...I could've said rusty Blades but that would be insulting.

Feeling rather guilty for killing a fair few threads over the weekend, I feel it my duty to kick things off again with a nice little quizzy.

Simple as Lloyd Christmas and Forrest Gump's love child, name them...

What year is it SEB? I genuinely don't know. I got given the picture yesterday and it has all the names underneath but it doesn't tell you the year.

i'm just guessing here, but 1967/68?

Hmmm... wouldn't TC be on it?

Depends when it was taken :)

If it was before February 68, then no :)

Looking at it though, could be slightly earlier... as there are no badges on the shirts and I think the shorts and socks were white that season?

Fair point. :) Still, I reckon it's a bit earlier than that.

Text just in. Papa TA reckons 1965. Any takers?

Nah, 1965 we had white socks :)
Good shout! There's a Wednesday one accompanying it but it looks quite different from their 66 side which lead me to believe it was earlier than that. Could be wrong, of course.

62/63 eh Beightonblade? What's your thoughts behind that?

I would plump for 1963-64 just because Len Badger is there. I think that was his first full season, made his debut at the end of the season before.

I'm sure i'm reight but the alzhimer/booze and all the rest plays tricks on yer when yer get to 30 ;)
Well I'm not far off 30 so I'll let you know how it affects me... if I don't forget :D

Another effort from big TA, now saying 64/65 - Birch double Vs Owls in his 2nd game after his debut Vs Stoke - Sept 64. Thoughts, anyone?

A front row of Wagstaff, Kettlebrough, Jones, Birchenhall, Hartle makes me think 1964, Doc Pace would be No 9 in 1963. Is it Barry or Tony Wagstaff ? Must be early 64 as there is no Woody.

I would say the photo was taken before the 1963/64 season the socks would be right then.

Nah, 1965 we had white socks :)

A quick squint through the excellent "A Complete History Of Sheffield United" shows a picture attributed to 1964/5 where we have socks which certainly aren't white (it is in black and white!). The style is the same though, so I'll go for 1964/5.

Woody wasn't a regular until October 64, so we'd had a quartewr of the season by the time he made his mark.

That sounds right to me - the thing that's throwing me off is that kit website (http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Sheffield_United/Sheffield_United.htm) that suggests they should be wearing white socks. Unless they changed kits during the season, the website is wrong....

It could well be except for the reason you say .......... but ......... Hodgy's collar is red, and I've never ever seen a United keeper's shirt with a red collar. Indeed, in the photo I referred to earlier, Hodgy's collar is white.

I think Hodgy is wearing a red shirt under the keeper's top in this pic. Personally I stand by what I said earlier and go with 1963-64 because of Len Badger!

You could be right about Hodgy's double shirt wearing, but I'd have expected Allchurch to be in a 1963/4 picture. Badger became a regular very late on in 1963/4 too .......

Only thing I would go on is that Badger made his debut in April 1963 at the end of the previous season. So he wouldn't be in that seasons pre-season pic ruling out it being 1962-63, and for 1964-65 they were wearing white socks not red.

Looking at a few things knocking around it looks as though we were wearing whichever socks had been freshly laundered during 1963-66. Pics of red or white or even black socks (they could be red in the black and white pics ) in the same season are around. So maybe the socks thing is a big red herring (I thankyou :D) and we should concentrate on the players.

Why not print it TA and show it to Mick Jones or Len Badger at the Lane next match, they'll tell you!!
