Birmingham match aside, you can see by the clubs that get promoted from the third that the gap isn't that wide. A few additions would see us easily holding our own - more likey than actually getting there.

UTB

I think it's a good idea to learn from teams that have been in our position and gone on to do well in the next tier as well. But even if we do go up we can't assume that we'll follow in the footsteps of Southampton and Norwich.

Both of those had major clear outs from the squads that were relegated. I compared two Norwich sides, one in April 2009 (when they were relegated from the Championship) and one in April 2010 (their L1 promotion season) and found that only two players remained. Southampton needed one more season in league one to rebuild but it seems that was right for them as it allowed them to gain a momentum that saw them win another promotion as well.

Charlton and Sheffield wednesday both tried to bounce back without a major clear out (similar to our approach). Both of them had disappointing first seasons in League One, and Charlton chose to have a complete clear out last summer - to good effect. Megson made some signings in January 2011 and some of them came good this season. They managed to further freshen up their squad in the next two windows (signings and loans) and subsequently won auto promotion.

I'd like it to be known that the approaches that have led to the above mentioned teams' success is different to what we've tried to do this season. We have pushed the boat out as much as them in terms of money spent, but we have spent it on players already at the club. The question is if these players have it in them to keep improving, if we as a club and squad have enough momentum and potential to take on the Championship as well.

Who,above this level,would buy :-

Lowton-right back who cant defend
Maguire-Inexperienced,gets bullied too easily and lacks pace and positional sense

Agreed. We have (had) 2 quality players - Ched & McD. I think the likes of Lowton and Maguire need to concentrate on improving with us. I'd be amazed if either went to one of the bigger / better Championship clubs.

Fact is the squad is cack.

The squad that got 90 points is cack , a points total that would have got automatic in 132 out of 134 seasons

weird logic
we must be cursed we dont get promoted with 90 points and have got relegated twice on goal difference from the prem
we sure aint a lucky team

That depends on how much we're offered for them. It's the crappy thing about being crap.
The point I was trying to make is I don't think any of the bigger / better clubs would want them. Both need to improve to live up to their early promise IMHO

Fair enough. Agree on Maguire but worry Lowton will attract bids. His attacking talent is undoubted, while his defensive play can be coached.

Disagree with you, think they both would be very attractive for Championship clubs, though they could be put off by our asking price. But if we go up they'll surely stay.

Well, yes, we're in the Third Divison you see.

If we keep hold of Lowton then we should be looking to bring in a specialist right back and move Lowton into midfield, pretty sure that's he's only been playing right back because we've had no one else.

agree totally mate.. lowton is a box to box midfielder with an amazing eye for a goal.. totally wasted at right back..
we need two full backs.. a keeper and a rapid striker and get rid of the deadwood whether we go up or not
ps nice research bergen :D
