very limited player technique wise, did his best, ran around a lot, great bloke...

I have a strange request but I will try it anyway. I have just been talking to Bob about the incredible scenes at Leicester on 5th May 1989 when he captained the Blades to promotion to the First Division.

It was the proudest day of his career, as it was the only time he thinks he captained the team and walking back to his car after the game a fan asked him for his shirt which Bob said he had promised to Mick Rooker, but without thinking he gave him his captain's armband instead.

Whilst being pleased to have rewarded a loyal fan, Bob has regretted giving away such a valuable souvenir ever since particularly as the day means so much to him and I am wondering if anyone knows where that armband might be today and who might still have it?

Any information gratefully received as it would be wonderful if between us we could maybe even find a way of getting it back to him - something that would really make him very, very happy.

Many thanks and I hope someone has some information for me.

Cheers.

It wasn't me, but had it been I would have been delighted to return it to it's deserved and rightful owner.

Oooo ahhh Bob Bookah

We need to get it on the tannoy at the Lane at half-time like they do for illegally parked cars........

"Could the owner of Bob Booker's captains armband from May 1990 please return it to it's rightful owner.........."

There was also a life size Paul Stancliffe. I think Mal Sissons had something to do with these....he was just behind us at Leicester.
It was Malc's pal Ian Ruddiforth who did them. We took them into Josephines later that evening, much to the amusement of most of the players who were in there.

Sorry, got another question for all you Blades.

Bob was made captain for the first time at Leicester on 5 May 1990. Stancliffe, the normal captain, missed the last 3 games of that season. Who captained the team v Bournemouth and Blackburn and why was Bob made captain for the last game only?

Any ideas and information welcomed?

Many thanks

Stan the man got injured in the home game against Port Vale and got subbed. He was ruled out for the rest of the season. Cant remember who was the captain for the Bournemouth and Blackburn games

I have now written 8 chapters about Bob Booker and his time at the Blades.

There is already quite a bit of information about him and how you felt about him in the 10 pages of this thread but I now just have to write about:

1990/91 and 1991/92 - Bob in the First Division and his leaving the club. Any stories and memories welcomed.

Bob and the fans - how you all took him to your heart and how Bob mixed in with you and the city at large.

Any specific stories really welcomed and you will all be credited in the book.

Over to you and thanks.

For me Bob has never left the club he just went and lived somewhere else because work commitments meant the commute back was a bit tricky.

He does come back , but never comes back free of charge , like in the rallying call on the pitch , the season we got relegated .

Many, many congratulations to all of you. Really delighted that you've gone up.

Looking forward to playing you again next season and I'm sure Simon Moore and Jack O'Connell will both get good receptions at Griffin Park.

The matches will also provide perfect opportunities to promote the Bob Booker book assuming I can finish it in time.

Everyone I've spoken to associated with your club has been really friendly and helpful, thanks to you all, and I'm about to move onto his time at Brighton now.

I've got some great stuff about his spell with you and I now fully understand why he had the best times of his career as a Blade. He turned into Superman for a couple of years and it's a wonderful story.

The Bob Booker biography is finally finished after a year's researching and writing and it is off to the printers at the end of the week. Hope to have it available by mid to end of August!

Nice one. Good luck.

Does Sir Bob get a percentage of profits?

The great thing about Bob in a Blades shirt is that when we grew up wanting to be Currie, Woody, Deane or whoever, we could actually identify with Bob. The passion, commitment and never say die attitude, who won over the doubters with his heart, and a man totally at ease with the fans who loved him. When he came onto the Kop on that wonderful Derby day, the already charged atmosphere went through the roof. One of us. Always.

It will do sales up here no end of good if you can arrange for Brentford to be thrashed on August 5th. Can we get the great man on the pitch at half-time to plug the book - and tell us who he's supporting?;)

Bob and I are coming up for the Brentford game - I know who I will be supporting - but I can't speak for him! Hopefully we will have finished copies of the book by then but I doubt if they will be in the shop. Hopefully he can give it a plug then. There might possibly be a signing the Barnsley match but this has yet to be confirmed and might not happen.

He was a joke at first. He epitomised the decline of our football club. He was the kind of player we'd howl at laughter at because he was so poor. It just summed up how low we'd sunk after being blessed with some great footballers whose boots he wasn't fit to lace.

But, cometh the hour, cometh the man. And Booker won us all over with his sheer intent to do his best for us. Whatever he lacked in talent he more than made up for with effort. We like that. We still do!

He became a crowd favourite because he gave everything he had. And in this city of makers and make-do-ers, he was loved!

And still is.

Change of cover. Bob prefers this. Hope you all like it!

Met Bob once at a do at the Firth Park Working men's Club. They always say don't meet your heroes but its a night I'll never, ever forget, and he didn't disappoint! He started the night with getting up to the front and with a pint of Stones in his hand says "this is a fucking pint"! He truly was one of the nicest people you could wish to meet, and the fact he turned up at the Firth Park working men's club says it all! I'll definitely be buying the book! As I left on the night when Bob was there, I was talking to my mate and looked over at Bob, who was still in the corner signing autographs. Bob then raises his pint glass in my direction as I was about to leave (I've never met him before like) and I look round thinking there must be someone behind me, but no, there wasn't! I don't know for definite it was for me, but I'll take that it was and just those little memories are priceless. Bob is a natural with the fans and he'll always be my favourite Blade.

My favourite Booker story is probably one of the most well known, but worth repeating. Against Leicester, he's been kicking Gary McAllister all over the place! The 8,000 or so strong army of Blades starts giving it the "OOH AAH BOB BOOKAH" and as Bob and McAllister clash again and McAllister is fuled again by Bob McAllister says "who the fuck are you"? Bob listens to the fans giving it the OOH AAH etc and pauses for a second (as if he doesn't know who he is) points to the Blades fans and says back to McAlister "I'm Bob Booker"! Legend! I hope that's in the book!

This is just to let everybody know that I am currently writing a biography of Bob Booker. This will cover his life and times at all three clubs with which he was associated as a player, coach or assistant manager, Brentford, Brighton and Sheffield United. Bob is very supportive of this project and is assisting me in every way possible.

The book will be published around this time next year by Bennion Kearny who have already published a couple of my books on Brentford (see https://www.amazon.co.uk/Growing-Pai...ville+waterman if you are interested).

I am initially focusing upon his spell at Brentford but will soon be gathering details and interviewing former team mates and colleagues of his from his time at Sheffield United and I am well aware of just how popular he remains to this day. I have already spoken to Derek French and any other suggestions gratefully received.

I would be very interested and grateful to hear from any Sheffield United fans who would like to share their thoughts and reminiscences on Bob and what he has contributed to your club. I would really like to understand how and why you took him to your hearts and why he has remained so popular to this day.

Please leave your messages here or I can be contacted at [email protected]

Many thanks.

Was booed by blades fans in some of his early appearances. Didn't look as good as Webster, but turned it around in spectacular fashion.

I've heard him talk about someone at the club advising him on what the fans expected from him. Really good story.

I'll definitely be buying the book. I was fortunate to meet him a couple of times!!. He was and always will be a true blades legend!!.
