A little harsh on a well meaning body of men
am currently reading Nemesis by Max Hastings on the fall of Japan 1944-45 and Christ some of the testimonies in there. Here's one. The US submarine force was the single most effective instrument of Japan losing the war. However it is estimated that 10,000 allied POWs were killed lost on transports moving POWs either from occupied lands to Burma or back to Japan. In one incident a transport was torpedoed and some of of the POWs managed to abandon ship. The Japs then machine gunned them in the water. Some survived this and made it ashore to the Philippines where on arrival they were beheaded by the IJ army. And we are meant to be civil and respect this culture?
I'm reading 'Uncle Bill' which is the biography of William Slim, our commander in Burma. In one action the Japs broke through our lines and into a field hospital. They shot the doctors and bayonetted the wounded in their beds. Bill Slim liked to keep reminding our troops what they were up against.
There are still a few oldies around who won't buy Japanese cars/ tvs etc but most of us don't give a shit for our history or the sacrifices of our grandparents.
