It’s time now.
If these players and this manager are to live up to their potential and their talent, now is the time to seize the moment.
The bar has been set. Dismantling Ipswich, a team who bested us 5-0 should be used to kick start the ultimate redemption story.
No doubt many of us had wavered in our hopes for the season; I still don’t think we should be reckless in the window. However when we lost to a stuttering Southampton that felt like it, knowing we had a rampaging Ipswich team to visit.
Despite the adversity of an unfortunate penalty, we put them to the sword and showed all what was good about us.
Now is time to tap into the consistency of last season. Not only put to bed a poor Oxford team to catapult us closer to jubilation than despair, it’s time to put some of these cocky upstarts back in their box!
Yes, we gave them all a six game start and that has cost us a top two finish. But we showed that Bramall Lane can be a fortress again.
Win your home games and draw your away games and you can’t go far wrong.
With a favourable fixture imbalance, that would give us 38 more points and a final total of 73 points. 70, 73 and 68 got the 6th placed team in the past few years and Bristol City had 41 after 29 games.
So, bang a few away wins out there to get to that 8 away points as soon as possible and then you’re in bonus territory. Keep going and take pressure off the home form.
Losing Bamford is a blow but an enforced rest may not be the worst thing. If the rest of the team play like they did then we can approach any game with confidence.
So, whilst it’s not 100% in our hands yet, there are enough games remaining to make it that way.
Come on United. Let’s do this!
