Cannon

Wilder has been telling his pals that Cannon was bought for the club, not him.

The idea that AI came up with a striker that Wilder just so happened to want a few months earlier is fanciful. Wilder also said himself that he gave a presentation to the board about why we should sign him

There are a lot of good reasons why people want to keep Wilder but let's not get silly and pretend all the good signings were his and the bad ones weren't. He made a signing that contributed nothing to the run in. Doesn't mean he won't come good but it was a big signing that didn't work out in the way we hoped for this season. Every manager makes mistakes

Get a preseason under his belt and give him a clean slate for next season.

Best thing Cannon can do is get some sort of partnership with the likes of O'Hare, Hamer, Brewster etc (if Brewster stays) over the season, which should make him play better.

Look how Campbell plays with the above 3 mentioned players, they don't even have to look where Campbell wants the ball, they just know, and vice versa.

Take O'Hare's goal against Bristol City in 2nd leg, he knew exactly where Campbell was going to put that ball, and timed his run accordingly, same with Hamer's ball to Campbell in the final, they've got that mental connection which is what Cannon needs to form with them.

On paper, Campbell and Cannon should be an ideal partnership, on their day, they're both capable of creating and scoring goals at this level.

Cannon needs to come back next season a very different physical specimen. Physically he is currently pathetic. Soft, weak, slow, useless. A defender's dream

If he sorts this out hopefully the rest will fall into place, much like it did with McBurnie

If Wilder thought Cannon would come in and make any significant impact last season that is worrying. He clearly wasn't going to. He isn't a remotely imposing player. Managers should have sound instincts about these things, and what attacking partnerships are viable, etc. Managers who were defenders as players often lack judgement on this IMO, and Wilder is one of them. See Moore and O'Hare this season - a horrendous combination. And Cannon - what was the plan? Was there a plan?

So here is the big issue for the summer: Cannon is a particular type of striker that needs to have a specific type of support to help him find the spaces, in front of goal. He is not the type of striker to play alone up front, nor play off a defender. He is not emboldened with speed so a specific playing pattern must be made for him where he can operate in the penalty area and have the ball fed to him, ahead of him by a few feet so he can control and shoot in front of goal.

This should have been known to SUFC management when they forked out 10 million quid. They should have observed how he got his goals at Stoke and adjusted for his inclusion in the team.

Except for Hamer, we don't have and never had last season, anyone who could play to Cannons strengths, limited as they are.

If we are going to play him and expect his to score goals, we had better setup a playing style that plays to Cannons strengths and have someone (or two) who can set up Cannon in front of goal.

That would be one hell of a change of tactics, one I honestly don't see us doing, especially of McBurnie comes home.

He scored 11 in 25 matches for Stoke... You don't go from good to rubbish overnight, nor do you do the opposite.

Something isn't working, even in the warm up against Bristol he was skying them into the Kop!

Lets give him a summer and see how he fairs next season. I think he will still come good. I liked his goal against Burnley, I thought it showed what he has about him and what he could do.

But that entails ignoring all the other games where he failed to score and which might possibly show what he has about him and what he can’t do. Can’t have it both ways.

McGoldrick (for sure) at 41 and Sharp at 53 (probably) would offer more for us next season.

Yeah I said it.

Disastrous signing that will only compound itself if the club insists on hanging on. Flogging the dead horse so to say.

His agent should be “encouraged” to find him another pay day and we should be accepting whatever scraps we can recoup from the bonkers fee we significantly overpaid.

Lessons need to be learned from previous mistakes like this and Leopards don’t change spots overnight, which would be necessary in this case !!

I hope I’m wrong. I doubt it 👀.

This is the one post so far that has left me in no doubt that the lad is going to be a big success.

I can’t get my head round the idea that AI came up with a striker that seemingly has no attributes for a striker other than he’s got a very good finish on him.

Perhaps it is the case that Blades fans of my generation have been spoiled in respect of strikers , in that most of our favourites had an almost immediate impact and continued to do so in their time with us .

These include the likes of Mick Jones , Brian Deane , Tony Agana , Alan Birchenall etc . with probably the most outstanding example being that of the noble Derek ‘Doc’ Pace .

On a cold but beautifully sunny Boxing Day in 1957 he made hid debut for us , having signed that very morning and it took him around 20 minutes to win the hearts and minds of those of us who were there at the time , an affection which would last throughout his career with us .

Not only did he score a fine goal after just 8 minutes , he demonstrated many other attributes of a centre forwards play which were an absolute pleasure to watch .

Partly as a result of these experiences , I am deeply sceptical of the “ Give him time , there’s a player in there somewhere “ mantra which has been promoted for a number of our signings in this position in recent years.

As for the suggestion by one poster that we need to ‘build a team’ around Tom Cannon I am left completely mistified.
