Can I talk about flags

Do not understand why anyone would want a Union flag. I'm English, so is Sheffield. What's Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales got to do with any of this?

When I was young, in the 70's and 80's, the union flag was by far the most popular with footie fans. No one used the cross of St George as it was strongly associated with the far-right. Somehow, during the 90's, the St George flag seemed to regain its respectability in England - perhaps devolution in Scotland, Wales and NI played a part.

As far as I'm concerned, a flag of St George, Union flag and Yorkshire rose are all acceptable. We're Yorkshiremen, English and British.

Depends which internet opinion you mine.

Union Flags are meant to be flown from the jackstaff (i.e. the bow) of naval vessels, at which they become a 'Union Jack', to donate the nationality of the vessel. It's not a Union Jack, unless it is flown from a jackstaff, it's simply a 'Union Flag'.

Civvies who have had no military connection like the term 'Union Jack', because it brings about the notion of battle and patriotism and is less bland than Union Flag.

I love it how people use the White Ensign as some sort of nationalistic emblem too.

Cheers, it was a genuine question.
I once looked it up and it seemed really complicated. The history of the flag I mean.
Anyway, ta for dumbing it down for me.
I love the flag and all its history, but God knows why we would need it on a united flag.

whoa...... Derbyshire used to start about quarter of mile from Bramall Lane and a heck of a lot of supporters come from there. With a bit of luck we'll have loads of Chinese students at matches soon too.

True, we have supporters from all over the place. But Sheffield and BDTBL are in Yorkshire.

hauled them up and down every day in port in my Cadetship ;)

I'd love to be Welsh just to have the Dragon on my flag

Go and stand at the back of the class.

When you can be good, you can come and play with the other boys.

There will be no leek-muncher love ins on here, thank you very much.

(Disppointed that I was first to this and saddened that Tyler could not raise the requisite level of abuse. Welsh, FFS!)

In our crest we have a nod to Yorkshire and Sheffield.
As for the St George's Cross there seems to be more clubs with that in their crest abroad than over here.
It's all acceptable but we have the greatest team crest in sports. We should just keep it simple.

Entered for this. Left happy.

I've got an idea. The design changes at each game and is exactly the same as the opposition's flag..... but on fire

Yep, Trevor Hockey, Gil Reece etc were a right bunch of tossers weren't they.

If the flag was made of Velcro, each s24su member in attendance at a match could attach their own personal forum name to it when they arrive at the game.

Seems to me that the forum management should be providing us with an individual name 'sticker'.

Trevor Hockey was born in Keighley and qualified for Wales because his Nan liked daffodils.

No they weren't, neither was Len Allchurch, Dave Powell or any other Welshman who represented us. I suspect the post was somewhat tongue in cheek rather than meaning to offend anyone.

Anyhow, they've got the best national anthem ever so that makes up for all their other shortcomings. (the French have the second best, it seems so unfair to be frank).
