Brooks may start tonight

Colin ruined Tonge by trying to turn him into a complete midfield player, winning the ball and tackling wasn't his game he was far more effective running at and attacking defences. Back in the day Tonge was getting linked with the top clubs just like Brooks strange how his career stalled and went into decline. I guess you are never really sure how things will turn out.
Expect Brooks to be ruined then, because Wilder wants all of his players to be winning the ball and tackling.

He didnt ruin him at al he lost a yard of pace through injurys and had to adjust his game

And despite being “ruined” he went on to play in the Premier League with us, and didn’t look out of place either. When Warnock talks of the players that lost out due to the Tevez saga, it’s the likes of Tonge that would have likely still featured in a 2nd season in the Premier League but were probably never likely to attract interest from Premier League clubs once dropping out of it.

Well we shall see, Tonge never had any pace just fast feet and he never could tackle a hot dinner. Brooks has still got a lot to learn to become a team player and that is why at this stage he is not the first name on the teamsheet.

Tonge on his best day was better than Brooks on his best day

So far anyway

I know football is all about opinions, but rigourous statistical deviation from the mean allows you to disregard the extreme outliers.

Your 'view' is therefore outside the 'normal distribution' and we can go back to all being in agreement that DB is better than MT.

QED, proven fact.

Prof ISC says so (and maybe NKT too)

I remember him being pretty quick and
Used to excite me watching him running full pelt at full backs

Brooks is a talent but he could go any direction from here you just don't know

He went to Stoke. Probably not the best move for him but he'll have earned a few quid. From memory, I think he wanted to play centre mid rather than out wide, which is why Warnock switched him.

People who are saying Brooks is having a better season then Tongue 02/03 must be mad, Brooks hasnt even started 20 league games for us yet. Tongue started pretty much every single game that season and has been in the top two divisions for the majority of his career.

Brooks is a great talent, who is probably the most creative player we have atm, butthere's still aspects of his game which are weak.
Plus every young player with half talent gets called up to national teams nowadays to make sure they can't play for anyone else.

Leave the hero worshipping to the kids, old blokes fawning over a 20 year old is a bit sad

I know strictly speaking he ultimately returned there, but he was as bit-part as they come – though you’re right that he probably did ok financially from it. Had we stayed up I would have expected Geary, Morgan, Tonge, Stead to all have played at least 20 games.

And yet people STILL can't spell his name correctly!

I think if it wasn't for Geary's injuries he'd have ended up back in the PL. Very unfortunate.

Brooks is a late developer,Tonge was fully developed by 02.03. Comparing the two is pretty pointless really.

During a world cup year we usually change our holiday weeks so we can be away for the first 2 weeks of the tournament so Mrs max and her mate get the tan topped up in peace whilst me and my notlob supporting mate go to the bar and watch the football, not going to bother this year as we have no chance of winning so after all the success the junior sides have had in the last 12 months Southgate will still pick the same old dross and not use this as a opportunity to bring some of the stars of the future through, Brooks has seen the future and said bollocks I am off to where I will get a chance

Solanke (20), Abraham (20), Rashford (20), Gomez (20) and Loftus Cheek (21) all featured last night.

Chalobah (22) has featured recently.

Maguire (24) is looking like becoming a regular along with John Stones (23). Eric Dier (23) is a regular and was captain last night.

Star player Harry Kane is still only 24.

Lewis Cook (20), Angus Gunn (21) and Jordan Pickford (23) were also on the bench.

I'm not sure how much younger you think he should be looking? Who do you thinks has been overlooked?

I get where you are coming from but how many of them will make the final squad for Russia, and if they do will they get a game the addage "we are taking them for experience " what will they learn sat on their arses
For me Henderson sturridge and lallana will be over 30 at the next world cup most of the guys you quote have won tournaments at younger age groups have the winning mentality already take all under 25,s with the exception of maybe Walker I would rather watch us loose 3 games having a go than scrape through to the last 16 bored to tears to loose to Panama or someone and build a team to compete in the next euros and world cup

My prediction:-

Gomez
Abraham
Pickford
Maguire
Stones
Rashford
Loftus Cheek
as well as Kane and Dier

make the Russia squad. I think having managed the youth teams, Southgate is quite comfortable calling on those who impress. Solanke will probably have to break into Liverpool's side if he's to make it. I think last night's back 3 might start along with Dier, Kane and Rashford.

Happy with that if they play maybe just me but he will play Henderson who I think is very one dimensional and plays to many side ways passes at least the boys in the last 2 games were looking for a forward pass all the time

Indeed, the best £4 million we never got. There aren’t too many examples where we should have sold but didn’t – plenty where we shouldn’t have sold and did, and others where we fleeced whoever spent big money (most notably Lee Morris).

There was talk of Rangers and Newcastle wanting Woodhouse for £4million before he tailed off and left for Birmingham. Still £1million plus Nuddy was cracking business in the circumstances.

If you cant see that Brooks is the best prospect we have had at the club for years than you are blind !

Best prospect since who? Maguire? Walker?

Very exciting player. Remains to be seen as to whether he goes as far as the above. Walker is one of the best right backs on the planet so will take some doing to surpass that.

I’m not sure he ever had much pace. I think he had good close control and the fearlessness of youth sometimes means that such players are more audacious when running at defenders. The element of surprise and the confidence he gained when he came into the team allowed him to get some real momentum and belief that he could beat his man. Over time, I think defenders figured him out a bit. He was still a good player but didn’t strike the same fear into defenders.

Brooks shows some similar qualities (that arrogance/ confidence to just get the ball and run at players, a good touch, quick feet etc.) but also seems to have a bit more pace than Tonge had. On the flip side, I don’t think he strikes the ball nearly as well as Tonge did. Hopefully he will improve that element of his game.

Much as I love Brooks and salivate over what might come , hes still a young lad whos scored just once
Some are calling him the new Currie , maybe but hes got to hit some 30 yard screamers and tear some top top clubs apart first
Hes benifitting from being in a side flying and should be over joyed at being involved so much , but hes not yet stamped his name permanently as a must start
His cameos get better and better and hes on the way to staking a claim
Brooks is level headed and Chris will have explained the path hes plotted for him
We should never pick crowd favourites ahead of players doing whats asked of them, hes getting experience , experience he would not be afforded at some clubs
in a team full of supportive team mates , hes getting the best apprenticeship he could have hoped for
