I see Harry Bunn played for and scored for Huddersfield Town against us in the behind closed doors friendly at the start of the week. I know we extended his loan for an extra couple of months but we must have seen nothing in him and we let him go at the end of that and Huddersfield loaned him immediately afterwards.

Nice to see official site is upto date though! He's still on the player profiles! :-)

He is another one of Weir's little un signings. Came on as sub at Rotherham

Bunn's dad is an Academy coach at Huddersfield, can't see him progressing to their first team any time soon even with that backing.

There's still a question over how much say Weir had on player recruitment - the suggestion has been that it was more John Stephenson's work on the majority of it.

I alluded to this on another post (can't remember which one). I got a summary from within the club in a very open discussion

United have a football committee, for want of a better word. Basically recruitment is much more than just a manager going out and buying who he wants.

Recruitment starts with the manager identifying the position, the committee identify players on a full range of criteria. Once a pool of players for that position are identified this gets presented to the manager. The manager selects his target and the club tries to get him. So the manager has a big say on who he gets. But the club does the recruitment and vetting

It's also worth mentioning that managers often want players for right now, whereas the club often likes young development players

Is the very self-same committee that came up with the design for the Zebra?

;)

We've signed a few "development" players over the last few seasons. Have any actually "made the grade"?
Of the current first team squad (poor as it may be) are any members of the development idea?

I'm sure ALL managers, having spotted a weakness in the squad, want to fix it now (as do most supporters) rather than have some youngster, probably on a par with our own youth players, pottering around for a couple of years whilst the team suffers.

With the youth squads it's a gamble - lowish cost, low probability of coming off, but if it does, very high return (either by improving first team or cashing in - I'll leave others to discuss what we'd be more likely to do ;) )

I'm glad we do it, but it would be nice if we'd get better at it.

It will be interesting to see if recruitment improves now Stephenson has gone. We have signed some real crap in recent seasons.

Cloughie has said he consults the chief scout (his brother) and all his key coaching staff. If they all say "yes" they make an approach. It'll be interesting to see how they get on. I'm more optimistic.

I can see the value, if our scouting network comes up with a talented/potentially talented recruit and we bring him in, but this has to be regardless of position surely.

I can't see the value of the bit in Swiss's post that says the manager identifies a requirement and THEN we sign a developer. For me, if there's a weakness, it needs addressing immediately not in one/two years time.

Yes, good point well made.

Sensibly, it's two strands:

a) Targeted purchase of players that will immidiately fit into a team in positions that need improving
b) Purchase of pretty much any youngster who looks like he could develop into something special, as long as they're cheap now.

Who says that Stephenson has gone? I haven't heard that anywhere...

Player procurement has been a worry for a while.

I like this bit from Oreyt Sensibly, it's two strands:

b) Purchase of pretty much any youngster who looks like he could develop into something special, as long as they're cheap now

It seems to me that the committee approach is sensible for scenario b above. But for scenario a, I would think that in many cases the best players have gone elsewhere having been snapped up by a club with fewer links in the decision making chain.

So how does it work now under Clough? Does anyone know

Were have you heard this?

Yes I've got this wrong (see links above), it looks like he didn't get the job at Derby. But if he's looking at other jobs I can't see him staying long

I don't think there was much wrong with most of the signings made this summer in regards to talent however they seem to struggle to have the character that was going on around them. Baxter and now Murphy have come into the team and the next one I expect the next one to start getting game time is Cuvellier.

The signings were not the problem, the manager was. Saying that, we really need a striker to play with Baxter (one that scores goals). I still think out of the players there now that should be Miller as his movement would compliment Baxter's vision.

Slowly slowly catch a monkey and I am learning to be a little bit patient with it.

Me neither
UTB

If he is still with us Kenty, he is keeping his head beneath the parapet. I have no idea what his mandate was , whatever, I would think it would take a Prince's ransom to get shut.
If for example, we had offered him. and for that matter,Weir, a 'trial period' to prove themselves, we wouldn't have had to shell out a huge amount in severance payments.
How ridiculous. for example, that managers such as AVG. allegedly has, or is in line to receive two massive pay offs
Once you are aboard the managerial round about, you cant lose , even if you lose and are a perennial loser Not that this comment applies to AVG you understand.. Think I have the wrong initials here chaps.
I have just sampled my own moonshine.
