Calling all Senior Blades

Looking at a few things knocking around it looks as though we were wearing whichever socks had been freshly laundered during 1963-66. Pics of red or white or even black socks (they could be red in the black and white pics ) in the same season are around. So maybe the socks thing is a big red herring (I thankyou :D) and we should concentrate on the players.

Why not print it TA and show it to Mick Jones or Len Badger at the Lane next match, they'll tell you!!
That all sounds pretty spot on then SEB.

Not a bad idea about taking it. I've got the original print at home, that's just a crappy photo of it taken on my phone.

We could print out a copy and take it to the Who's Who launch on Friday. Denis Clarebrough and Andrew Kirkham will be there, as will, I'm assuming, some of the players on the picture.

Cheers Linz, would you? I'll scan it in proper like.

Aye... you lot don't seem to be coming up with any definite answers, let's ask the experts.
Yeah, come on folks!! I've got the list, ready to reveal but I'd prefer someone to impress us with first-hand knowledge.

I'll go for a back row of Mathewson, Richardson, Hodgekinson, Joe Shaw, Badger and Graham Shaw, and I'm still saying 63/64 the thing that is puzzling me is we have no right winger in the picture but have two inside rights. On the front row there ought to be either Docherty or Woodward.

Good shout on the back row Metalblade. However, still puzzling me is the fact that Birchenall didn't make his debut until Sept 64 so it couldn't be 63/64, could it? :)

Here's the full pic...

A very puzzling photo and a good point about the blond bomber, maybe the kit website has the socks wrong. Looking at the front row we have I think Tony Wagstaff so 64/65 does seem more likely as he had only made a couple of appearances by late 64 Kettlebrough was the regular inside right, I'm still puzzled as to why Docherty isn't in the pic or a very young Woodward. Having said all that everyone is assuming it is a pre season photo that might not be the case looking at the grass to me it looks a bit worn.

Aye, but like Happyhippy said "Woody wasn't a regular until October 64". How late on in 64 did Kettlebrough get in the side? We need a timeline diagram!

TA... I have the exact same picture (black and white though) in T'Biography.

Would you like me to put you all out of your misery or do you want to keep guessing? :D

Between the away match at Liverpool on 7 Oct 1964 (1-3, Birchenall) and 23 April 1965 at home to the dirties (0-3) inclusive, they played alongside each other (usually with Kettleborough at 8, and Woody at 7) in 24 of the 30 first team matches (including 3 Cup games).

10th Oct 1964 v Blackpool

Hodgekinson
Badger Shaw G
Wagstaff B Shaw J Mathewson
Kettleborough Birchenhall
Woodward Jones Hartle

If this helps it was Woodward and B Wagstaff's second game each The regulars till then were Richardson and Docherty :confused::confused:

Perhaps you ought to be considering not the players or the kits, but what's in the background...

EDIT: In fact, if this picture is when the Biography says its from, what's in the background shouldn't be in the background :)

The biography gives the date as 1966... which is when the "new" Bramall Lane end opened. But photos during its construction show that the corner stand had already been removed. Coupled with that, the kits in 1966 had the Sheffield coat of arms on.

Is the Biography wrong?

Is the Biography wrong?

Definately wrong, Kettleborough wasn't a Blade in 1966 he made his debut for Newcastle in January 66.

Looking that way Linz! Andy and Denis will be devastated!

[edit to add] Indeed metalblade, Kettleborough's last match for United was on New Year's Day 1966.

Ok so we've got the following:

Back row, L to R: Matthewson (6), Richardson (4), Hodgkinson (1), J. Shaw (5,C), Badger (2), G Shaw (3).
Front row, L to R: Wagstaff (7), Kettleborough (8), Jones (9), Birchenall (10), Hartle (11).

Birchenall made his debut in September 64 ruling out any time before.

No Woody. Too young - still in reserves? He made his debut in October 1964.

From this, is it safe to assume the photo was taken between September and the end of October 1964?

Having emailed the webmaster at the historic kits website regarding the socks issue, he responded with this:

David Moor said:
My sources for the 1964-65 kit are a couple of undated pictures in the Images of Sport book on the club. Other sources confirm that red stockings were worn between 1962 and 1964 while the badge first appears (with white socks) in 1965-66, and was (as far as I can tell) worn every season after that. So, by a process of elimination, I have dated the kit in question as 1964-65.

Which brings me to the team pic you enclosed. There are two possibilities, I think: the picture was taken before the club took delivery of their kit for the new season so they posed in their 1963-64 outfit. This happened quite a lot at the time. If you know when Birchenall was actually signed that would help us to establish a date for the picture.
The club changed their stockings from red to white during the season. My source picture shows United playing Liverpool at home. If you have a date for this match and can find an action picture from the season showing Sheffield in red socks, that would support this theory.

Case closed! :D Thanks everyone for participating. It got geeky at times but I've made some lovely friends along the way and I'll miss you dearly. :D:D

i remember sending for that picture myself, you had to cut the pictures from the side of typhoo tea packets and send off for them i also got one of len badger and some other teams. i think you'll find that its not the actual 1st team of the time.barry hartle was reserve just about always as i remember.could be wrong here but ronnie simpson(paul simpson's uncle) was left wing @ that time.Without looking it up i think woody and john docherty often shared right wing when len allchurch left.tony wagstaff when he played was mostly no.10(he used to get slated,as did simpsom, they called him mary!!hartle came under alot of stick and reg mathewson.i remember getting the picture and being disappointed that all the 1st teamers weren't there.i think gerry summers cud av been there at that time also.most of the reserve team came thro' to the 1st team. i could tell you the reserve team of '62ish: widdowson:badger:bernard shaw: mathewson:finnegan:barry wagstaff:woody:fenoughty:jones:birchenall:hartle sometimes bishop(part timer who worked wi my dad).think thats about right!bored you all enuff now.bye adios, hasta luego.

I love this thread. Great memories when my hard drive was barely used and absorbed just about everything.

I too cut out the football teams from the Typhoo tea quarter pound boxes and sent them off.
The picture from the OP hung proudly on my bedroom wall. I recall also getting a very small Typhoo red and white rosette with it as well.
By the pic, I had 3 rosettes pinned to each other which hung vertically, a large Yorkshire cricket rosette, a smaller Blades rosette with a silver FA cup in the middle and then the typhoo one.

It's daft I can remember all this detail today, but can't remember what I had for breakfast. :)

UTB.

Deffo between Birchenall's debut in Sept 1964 (he replaced Pace who had a stomach injury) and Woody/ B.Wagstaff's debut at Liverpool in October 1964
