Just listening to Talksport radio, the Charlton owner Roland Duchatilay (However it’s spelt)
Says they had Wilder lined up and he had even signed a pre contract.
The press conference was set in May 16 to make the announcement that he was their new manager but Wilder failed to turn up.
The Chairman got word that Wilder had been advised that the club was toxic, the fans weren’t on side and he believes that’s the reason Wilder bailed out. He read out some posts from the Charltonlife forum from many fans saying “why would Wilder want to join our club” and “his career will suffer because he’ll have all his tools taken away” etc etc. He was basically putting the blame on Charlton fans as to why Wilder decided at the last minute not to join them.
He asked Jim White “if it wasn’t for the fans we would probably have Wilder here as manager and what is Wilder doing now? Has he been successful”? White replied “yes, he’s doing a great job at Sheffield United”.
Du Chatelay even said that Wilder had a few players lined up for Charlton to sign/ loan, so when he backed out at the last minute, it put their preparation back several weeks as they then needed to look at new targets.
