Breaking Teams Down

People who are expecting cricket scores every week just dont understand football. Yes, we have to find a way to break teams down who come and park the bus, but we did, as we won both games.

If we had been given the pen and Leon's goal was allowed, we probably wouldnt be even discussing it.
If they had kept 11 on the pitch they would have had 2 extra men helping with their 90 minute rearguard action and would've held on for a point. People are worried incase we drop valuable points which should be considered a gimme by not being able to break down stubborn defences. Nothing to do with expecting a cricket score as no two games are the same/

Maybe Duffy is the answer.

I wonder what our struggles in the last two games could mean...

Is it an indication that we're coming off the boil a bit?

Is it an indication that we'll struggle to score against crowded defences?

Will it affect the players' confidence? I think this is the one to worry about.

Maybe Charlton will get men behind the ball and set up to counter attack us.

Not the best way to be going into Saturday's game either way.

I think it's more that teams have realised we're not a soft touch anymore and aren't taking us lightly. I suspect some teams that played us last season thought 'put them under some pressure and they'll crumble, we can outwork this lot' and that may have carried into this season a bit.

We just need to adapt to that. The last two teams tried to kick us out of the game but that won't work this season. I think we'll have to get used to teams sitting deep at the Lane and make sure we have different ways of breaking them down. Otherwise, it could end up like Clough's second season with too many draws at home against weaker sides.

I imagine CW had to face similar at Northampton when they were top of L2.

Agree with Hodgyman, about sticking EEl up front if needed, the pigs did the same with lumbering Reda Johnson

Ok, Ok young Bushy.
Six months is a long time when you get to my age mate!!

Edit: And it was Alan Whittle for them btw!! ;)
Everything but football I find is the reverse. Six months is like six weeks used to be when I was a kid, time flies by.
But I'm running out of storage in my brain so it refuses to retain any football information now. But if it's a choice between that and forgetting where I live or that I have to take my dick out to piss, I'll take it.

Yes. Although it was only six months ago, you make it sound like a question to Silent Blade about who scored against Everton in 1972.

;)
Here is the answer. It was the only time we scored against Everton in 1972. It was in the last minute and in front of the Kop

I don't think fans are expecting "cricket scores every week" ...... but the last two games have highlighted how important it is for us to be able to break down teams that "park the bus".

This isn't always easy to do and invariably relies on either getting in behind the defence to cross from the by-line or having a player with the pace / skill to run at defences and create havoc / win a penalty.

We have struggled with this problem for some time now ..........

Thing is, I don't think we did struggle vs. Shrewsbury. It was 2-0 up and game over in the first half and they clung on to make it look closer after scoring with their only attack of the second. And that was with us having three forced changes that tore up our structure. It's not like teams can come here and get men sent off regularly and expect it to go well for them. We struggled to make it three or four, though in my mind that's only the equivalent of when we held the second half to 0-0 vs. Southend; the damage was done and the game was well and truly over.

Bury made it very difficult for us and you have to give them some credit for that, but they did it at the expense of only having one shot on target in a 98 minute match. Meanwhile, we had a goal disallowed, hit the bar, had a couple cleared of the line, and eventually scored a winner. I think it's telling that having been quite reserved in interviews Wilder was smiling and happy after the Bury game. Both of those games were absolutely dominant in every area of the pitch and we can consider ourselves fairly unlucky to only have scored three.

I've touched on a few things we didn't do well enough vs. Bury (not running at them enough, not moving the ball quickly enough) and we should always look to improve. For me the few negatives don't rule out the massive positives of controlling a game from start to finish and being on the attack the whole way through.

Nicely considered appraisal Poker. Having read numerous posts about us failing to beat 9 men, wasn't it a fact that they were only down to 9 with approximately 15 minutes to go? Not exactly the length of time that has been suggested, in which case why the mega-concern about 'smashing' 9 players?

In a short time we've gone from mediocre club with little hope of improvement to a side that has the players to do well at this level. With a few exceptions we've consistently played well, yet doesn't this show how easily supporter's are lured into thinking we've suddenly become a Div 1 version of Bayern Sheffield? The fact is we won, we were awarded 3 points, and at the end of the season this game will be forgotten but the points will be priceless as we march forward UTB.

Fact is, these aren't the first two teams to try and do this to us. Chesterfield scored early and tried to defend for ninety and ended up letting four in. Fleetwood have done the best job so far but couldn't stop us scoring in the end. If that were us doing what Bury did last night, I wouldn't be saying how well we'd done. I'd be talking about how we gave ourselves absolutely no chance of winning the game, like I said most weeks under Clough.
