Can we break into the Top 4?

Looking at the teams that have finished in the top 4 for the past 20 years NO, looking at the average points total needed to finish in the top 4 for the past 20 years NO.

Then I look at the current table, our current squad, our results so far this season, our upcoming fixtures, the togetherness of our fan base and most of all I look at our manager. A man that doesn’t know about standards slipping because he’s never allowed it. After looking at all that I think YES why not. If we don’t it’s not a travesty if we do fantastic.

To be fair, they (Merson especially) do make some valid points. But what they don't realise is Tufty is already one step ahead of the game. We do not play the same game as last season - yes our CHs still overlap at times but nothing like we did last season. The pundits have mostly now accepted that is "how Sheffield United play" but they are not savvy enough, or still don't know enough about us, to notice the subtle changes that Tufty is making. In addition to this, the latest signings also give us another dimension. If we want we can defend and nullify the opposition but have two outlet balls (Zivkovic and Mousett) with blistering pace. When Berge gets fully up to premier league speed we will have another very solid and creative midfielder in there, which will give us more opportunities to hold on to he ball and dictate play better.

Will we get top 4? Very much doubt it, but I think we have an excellent chance of consolidating our Europa League spot, continuing to pick up points regularly during the rest of the season.

So to summarise.... It's a collective NO.

Reasons:
  • our legs will go
  • can't maintain fitness levels
  • have no players to rotatesquad

Which is all fairly reasonable and logical. Whether it turns out that way remains to be seen

Starting the season with an expectation of can we survive to posing the question can we maintain our push for Europe or the champions league shows how far we’ve come and how bitter people in the football institutions are.

Points which are constructively saying why we can't maintain the performances but he says it in a way where as a Blade you can see what he's saying without being offended.

Isn't it nice to be in a mini league with:

Chelsea
Spurs
Man U
Wolves
Everton
Arsenal

rather than:

Norwich
Watford
West Ham
Villa
Bournemouth
Brighton

:p:p:p

or even worse:

Wendy
Cardiff
Derby
Hull
Reading
QPR

😂😂😂

Not sure Arsenal & Everton have much chance of top 4, there would have to be 5 other teams collapsing before they got a sniff!

Just like relegation, it's still mathematically possible, in fact more possible than 18th. So I wont rule it out on the same grounds as not ruling out rekegation

Can we cope with 38 games given our fitness levels and our disciplinary/injury record......Hmmm......

It's very unlikely that we will, but us being on 36 points at the beginning of February was pretty unlikely too.

Didn’t we win our last game

I think Merson is actually quite fair. Although some on here might take offence to what he says at least his opinion is based on something rather than just stupid throwaway comments like Mills and Crooks come out with.

I think they’re all rather complimentary to us but it is a valid argument that the intensity may catch up with us, like it did to an extent in the first season back in the Championship. One rather large caveat to that though is the signings we’ve made this January compared to January 18. As long as we keep players fit, I think we’ll have enough in the squad to be able to rotate sensibly and last the pace in the top half at least.
