Championship Players out of contract

other teams seem to find them.. it has nothing to do with budget.. we like to sign 'names' to show how big we still are. trouble is by the time we can afford them they're fucked.

Agree with that but although we have chosen to sign older players regardless of budgets in the past, the budget this summer is likely to give us less choice due to the scale of the overhaul required - we won't be able to afford to go paying fees for whoever we want so will have to look to free agents - if we want to be smart, anyway - and most of those free agents who are realistic signings will be late twenties/early thirties.

groundhog day then. .same as this season all over again.

hmm .. i hadn't heard of any of the Barnsley defence.. perhaps they weren't any good after all.

Mawson is only 22, Scowen was 22 when he signed, Roberts and Williams came from non-league, White and Nyatanga have been around for years, all their other defenders are home grown, there's no unheard of 25 year olds in their defence. If we're going the obscure player route, Barnsley is a good example, but they need to be much younger than 25 or come from lower divisions or non-league.

Like jamie vardy and ian wright
25 year old Vardy was scoring for fun at Fleetwood. Wright was a few months shy of 25 when he signed for Palace. It's hard to find untapped talent at that age when even non-league has plenty of video clips of anyone banging goals in.

yes it is hard mate but that is what we have to do. other teams can do it. i've seen lads i've never heard of tearing us a new one on a fortnightly basis

We have to ask the question " if other teams in L1 can find good players ( for this level ) that are capable of being consistent, then why can't we do the same ??! :(

When you look at the ineffective players we've brought in over the last few years ........

UTB & FTP

from the cast of thousands, when was the last time when we got a new player you thought 'ooh this lad is pretty good'.. Scougall.. Beard.. it is a low strike rate :)

aaah, get ya!

Hamit Altintop
Bruno Alves
Jose Bosingwa
Raul Meireles

They're all Turkish based and out of contract in the summer.

Hope we sign Meireles and then his wife can sit next to me.

Not sure what she looks like from the front.... nor do i care ;)
Wouldn't mind guessing her weight myself Matt. , oh sorry mate you said sat beside you .

Buying Scotland was at least an attempt to sign some relatively unheard of players. Higdon was another nice idea of signing a player with experience that wasn't well known, but he wasn't well known because he was a bit crap and had to go abroad to get a club.

It's not like we haven't tried to sign unheard of players for the development squad from abroad/lower divisions/released from higher divisions, problem is that none of them except Wallace have been given a chance, and as soon as Harris was vaguely fit he was dropped, which didn't do either of them any good.

I've never really understood the development squad mentality, we signed a bunch of players too old for the academy that never got a shot in the first team, what's the point?

Oh sorry if ian wright was a few months shy of 25 and vardy was at non league fleetwood then that completely disproves my instantaneous off the top of my head reply to your post that 25 year old lower league players arent very good

Youve certainly put me in my place

I wasn't trying to put you in your place (although that was EXACTLY what you were trying to do to me with your instantaneous list of players to prove me wrong), but by the time they hit 25 they were known, maybe not by the masses, but enough that they were known, especially Vardy who was attracting interest from league teams when he was still at Halifax.

I never said some 25 year old lower league players weren't good (I never mentioned lower leagues at all since this thread was about Championship released players), I said if they hadn't been heard of by that age, they're probably not any good. Aim for 22 or 23 year olds and it opens up a whole extra bunch of players who probably do have the potential and time to prove what they can do at this level.

you can't see the point GG because it has been poorly implemented. This doesn't however mean that the methodology is unsound
just to follow up your point.. i don't think we should be looking at championship players 'at all'..all we have to do is hoover up the lower league talent.. we don't need past it championship crocks and failures
