Baldock isn't as good as Cash. He's not a great wing back.
A very solid defender, yes. Great attitude, tenacious, good defensive positional sense, great engine etc.

But put Baldock in the final third and 9/10 it's a nose bleed. He slows play down, makes wrong decisions, puts in poor / slow deliveries, on the odd occasion an opportunity falls to him he snaps at his shot and misses.

I like Baldock a lot. But ask Villa fans if they think Cash is worth the money they paid & I'm confident they'll tell you who he is.
Baldock isn't anywhere near that level. Wilder wasn't chasing him at £10m to be cover.

But the point stands that he wouldn't have made that much difference to us this season, which is what the op was alluding to.

Our problems started when our midfield descended into utter shite, and have largely stayed there, recent performances aside.

So I am not fussed about missing out on Cash, and we were never going to pay a player 65k pw who has just stepped out of the championship anyway. I am still fussed that we didn't sign an PL level midfielder or 2, but again....wages....

Baldock is a better defender. Not a better wing back/attacker. It depends what you want I guess.

The real loss was not being able to sign Antonee Robinson. He looks some player and would have helped us in what was (and continues to be) a real problem position. I think this season being so dreadful has been down to an accumulation of a number of things not going our way, and not that a left wing back makes a whole team, but I'm convinced had we got Robinson we would have more points than we do now.

As much as I like Baldock and think he's actually been one of our most consistent performers this year, he was one of the main reasons for our lack of goals for the first 15 or so games. His ability to break down attack (and miss a few sitters) is second to none. So I'd have to say that Matty Cash would probably have given us a chance of being further up the table, as he hit the ground running. Bogle, as good as he looks, has taken too long to come good for whatever reason, and that has meant we're relegated before he's even got in the squad.

ive no problem how the club have handled the salary side of things its sensible but the problem is its a strategy that wont keep you in the premier league and something thats got to be looked at when we get back up

Cash is kind of a shining example of the problems we have. We haven't even been able to snipe the best of the Championship because of our wage restrictions. Bogle looks a quality player in the making, but he's in the making. What we've needed this season was signings ready to step into a Premier League side and what we've been forced to do is sign potential. I'm not complaining about that, it's the way things are for us and it hasn't been enough.

In answer to the question, no.

Because neither Cash nor Bogle were going to displace Baldock straight away. And in a season that has largely been a shitshow, Baldock has been solid enough.

Basically, we didn't have a problem at RWB to start with, so Cash wouldn't have dug us out of this. Maybe Barkley in our midfield would have done, but we don't pay 80k pw for players, end of.

I'd argue given how Cash has performed this season he would have displaced Baldock before the summer window had shut.

I wouldn't disagree, but I still don't regret us not signing him, because on the wider point, our problems have been elsewhere in the team, chiefly midfield.

Cash is a much more orthodox player who would work in more situations and formations but bogle is more exciting.

I agree boggle could play wide in a midfield 4 in a 4-4-2 I disagree he can play more centrally in a flat 3 out of the two cash would be the player for that not bogle. Bogle is a dribbler not a centremid.

Bogle has more potential. But he was not signed to be a starting XI player and have an immediate impact and we were not expecting the worst start in premier league history. In this sense, Cash is a more mature, rounded and versatile player and would probably have made more of a difference, particularly as he has the experience to slot into midfield as well and would not necessarily have been on the bench for 3 months waiting for Baldock to pick up and injury.

On the midfield question, Bogle has the attributes, his qualities are not linked to being a wide right, although he certainly benefits from having the space to carry the ball from deep. But, it is such a finitely tactical game these days, that we often see how difficult it can be for a lot of players to take on new roles, unless a team can afford the time for them to develop.
