Best Healthy and Safety rubbish I've heardwas at the kids' primary school, a couple of years ago. One of the tiny children had fallen over and badly grazed his leg in the playground. School had to call his parents in to administer calpol and bandage his knee, because absence of a first aider and the School's H&S protocols meant that they were not allowed to give medical help to a distressed and injured child.

F.F.S !

The snow was forecast but not in the amounts that fell. Keeley was on Look North saying there would be a little snow but it wouldn't be settling, and on that basis I took me mum home from Woodseats to Chesterfield. Finally made it back 3 hours later!

Pubs don't usually expect 20,000 customers at a time nor do the regulars need to climb a couple of flights of steep steps to get to the front door so those comparisons aren't realistic. One postponed game hardly amounts to a fixture pile-up and I'd guess the main reason ours is the only game said to be in danger is that we had more snow than anywhere else and Chesterfield and Wednesday are both playing away.

Conspiracy theories in Scunthorpe are probably based on the weather in North Lincolnshire being very different to what we have had, but I agree with fans who are happy enough to not have the match on anyway since on current form Scunthorpe would be likely to win. I'd rather sit in front of my fire any day than watch Paddy Madden stroll through our defence and land us with another 0-1 defeat. That would leave us 8th or 9th or summat and without a game in hand. Bugger that.

I'm so glad we rested all those players on Friday in preparation for this one.

Not fussed either way if the game was on or off but I do get the impression United weren't overly keen to get it on whatever the reasoning behind it. With the under soil heating I'd guess the pitch would only need clearing of snow to make it playable, but then they're asking any would be volunteers not to turn up (H&S or not, there's ways round it, just get um to sign a piece paper saying they'll not hold the club responsible for any mishap). Why have they had the pitch inspection at 10am, with Scunny only being down the road why not 12 and give if it another 2 hours of sun. As for surrounding areas, should this really have a bearing, if fans don't fancy it, get public transport or don't go (if fans have bought tickets already the club could offer refunds in the circs).

If that lad from Belgium (you're not a former Brookie from Wheatley Grove btw??) can manage to get his family over for the game surely it shouldn't be that difficult for the club to get the game on.

I can't see what all the fuss is about the game was never going to be on. I have just been out to drop the missus at Meadowhell and the roads are horrendous ice everywhere and in places fallen snow still on the main roads that is if you are lucky enough to be able to get off your estate to a main road. I can well believe people who still have not yet got their car home, cars are parked up all over the place. I have seen one grit wagon in two days now so the council are definitely not putting money and resources into keeping the roads clear. It might be easy to move about in Scunthorpe (not a hill in sight) but it is a bit different in Sheffield where every other road is a steep hill so fuck the Scunny fans moaning on their forums we got enough with our own fans using the conditions as a stick to beat the club with.

No mate, that's not me. I agree with the sentiment though. We had a long drive over here and we are booked into a hotel for two nights; I can't see why the game is postponed, everything else in the city seems to be working. Lots of people will have made plans to travel to watch the game, you can't help but feel that the club couldn't care less.

Good job the game's off. With the money saved from not having people suing the club after falling over and bruising a knee because it might be a bit slippy, we might be able to afford a striker who can score 20 goals a season

IMO the club had no intentions of getting this game on. They have made a token effort and were already making excuses yesterday. Interesting that no photos of the pitch in its current state have not been posted and also they very quickly shunned any offers of help from the fans.

If the club really wanted to play this game, more effort would have been made e.g Fulham last season.

But its great that the club is thinking of the fans' safety!!! My arse!

It's not been called off because of the pitch.

There's probably a picture somewhere of Clough and Morgan shovelling ice onto the pitch. Just in case.

As for the roads being treacherous. I'm guessing this won't work as an excuse when I have to get into work for 7 tomorrow.

Foxy, I'm sure it hasnt been called off cos of the pitch, that would be just too embarrasing, but the fact remains that if the club wanted the game on, the surrounding streets etc could have been cleared. They dont and they werent.

Garbage - the ref said it was playable so what's that got to do with "embarrassing" and what have the club got to do with "the surrounding streets etc."? You really do have a problem with SUFC.

How far do they go and which routes in and out were causing particular concern to the authorities?

I know I'd have been walking instead of driving and I haven't got the car all the way home from boxing day yet.

The fault is solely at the hands of Sheffield City Council and their subbies Amey for this one. They are the ones who failed to be pro-active in gritting the city despite having prior notice of the snow. Yesterday the club told us that none of the roads around the ground had been treated and with temperatures hitting zero last night this allowed some of the snow to melt and black ice to form everywhere. The club have a responsibility to protect the fans therefore have made the right call to postpone the match. I genuinely feel the club has been let down equally as much as we have, I didn't really want another midweek game but I equally don't want to come on here tonight and hear of the blades fan seriously hurt or worse due to the slipping on ice outside BDTBL today.

It's madness here out in North Notts with the Bawtry to Gainsborough "main road" closed due to 2 major accidents. Mrs W has just been out in our 4x4 and says it was treacherous even in that. Nowt for it but to walk to the pub this afternoon!

Whoa...read the post properly..."I'm sure it hasnt been called off cos of the pitch" If it had the club would have all kinds of difficult questions to answer.

The club did not want this game on, last season they Wanted the Fulham game on and they put 100% effort into doing so. There are people who have travelled a long way and made huge plans to attend to todays game and ANYTHING less that 100% effort to fulfil the fixture is unacceptable.

I accept that they do not control surrounding streets, but the snow arrived 2 days ago, to me that is long enough to take at least some steps. What steps were in fact taken?

Really annoyed, I can't get to evening games unless it's a Friday due to work so this is another game waisted off my season tickets, why didn't they ask for Voulnteers to clear the Kop and surrounding streets on Saturday? They have done this before, Hudderfsfield and Forest have done it.

I think they feared defeat in this one and took the opportunity to try and get the gsme delayed hoping for better form and the injuries and suspensions cleard when the rearranged game is on.

The club didn't want a game today, you could tell that yesterday, like a few have said, you'd think they'd be raring to go and try to end this poor run with a good win at home...

The club had to clear the steps, pitch, and car park, I don't see how the roads and surrounding areas are anything to do with united, the council are clearly more liable for those areas, and they don't give a shit, i'd love to know how you'd go on trying to sue your boss if you crashed the car on the way to work..

Bigger clubs will play today, and smaller ones too, we won't, because we don't want to...

Yeah, but when you're cross-eyed things look different! :D

If you buy a ticket for the original fixture but can't make the rescheduled match, do the club have to reimburse you? I would assume they do, but would that mean they have to reprint all the tickets?

The only game in the country called off. Embarrassing. The pictures on Sky and elsewhere suggest we made absolutely no effort at all. To not even clear the pitch or the main car park is shocking. We have left ourselves wide open to criticism once again.

Had the club made every effort but the game was still called off then fine - but it doesn't look that way.

Does this mean we are going to splash the cash in the January transfer window and didn't want to play before then?! Perhaps not....

If the pitch was playable there's no reason that the match could not have gone ahead. It wouldn't have been hard for the club to clear the the kop steps, pitch, and car park. They also had time to salt / grit the pavements immediately surrounding the ground. Driving conditions aren't the best, but they could have advised fans planning to travel by car to use public transport or one of the city cente car parks.

As far as I know, Meadowhall hasn't been closed due to concerns for the safety of shoppers. It attracts about the same amount of people, if not more, on a weekend.

Ten years ago this would have gone ahead. Now, it seems, it's pointles clearing the pitch as games will be cancelled anyway if there's ice or snow on the roads near the stadium.

I don't know who makes the decision on how much clearing effort should be made, but suspect such thoughts could have been at the back of the club management's mind. We are on a horrendous run at the moment and can't buy a league win. Things may become different in January, with a couple of new players involved. As it stands I don't think anyone was confident of three points today. It wasn't the best time to play Scunthorpe.
