risky" in that sense, each of them (in hindsight, of course).

In saying that, both continue the "experienced" profile we became used to under the previous manager. Be good to see some younger legs coming in too.

Yeah agree with most of that. On the flip side though, having been successful in league 1 and played a few seasons after that at higher levels could arguably be deemed less risky especially when you consider that Sharp and Hammond had since been promoted to the Prem (twice in Hammond’s case). It’s strange how Hammond managed to be so poor when just the previous season he was selected 12 times in the Prem and came here with glowing recommendations from Leicester fans.

I was always less inspired by Woolford but he was even worse than I thought he would be.

Hopefully these two prove to be upgrades on Flyy/JCR and Harris/McEveley respectively.

Thing is if a bloke is one yard away even an old fat git like me can run past.

One yard at pro level might as well be one mile.

"Huge" not massive, he'll do.........

........until he turns out in blue boots.

Sorry I forgot the rules on intangible assets are different for football clubs......

Aye, be interesting to see how the new policy of cherry-picking from this level actually goes in practice. Will it work in the real world?

A great many of us have been calling for it. But, also, a great many of us (including me) were at one time recommending Adkins be appointed as manager...

A potential banana skin of course is the "size of the club" thing - will these new players be overawed? how will they react to (at times) mass criticism/disapproval? will they adapt their game (&, say, hide from the ball)?

We won't know till they do what they do "in the arena". At this stage we're having to trust CW - a manager who just hasn't operated at this level or at this size of club before.

Regardless, it's fantastic being enthused by what's going on at the club once again. Fingers admittedly crossed but, personally, I'm chuffed to be being carried along on the tide of enthusiasm being created not just by Wilder's appointment, but by his forthright words and his interesting deeds since he's come here. And you just feel that the tide of positivity he's actively creating is going to be a sustainable one.

In his interviews Wilders straight talking reminds me of Bassett so far.
Let's hope he has the same success as Bassett.

It's a change of tact by the board.
Instead of bringing in PL and Championship rejects we are targeting the better players from the lower divisions. The good news is that Wilder knows the lower league players really well.

You can bet that at some stage he'll be cherry picking the best players at Northampton.
