I don't expect us to go up through the playoffs, but to be honest, I don't think we're good enough to finish better than mid table in the Championship at best.

In some respects I think another season in Division 1 could be to our benefit. Surely it's time to start introducing some of the 'development squad' into the first team . Rather than sending them out on loan, they could play for their own club and hopefully gel into a great side who can eclipse the achievements of Charlton this year, before becoming a real force in the Championship.

I've enjoyed watching us doing well and playing good football in this league and I'll be there next season, whatever league we're in. However it's obvious we need a clear out of the likes of Simmonson, Porter, Ertl, Monty, Beattie etc to name but a few, a complete restructuring and rebuilding of the squad and I don't think the Championship is the best place to do it.

You mean you're not gutted that we wont be going the The Walker bowl again? I'm gutted at the thought of going to Notts County, when it could be Barnsley or Blackpool.

Serioulsy, I've enjoyed this year too, I'd rather us go up, but I won't be shedding tears over it.

Agreed. While watching the socalled beamback today all i could think was how it will be easier for me next season if we are almost guaranteed plenty of easy wins, goals and excitement, instead of the defeats and probable relegation awaiting us up a level.
Clear out the overpaid crap and get a decent scouting system, scour the lower leagues for decent players and build a team.
But of course, i want promotion..it will be tough up there , as our squad is very weak at that level.

We can't afford to spend another season in League One - but we will. As someone's pointing out in another thread, we've got a lot of players leaving this summer, and although you could say this is a chance to bring in some replacements, i'm concerned about how much McCabe would be funding for these. We could be in this division for some time.

Considering 7 or 8 players have started most games this season, of those, we could easily be without Simmo, Lowton, Harry, Squinny, Willo and KMac next season, not to mention a certain striker. If we don't go up, it'll be a complete overhaul in the Summer.

The way I see it is: Get promoted thru the PO's and the club / fans will pretend nothing happened i.e players will sign contract extensions and nothing will have changed from last year. Still the same bunch of unless players and another year of a relegation battle, with the end result of us going back down.

or

Lose in the PO's, get rid of all the useless over paid players and start afresh with youth together with some experience players who want to play for united, who want to play in the Championship, who want to better themselves.

Staying in league 1 won't be that bad. DW knows how poor this league is and so can sign (fingers crossed but his record in signing good players ain't that great) the right players need for promotion

here comes the brains of the outfit.

im with sitters in the other thread.... GET. BEHIND. THE. TEAM. ITS. NOT. OVER. YET.

OR, get promoted and DONT offer the useless over paid players another contratct.

Or don't win the play offs, lose all the high earners, sell any young player we have who is any good, replace it with more mediocre crap and possibly drop down another division.

Who,above this level,would buy :-

Lowton-right back who cant defend
Maguire-Inexperienced,gets bullied too easily and lacks pace and positional sense

Plenty of clubs in the Championship would take 2 youngsters who've more than held their own in a team that's been chasing promotion all year.

Wilson's record of signing players is appalling - worrying times ahead.

They may be playing at that level next season - not necessarily in a red and white shirt ;)

Exactly. Nobody then..yippee. means with a bit of luck these two will be able to let us down week in week out in the championship..just like last year.
Fact is the squad is cack.

The squad is 'cack' for championship level and too thin for this level.

We some how need to keep McD & Willo, get an experienced centre half and find the money to buy a pacy striker(e.g. Hoskins,Bevon ). Hopefully some of the kids will prove themselves

The squad isn't cack (relatively) othewise we wouldn't be where we are. We're missing a lead striker, and the rest are highly overpaid. But that gives us plenty of opportunites aswell as a few problems.

I can't see Maguire wanting to leave, he strikes me as being quite level headed and appreciative of his position at Bramall Lane. Maybe Lowton, but I'm not sure he'd get a better offer than he's on now anywhere else.

I think that the club have quite wisely been buying for the future, the reserves won their league, the Academy is well respected, just a shame the first team are shit!

Well at least short of a couple of strikers anyway, oh and a goalie...

I just think of us in the Championship with our current squad and can't help remembering the FA Cup match with Birmingham. I know they made the play offs, but they strolled about and won 4-0 without breaking sweat.

The last time Danny Wilson took a club to the play offs: they lost in the final, their top scorer left, they started the following season OK then went on a disastrous run which ended with Danny getting sacked and Swindon getting relegated.

Been saying it for awhile. could be a blessing in disguise.
Even if we went up, McCabe has said the wage bill would need to be trimmed.
Its time the Development squad & the Youth Team were given more of a chance.

Birmingham match aside, you can see by the clubs that get promoted from the third that the gap isn't that wide. A few additions would see us easily holding our own - more likey than actually getting there.

if simmonsen and quinn fuck off then i'll consider the season a success.. totally overrated.

Wilson's record of signing players is appalling - worrying times ahead.

Appalling is a bit harsh. He has made some signings that haven't worked out (Hill, Williams), but KMac has been the best midfielder we have had for a long time and Flynn hasn't been all that bad. LJF has done ok. The Beattie signing gave the fans a boost, but it didn't work out on the pitch and Hoskins was injured (lets forget O'Halloran). Look at the impact Matty Phillips and Billy Clarke made - Mendez-Laing was a bit hit and miss though. So his signings have been mixed rather than appalling, but show me a manager who gets everything right all of the time. Also he did get rid go Boggy!

For next season I hope Willo will stay and KMac (the former has stated he would like to sign a new contract - the latter will be harder to keep hold of). Harry will give us another season (he has stated he would rather play first team football - he has seen what has happened to Slew). I also hope we can show to door to Quinn, Monty and Simmo. The first two have been good servants to the club, but they need to move on now and Long should be playing regularly from next season.

There are one or two players in the reserves who should start to make a bigger impact next year - Kennedy, Whitehouse, Tonne, Philly and Macallister to name a few - but we do still need some more quality, pace and depth - LB, RB, CB, Winger and Strikers ( I will think Cressy and Porter will stay). These new signings will be on cheap deals with lower wages - but savings will be made from Monty, Quinn, Simmo, Lowton and Ched's salaries as all will have been on Championship wages, at least.

You mention Phillips and Clarke as good signings, well they did do well, but didn't their month here coincide with a shocking (relatively) run of results? It seemed that they did well for themselves and us as an attacking force but the balance of the side seemed to be upset whilst they were here.
