Just listening to Talksport radio, the Charlton owner Roland Duchatilay (However it’s spelt)

Says they had Wilder lined up and he had even signed a pre contract.
The press conference was set in May 16 to make the announcement that he was their new manager but Wilder failed to turn up.

The Chairman got word that Wilder had been advised that the club was toxic, the fans weren’t on side and he believes that’s the reason Wilder bailed out. He read out some posts from the Charltonlife forum from many fans saying “why would Wilder want to join our club” and “his career will suffer because he’ll have all his tools taken away” etc etc. He was basically putting the blame on Charlton fans as to why Wilder decided at the last minute not to join them.

He asked Jim White “if it wasn’t for the fans we would probably have Wilder here as manager and what is Wilder doing now? Has he been successful”? White replied “yes, he’s doing a great job at Sheffield United”.

Du Chatelay even said that Wilder had a few players lined up for Charlton to sign/ loan, so when he backed out at the last minute, it put their preparation back several weeks as they then needed to look at new targets.

Are you telling me that Roland Whatshisname doesn't know what "Wilder is doing now" and if he has been successful or not? (Sorry, I know its not you thats making the above statement;)) Thats a load of bxxxxxxks, he's only got to ask google.

I'm guessing it was a rhetorical question to Jim White.
It was an interesting interview though!

It was a 'look what we could have had' question.

Of course he knows all about Chris Wilder, agree it was a

‘If it wasn’t for our fan demonstrations and fan negativity then look who we would have had managing us now”

Probably some truth in it but it’s an easy cop out, just blame the fans.
He actually said If Wilder read the Charltonlife forum then he would have seen that the Charlton fans were against him from the start and he believes that’s the reason he failed to show.

Charlton fans see it different. At the time an ITK posted that CW was prepared to take the job but wanted assurances about being in charge of transfer dealings. That assurance was not forthcoming. CW hesitated and SUFC stepped in. Most Charlton fans were in favour of Wilder coming so Duchalets comments are just designed to continue his war of attrition with Charlton Life their main forum.

I thought wilder discussed in opening months of his reign, saying that he was on his way to be unveiled as Charlton manager & McCabe either phoned him or talked to him in person. saying would you like to be the manager of your boyhood club & the rest is history

the advice that Charlton is toxic is a weird one, because if we are honest sheff utd at the time were just as toxic because ive rarely seen such anger at a end of season game than that Scunthorpe game

That was my understanding, that McCabe offerred Wilder the United job at the last minute and he chose us over Charlton.

Maybe the problems at Charlton influenced his decision but you can bet you bottom dollar the main driver for Wilder was managing the club he loves.

The Charlton owner using Wilder as a stick to beat the fans with is a bit desperate imo. Saying 'if you fans weren't so tough on us look what you could have had' is deflecting blame to people who have no say in how the clubs run.

Imagine if McCabe tried pulling such a stunt?!

When I was writing it, I did wonder whether I could handle the debate it could cause, I'm interested to see opinions though. I'll start...

As many mistakes as he's made, he's never tried blaming United's failures on the fans.

Charlton fans never deserved Wilder. They had their time under Curbishley, he got them established in the Premier League and then they fucking decide they are tired of his brand of football, can remember being amazed at hearing them bleating on phone ins.

They got what they wished for and then what they deserved - League 1.

Wilder didn't get us promoted from league 1, Billy did, Wilder just helped a lot.
(Hides under the table as the beer glasses fly)

This is another reason why CW won't just 'jump ship'. The fans of teams like Sunderland and Villa are self-obsessed pricks and would be on his back as soon as a poor run of results came along. Much as I (semi) like Charlton, they're back in their natural habitat.

Our gain is everybody else's loss.

Hate to say it but I reckon the vocal and very loud minority would be on Chris Wilders back if we had a poor run.
Leon Clarke was great for us last season, probably his best ever but he has a few games where he doesn’t score and all of a sudden he’s poor and not good enough for this league, I can also imagine if Sharp goes a few games without scoring then the knives will out saying he’s past it. There’s no loyalty these days especially from fans.

Charlton fans not buying it

I imagine he was set to go to Charlton before we went in for him. Duffy said Alan Knill had rang him asking if he wanted to join Charlton with him and wilder but Duffy said it was too far from home. Then Knill phoned again and basically said "what about Sheffield United then?"

Its all in Danny04 book that I'm currently reading. Enjoying it so far

Such as when CW first arrived at the start of the 2016-17 season? One point from the first 12? I don't remember any boos from the fans when we were 0-3 down after 15 minutes at home to Southend.

'No loyalty these days'? Not everybody jumped on the bandwagon when we got promotion from Division One, you know.

But haven't Billy's legs gone? Could have sworn there were people on here in the Summer telling us all Billy should go to the MLS...

All football fans are fickle. It goes with the territory.

Any manager or player making a decision based on 'fans' reaction or how fickle they are is an impressionable moron who isn't demonstrating confidence in their own ability.

Wilder chose to come here because it's the best place for his career. Whatsmore, he'll be off as soon as somewhere else offers him better career development...

Make the most of him chaps, he ain't going to be here for ever!!

Chansiri only had to ask Wikipedia about Carvalhal and Luhukay but, thankfully, he didn't. :)

I googled Unluhukay and his record at getting teams out of Bundesliga 2 is quite good. Fortunately I’ve watched Bundesliga 2 and it’s just not as good a standard as the Championship. He’d probably do OK in L1 and might eventually get acclimatised to the championship but he’ll probably not get the time. Too much going off behind the scenes at the Sty for him, probably a bit out of his depth.

The rest of Europes 2nd division are no where near the quality of the championship
its like theyve missed out a division
here in Spain top clubs b teams are the only real long term quality teams in tier 2
Holland struggle to fill their top league with teams that would hold their own in the championships , same in France and Italy
Our championship has 10 to 12 clubs that can give the teams in the prem a game
cant think of another league where thats the case

Yep, Charlton deal was all but done

Talking of Alan Curbishley, where’s he been for the last 10 years? Would’ve thought loads of clubs at Championship level, or a big club in League 1 might’ve taken a shot with him.

They can have him he's crap , and they can have Billy Blunt as well , he's just as crap his legs have gone :tumbleweed:

Think he called a day on it himself, didn’t want the stress.

So let's get this straight their owner (who by all accounts is ruining the club) is blaming the fans for wilder not joining Charlton no wonder their fans hate him
