Cannon

I want Cannon to start on Tuesday. Coming on when we are leading and not overly pushing to attack isn't great for him ATM. Granted he's started plenty and not scored, I get that. He needs a goal, and starting is his best chance. I hope he starts, then if not leading, we can bring Campbell on. If we are leading, take Cannon off and bring Moore on. We'll need all 3 for the run in.
Absolutely not, we alsways need to start on the front foot with the best team and chance of scoring ….we don’t have time for soft soaping and managing a players individual needs right now, we need to be patient, he’s here for the long term.

I was quite vocal in the rumour thread about my feelings on Cannon. Which were that we shouldn’t be paying close to £10m for him.

I always thought whenever I saw him that he was fairly passive. Good finisher without influencing the game all that much. Didn’t seem to have an outstanding attribute. He’s not big, he’s not particularly fast or strong.

BUT

I do no understand this mindset of now just turning on him and writing him off. If you’re a real blade you should be supporting him. He’s here. He didn’t value himself at £10m. The best outcome for United and therefore the best outcome for us fans is that he’s a success. If that takes a season or two then so be it. Otherwise you may as well now be wishing we’d flushed that cash down the bog. We either need to benefit from his goals or eventually make a profit or both.

Aye
If the definition of “plenty” is 4 🤔

At the time the need wasn’t there to be spending that much on a striker we were crying out for a decent defender to replace Souttar
That’s where the money should have gone.

There was a need because we kept being forced to play Academy striker Ryan One and he’s not good enough.

Our 2 main strikers Campbell and Moore were both injury prone and liable not to play much.
Brewster did have injury problems but seems better these days….however he’s struggled to score.

So just due to the lack of numbers….we needed a striker and a central defender.

Think most people in the game have said a fair price for Cannon would be 6 million.
However in January selling clubs know that buying clubs are desperate and we had a competitor in Sunderland who also wanted him.

Imagine Cannon going to selling and him making a difference there,
Our club would have been criticised for its lack of ambition,

Our bid blows Sunderland out of the water, we keep showing ambition but the fans still criticise.
When Cannon starts scoring goals….no doubt it will be the same fans telling us how great he is.

Penalties now don’t count.

Campbells open net chance was easier than any penalty.

Just support the team.
Penalties count, but it's not a measure of how impactful a forward is in-play. If we started letting Cooper take penalties, he'd get a few goals - wouldn't mean he's an attacking threat. The right stat to look at is non-penalty goals.

We definitely overpaid for him, but Campbell and Moore were both out injured at the time, leaving us with the teenager One and perennial damp squib Brewster. In other words, we were definitely short up front.

When the signing was announced Wilder said “position specific…. we needed someone to play on the shoulder and stretch the game.” It’s not really happening though, for one reason or another.
We use him at the moment how we used to use Connor Washington. I can't see him ever flourishing with BBD on one wing and Hamer on the other. I think he needs JRS on the pitch somewhere in that to create him stuff and make space. It's all a bit congested for a player like him, whereas Campbell thrives.

He’d also do well with Arblaster behind him. Very foolish to write off a 22 year old. I expect us to adapt our style to suit him over time.

You can say ........

Cannon is a good striiker who is more than good enough who will come good

You can also say .....

Why on earth are we spending 10 million on a striker when we already have Cambell / Diaz / Moore / Brewster who can fill the role of 1 striker

Cannon is a perfectly good player and signing but to sign him for that much when we clearly only play with 1 up top is baffling

Cannon is a perfectly good player? Absolutely nowt so far to suggest anything like it.

There is precious little to clearly evidence or dispute all that you state above. And obviously TC is a young lad still learning his trade with a truck load of potential to improve as a consequence.

However. And I don’t believe this puts me in the turning on him or writing him off bracket. Others may see if differently though !!

His start as a Blades player has been slow. Maybe not even as good as that. Maybe poor. Maybe shocking.

What is the GENUINE concern (for me at least) is that vital resources have been invested in a player that looks like he’s a project rather than anything remotely like the finished article.

And without joining the Wilder bashing fraternity which I could never ever do, his judgement when given substantial funds to improve us at the top of the pitch is worthy of scrutiny. It’s possible that such scrutiny would ultimately severely question his judgement as a key man of a football club like ours that is wanting to be progressive and allocating limited resources on, let’s not mince around with words here, failures.

He HAS signed off on multi million pound failures at the top of the pitch in the past. Much less so in other areas of the pitch where his recruitment decisions have been mostly inspired.

IF I was the chairman of a football club, and if I was signing off 8 figure sums for recruitment on an individual player, I’m not at all sure I’d be completely comfortable with what Mr Wilders overall judgement on the matter actually added up to.

Not sure at all in fact !!!

Hope I’m wrong about TC. But from my perch, the required improvement is already significant !!

UTB

He’s shite and another Wilder “ buy British only” signing.
He will never learn so we got to get used to it but our owners will no doubt see this as an opportunity to oust him for a more progressive manager.
He was a signing that Wilder endorsed but wasn't a Wilder pick. He was actually a pick from the owners.

Another Wilder fanboy making excuses. Brewster was the only available option at 23m and 35k a week, and Oliver Burke for Callum Robinson + cash made loads of sense, Grbic for however many million made sense at the time. The gobshite has never made a bad signing in his life…. Heard it all before
